Psych Fest Day Three: Photos and Thoughts

It is Psych Fest Day Three. I have empty memory cards and I am well-rested. My brain is no longer trying to swell out of its cage.

What’s to do? Well, there is a little band I call Thee Oh Sees. Again, not a true fit for Psych, but who cares? They are going to put down jams. I was also excited to see the return of Dead Confederate. Can they catch the magic of their first release?

I took a lot of pics Sunday.

Festival notes: No Nathan today so I had to fist pump solo. The Pork sammich from the Tenderland trailer is truly epic, so check out them out in their regular spot off Manor a few blocks east of 35. I’m going to focus on the main stage.

The UFO Club features members of Night Beats and the Black Angels. Not a shock, they may have been the best blend of garage, southern rock and 70’s Psych of the festival. There were pre-song meetings to cover progressions, so they obviously were having fun with this. Dead Confederate started with five straight new songs. They were solid. Very solid. Looking forward to hearing the fully realized recordings. Thee Oh Sees just tore it up. Plexiglass guitar, the drummers staring each other down in a challenge of metronomic proportion, vocal punctuation, energy expenditure – I will see these guys anytime they come to town. Meat Puppets busted out the classic jams, bass-player Cris Kirkwood shared smiling grimmaces.

Brian Jonestown Massacre treated the set like a reunion party. Anton started things off with a cigarette and gave the festival, specifically the Black Angels, a pat on the back for putting together a collection of bands that drew fans from all over. Paraphrase, but be passionate and people will notice. He also shared a story about his first show at Emo’s, the original Emo’s, impromptu acoustic set. Anton has a soft spot for this place, even the new place. Reports around the internets put the setlist at 23 songs.
