Show Pics: Two Door Cinema Club @ Stubb’s (4/10)
Guilty pleasures, we all have them (Timberlake, comics, shimmying, wrestling, jello shots). I have a thing for Brit-Pop and the poppiest stuff going in my playlists has to be Two Door Cinema Club. I swore them off after the last show based on their destined rise with a rabid fan base of teenage “drop me off at the show, mom” crowd. More on them in a bit.
Inevitably, openers will get also get more mainstream as the crowd changes. Robert DeLong is an interesting creature.
But, even if you hate the bands involved, I hope you will take a look at the photos. I shot the second night and the photo pit to myself. It was well lit and a ton of fun to shoot.
First about the crowd, I will take this screaming mass of jumping crazies anytime, because the overhead cell phone to audience member ratio for the hits was much lower than at Grizzly Bear. No kidding. They also sang and danced and generally loved being in the moment. Congrats.
Robert DeLong is the inevitable contribution to the music scene from the video game generation. Among his “instruments” are a joystick and an XBox controller. The younger half of the crowd danced, the older portion, many fans of Two Door’s ACL appearances. Fun to shoot for a solo act.
Two Door Cinema Club is so dialed in the live setting right now, it is kind of ridiculous. First of all, their sound guy had Stubb’s sounding amazing. It was tight, clear and perfectly mixed. Next, the lighting was simple yet well orchestrated. Lines of variable lights were crossed, swept and strobed to add impact to the well-staged performance. Finally, the performance was high energy without excess. These guys are having fun playing together. Ben Thompson, the touring drummer, might as well be a member of the band at this point, IMHO.
So there you go. They came, they ate meat, they sold out two nights at Stubb’s…
