Nathan’s Top Austin Albums of 2018

In the year’s end, those who “write” about music claim our superior tastes by spouting off about our favorite releases. I figured I should start off all the shenanigans with a list from our home base, Austin, Texas. Below you’ll find a list of my favorite releases from the confines of our fair city.

Let it be known that we released albums by Marmalakes, Feverbones and David Israel (and an EP by Blushing), but those will not make this list for the sake of favoritism…though they’d all obvious take the top spot…duh. Read more

Seeing Hands Share New Songs

Seeing Hands just released a brand new EP yesterday. While the EP collects a few of the singles from the band, it also brandishes two stellar new tracks that are worth your time. The first, “Colours,” is this dreamy pop soundscape, hanging fragile vocal lines carefully out there to drift through the speakers of the world; I love the feel of the vocals, as if we’re all in a large group singing together. “Sorry,” the latter tune has this more electronic sheen; you can feel the rhythmic pulse at the get-go, though it still softens the edges to maximize pop sensibility. The new EP is available on 10″ via Discos de Kirlian.

New Number from Delsbo Beach Club

Having already reached our radar with previous singles, its only fitting that Delsbo Beach Club make it back on the site before the year is up. The Swedish outfit seems like they’d just come in real quick, hit you over the head with insatiable licks, then lurk off back to their home. But, as this tune can attest, they’re willing to hang about, playing with traditional formats to really let the listener have something to sink their teeth into whilst jamming out. I love the emphatic close to this, completed contrasted with the song’s slinkily playful opening. This tune will appear on the group’s new EP, dropping via Rama Lama Records in 2019!

Spooky Cigarette Share Another New Single

Not too long ago we shared the latest hit from Spooky Cigarette, and they’re already back at it again with another number for you to swoon over. This one has a bit of a lounge croon for the vocals, coming off like the Dears, though with the gang vocals jumping in, there’s a more emphatic punch to the track. I love how this group just works with simple hooks, develops them into complete tracks that remain in your brain throughout the day. Feel free to stomp your feet, clap your hands and get carried away by the latest from Sand Diego outfit.

Wayward Pop from Dialup Ghost

I won’t pretend that I knew of Dialup Ghost before their latest single crossed my computer screen. I’m working to remedy that, and perhaps you will too after listening to this wonderful ditty. There’s a fuzzy layer atop the entire risk, but it can’t disguise the natural hook in the vocals. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but there’s a familiarity to that voice, something that seems oddly reminiscent of early Omaha. They just recently released I’m Fine, I’m Fine, so if this sounds remotely like something you’d enjoy, then go ahead and press play…thank me later.

Another Indiepop Gem from El Palacio de Linares

I spent the entirety of this holiday break hanging with old friends and kicking it with my baby daughter; I want those vibes to continue before I have to think about the rest of the world. The best way for me to escape is with some light-hearted indiepop to start off the work-week, so I’m bringing you another gem from El Palacio de Linares. For me, though I speak Spanish, it’s great to have this emotional attachment to the light jangling guitar work first, before working back to translate the lyrics; I think you’ll catch the same sentiment just by spending a quick couple of minutes with this tune. If you love it, keep an eye out, as the band will drop their new LP, Largos Agotadores, via Pretty Olivia Records in early 2019.

Fun Pop Number from Pizzagirl

Pizzagirl is on a roll, pretty much guaranteeing that the Season 2 EP will be nothing short of a joyous listening affair. Liam Brown, the man behind the project, definitely knows his way around crafty hooks, and those are surely at play here, especially with that huge thudding beat and jangling sounds dancing throughout. It’s carefree pop music, the sort that supersedes all genres and all people, hitting home at the heart of every music listener. Throw your hands up in the air, kick those feet up and let yourself go free. The EP will be available for folks willing to let themselves go this Friday.

Dig On Le Superhomard

I think I’ve fallen down a twee wormhole; I can’t stop spinning charming pop tune after tune. French outfit Le Superhomard are definitely where it’s at today, especially now that the band’s latest EP has dropped into the world. I can hear where Stereolab comparisons might come into play, with Julie Big’s huge voice working over these delicate electronic sounds; I do think that also minimizes the band’s songwriting prowess by casting them as copycats. Instead, listen to the subtle guitar strumming beneath the mix, washed over by space-aged keyboard notes and Big’s warmth. The Springtime EP just came out last week via Elefant Records, and it belongs with you wherever you collect your music.

Gary Olson of Ladybug Transistor Drops Single

We’ve told you to keep an eye on Kleine Untergrund Schallplatten, as the German label has been releasing some incredible work this past year…and they’re knocking it out of the park with this new 7″ from Gary Olson of Ladybug Transistor. It’s a pretty soft ballad, with just a hint of bouncing rhythm to grab your ear. That being said, the production behind Gary is what completes the song’s magic; there’s light string arrangements accompanying the angular ring of the guitar…eventually opening up to the wondrous bursting horns that really bring the song home. Gary blends folk and pop seamlessly, and all those who listen are sure to be delighted.

New Austin Releases: Pleasure Venom + Housewarming

As we’re wrapping up the year, there’s still a few delights coming from Austin that should garner your attention. Two great pieces of music were dropped last week via Pleasure Venom and Housewarming.

Pleasure Venom continues their barrage of EPs with another excellent connection of punky rockers. Audrey Campbell is the frontwoman you’ve all been looking for, witty and powerful, stealing your soul through your speakers; it’s a good thing, I promise.

Housewarming offer up the softer side of town sharing a single from their forthcoming Sasha EP. It’s light guitar pop, for folks into other local acts like Daphne Tune or Hovvdy. The two singles they’ve shared thus far indicate a confidence in their sound that immediately puts the rest of our city on notice for great things to come.
