New Jesse Tune from Hard Sky

Seems like there’s some great Austin-related news floating about today, with that early jam from Sleep Good, and now Jesse of Pure X releases another single. Considering he’s a Texan, its no wonder this song is filled with sliding guitar and a smoke-filled vocal. But, what I think makes Jesse’s work important, at least today, is that he’s wrapping a traditional style with his own tapestry. There’s an audible hiss working behind him throughout, with some other little atmospheric flourishes peeping through…much like you’d expect from a Pure X release. Look for his new album Hard Sky to pop up o June 23rd courtesy of Uniform Group.

Gentle New Laucan Tune

Laucan has been on my radar for some time, and we even encouraged folks this year to catch him at SXSW. He’s back with a song from his debut album, and it’s just as stunning as we’ve come to expect. It takes on a traditional folk vibe, working melodic vocals over gently strummed guitar and light percussive notes. For me, the texture of strings in the background elevates the tune, stepping in line with pounding drum hits as the song’s natural tension pushes forward as the song fades to a close. FramesPerSecond will be out on August 21st via Sundays Best…and it might just bring you your favorite new folk musician.

Stream I Did the Best I Could from Office Culture

You look around the Internet these days and the landscape looks very similar; it all feels the same. But, enter Office Culture and their album, I Did the Best I Could; it opens the door to a blend of pop music that’s as refreshing as it is nostalgic. “Molly” is a jam reminiscent of early Jens Lekman, focusing on the vocals, while letting the music fill in the space behind. Other tracks like “Fool” pull in barroom crooner vibes, though they layer backing vocals and guitar stabs to build the pop sensibility. I’m looking around, browsing my musical library, and there’s nothing quite like the listen I lay before you. This is where pop music succeeds. This is where you’ll find your happy place. The LP hits this Friday.

The Triffids Reissues Come Out Friday

I spent the first few days of my break finishing off “Grant and I,” which mentioned the Triffids as one of the other early Aussie acts that influenced the country’s musical landscape. I’d only listened to the band casually, as they weren’t as dear to me as the Go-Betweens, but I’m really excited for the reissue of Treeless Plain and In the Pines this Friday. I love the way the band seems so relaxed in their songs, seemingly foretelling the country’s flare for casual pop. Here’s a little ditty I’ve been enjoying over the last few days to hopefully pique your interest and have you revisiting the band’s catalog along with these reissues.

Sleep Good Is Back with a New Single

It’s been a few years since we last heard new music from Will Patterson’s project, Sleep Good. He’s back now with a brand new album titled Bohemian Grove, and I couldn’t be more excited to hear what he’s bringing. I love the bouncing piano lines that hit in the background, but the swelling wall of sound that spins around the chorus is pretty remarkable. His pedigree includes working with SoundTeam back in the day, but I suggest you also take a listen to Skyclimber just to refresh your ideas on his gifts. Look for the new LP later this year in August.

Another Michael Nau Single

Lots of good songs for your consumption today, but I feel like the soulful new single from Michael Nau is a good way to wrap up my day. It has a modern R&B feel, especially in the way it was recorded, meant to sound old school. I think Nau’s voice adds a nice balance, as he typically has more of a croon…though he stretches himself here, in a good way. Even with the throwback feel, it still manages to have a playful vibe that I’m sure will improve your day as you already look towards the weekend. Look for Some Twist via Suicide Squeeze on June 16th.

Indiepop News from Matinee Recordings

Yes! Today you indipoppers will rejoice in the 20th Anniversary of Matinee Recordings…and with that, they’re also bringing you a brand new compilation…including some new tunes from our favorites like The Electric Pop Group. Plus, the comp also features a gem of a tune from Last Leaves, the new group formed by ex-Lucksmiths Marty Donald. Swinging guitar licks, steady beats and soaring harmonies are sure to abound when the Matinee Idols comp is released into the world on June 23rd. I’d write about the songs, but the label has tossed up a sample (including the two tracks I just mentioned), so stream and adore.

Milk Teddy Return with New Album

If you skipped over Zingers back in the day, then perhaps this new single is the perfect introduction to Milk Teddy, especially as it comes with the announcement of a new LP. I’d filed it under casual pop, though the sort that could only come from an Aussie act. There’s a mixture of guitar sounds from cascading notes to strumming, all crossing over one another as careful synth notes highlightthe song’s natural melodies. This is the sort of song that you spin all day long, so keep a look out forTime Catches Up with Milk Teddy on August 18th via Lost and Lonesome.

New Music from Jack Cooper

Odds are, you’ve probably enjoyed Jack Cooper‘s songwriting in some fashion, either in Mazes or in Ultimate Painting, but he’s now stepping out to take on songwriting on his own. There’s a nostalgic sound here, which should come as no surprise if you’ve been following Ultimate Painting; he even name checks Terry Allen and Frank Sinatra in the press for this new album. Those nods are all well and good, but can he pull it off? On first listen, I think you’re answer is going to be a resounding yes! Honestly, I didn’t expect anything other than a song that sounded this good. Look for Sandgrown on August 25th via Trouble in Mind Records.

One Last B Boys Single Before Dadaism

Dadaism is headed our way next Friday, and before it drops, B Boys have opted to hand out one last single to tease. I love the band’s blend of art punk with slight new wave flare; it brings an added layer to their sound, which illustrates just how quickly they’ve grown into their sound. They then fade the song out in an exciting fashion, rolling noise and vocals into one rolling ball that walks you out the door. I have a feeling these guys will be household names at some point…at least at my house.
