Weekend Show Picks: Sunflower Bean, Olden Yolk, RF Shannon, Harlem
This weekend is filled with a ridiculous amount of good shows to catch and seems to be slated to remind you why it is you choose to live in The Live Music Capitol of The World. With an extra day to your weekend, there’s really no excuse not to get out and see some quality local and touring acts. Here are my picks for the next three nights for a killer time out for the holiday weekend.
Friday – 5/24: Sunflower Bean, Annabelle Chairlegs & Why Bonnie @ Barracuda
There’s a little thing called Hot Luck Festival going down at many of the venues in Austin and it combines everything a true Austinite should love–tunes, food and booze. The fest officially kicked off last night, but tonight the party will definitely be at Barracuda for these two great indie rock acts. First up you’ll get two staples of our local scene with the rock of Annabelle Chairlegs and Why Bonnie, followed up by the high octane energy of Sunflower Bean’s power pop/indie rock. Tickets are mad cheap for this sick lineup — get them here and get them now.
Saturday – 5/25: Olden Yolk, RF Shannon, & The Zoltars @ Mohawk Inside
After you get your face melted off by the rock on Friday night at Barry’s, you may be looking for a bit of a mellower vibe for your Saturday night–after all, it is only the middle of the weekend, and pacing is important. Saturday night at Mohawk inside, you’ll get this vibe in the form of some hazy rock. Locals The Zoltars will kick things off with their garage tunes which is the perfect mix of rock and psych. Then you get the ultra desert rock of RF Shannon, who just dropped a new single earlier this week. Last, but by no means least, you get the lovely genre-defying folksy rock of Olden Yolk. They recently released their killer self-titled album back in 2018, and we’ll surely be treated to their Go-Betweens meets Real Estate tunes. What’s so great about Olden Yolk is that they’ve combine so many genres into a single album, bouncing all over the rock landscape; I’m stoked to see how this translates to the live setting. Tickets for this one are 10 dollars–what are you waiting for?!
Bonus Sunday Pick 5/26: Harlem, Flesh Lights & The Stacks @ Barracuda
If you’re still going come Sunday night (which why wouldn’t you be?) the place to be is Barracuda for another night of food and tunes with Harlem and company at Barracuda. Take advantage of the long weekend and keep the party going.
