Show Pics: Tycho & The Album Leaf @ Red7 (9/7)

Friday was a busy night. On my agenda, Pujol, Ariel Pink, Tycho and The Album Leaf.

Tycho asked The Album Leaf join them (him) on tour. This is a seriously good bill for any fan of mid-to-down tempo, beautifully crafted songs. To get to see both on the same night was a treat. It was impressive that the show sold out despite being in the larger space outdoors at Red7. Quick polling told me that the crowd was actually half and half as to who they were there to see, maybe Tycho in the lead. I guarantee that both bands gained fans.

Click through for a few thoughts and plenty of pics. Projectors are fun.

The Album Leaf have a bit more stage presence with extra lights and the projector highlighting the band with visuals to distract and entertain. They have an extensive library, and they used it. Jumping from brand new (prompting the visit the merch table speech) to early tracks, the crowd up front was enthralled. Unfortunately, show talker filled the back rows and as I wandered taking shots, my ears exposed the venue’s weakness, the consistency in the sound mix. Sounded best up front for sure.

Tycho also used the projector for lighting, displaying visuals developed in Scott Hansen’s other life as a graphic designer. Tycho has some of the best looking merch. Beautiful design, fantastic variety, I hope he made a killing and I did see plenty of shirts and LPs under fans’ arms on the way out. Splitting time between being backed by his band and running things solo, Scott is constantly in motion between three sets of keys and samplers, the MacBook running visuals. We did learn that 90F+ at night is not good for laptop.
