Tough Age Share Paradise by Another Name

Described by the label as a twee punk ripper, I couldn’t stay away from this fresh new Tough Age track; it’s the last single before they drop their brand new LP next week. Bonus points go to the band’s label Bobo Integral for the spot on description here, which, of course, I absolutely love to death. Tossing in these quick jangling guitars, listeners will struggle to keep their toes from tapping all the way through this track, matching the snappy drum work step by step. And, you’re absolutely going to get blown away by the sweetness of the vocals, dropping in hook after hook with the perfect rise and fall. Lifeguard Share Alarm Single

We should all get used to hearing the name Lifeguard, or at least that’s what I’m hoping for the young band; they’ll be releasing their debut for Matador Records, compiling a 2022 EP with another EP of fresh tunes…one of which you’ll get below. It’s really hard to decide what the draw is, and by that, I mean there’s just so much to love. There’s this driving rhythm, propelled by phenomenal drum work and this sublimely steady bass groove, leaving plenty of open space though for the guitars. And those guitars, they twist and they turn, operating in the most succinct non-linear fashion, all the while offering up discordant noise and sharp, angular notes that ring in the air. None of that even comes close to the personal connection I have with the vocal delivery, particularly as there’s a whispering bit on this tune offering just a glimmer of melody. They’ll be releasing Crowd Can Talk/Dressed in Trenches on July 7th, with a huge tour in the latter Summer months. Rubber Blanket Share Rainbow Bridge; Prep Our Fault

If someone were to tell you that Rubber Blanket was made up of members of the Intelligence and Wounded Lion, would you be interested? What if I were to tell you the band create a sound that falls somewhere in the area between Liars and Blank Dogs? Well, the group have just announced the release of their new album, dropping this demented bit of synthetic pop music that feels like it was constructed by AI…in the best way of course. A buzzing pulse warbles its way into your ears as the haunt of the vocals offer up a reminder of the various colors in the rainbow. Perhaps its not your everyday listen, but that makes us all the better for it. They’ll release Our Fault on June 29th via Mt. St. Mtn.

Jordan Moser Announces Peril LP

If you find yourself looking for that perfect track to whistle through your window as you sit out on your front porch watching the day fade, well, this new Jordan Moser tune’s precisely the one for you. Jordan’s teamed up with one of my favorite voices about town in Natalie Jane Hill, and their duet is set to the rolling drums that move in and out between strums. Musically, the guitars stretch beyond the horizon, just as one might expect your gaze to go as you listen; this is aided by the beautiful string work from Lindsey Verill, building in some huge depth that lets you just sink into yourself. Peril, Jordan’s new LP, will be out on July 28th via Keeled Scales.

Stream Kukulkan, the New LP from Uay

I will always do my best to rep the Mexican band’s that get sent my way, and it’s an easy thing to do when you listen to Uay and their new album, Kukulkan. The simplest way to label the record would be to submerge the sound in the revival of psychedelia, and sure, those elements exist, but in the corners of the songs, that’s where they manage to really captivate and move beyond. For instance, you can almost feel the psychedelic turn to cumbia if you take on a song like “Inexplicable,” which seems to meld into something similar to the “chicha” sounds. You still get those classic numbers of fiery guitar sounds and mind-melting vibes on a track like “La Llorona,” though I’ve grown partial to album closer “Recado.” This tune sort of takes on a space trance, that eventually makes way for a sort of slow burning fire dance that wraps up Kukulkan. If you dig, and you should because its better than King Gizzard, grab the LP from Half Shell Records.

The Wild Kindness Share Pay That Price Single

Wanted to be sure we were covering lots of good Austin stuff, especially now that the Wild Kindness have moved to the comfy confines of our fair city after years of running amok in the Bay Area. It seems like a fitting move, as their sound certainly caters to a very Texas state of mind, particularly as the summer sinks into our skins. There’s something in Mike Alexis’ songwriting that reminds me of Clem Snide, though pushing even a little deeper into Americana; it’s got great accompaniment and arrangements to make the song swell, while still operating with clever wordplay. So, we welcome the group to Austin, and wish you’d check out their newest single.

Cast of Thousands Share Mari Single

If you were a big fan of Austin band Flesh Lights (we put out a tape with the band!), then you’re going to want to hear Max’s new project, Cast of Thousands. A new single just popped up with this anthemic power-pop ripper, which totally makes sense when you listen back through some of the riff work in the Flesh Lights; there’s that same sharpness to the guitars, albeit curved a wee bit to let the melody soar a bit out there. The band is in the early stages, but there are already some incredible musicians on the LP like members of Little Mazarn, Mean Jolene and Roky Moon!

Th Da Freak Shares Serie A

If you travel back in time, you might be able to get the secret Th Da Freak album that was briefly available on Bandcamp. But, it was pulled and then reshuffled and redone, thus where we are today with a fresh single and video from the French songwriter. I’ve always appreciated the songwriting, and there’s something here that’s really refreshing. In a sense, the video and song both have this sort of intimacy that recalls bedroom pop, but there’s this driving hook that courses through the track, elevating the song just enough to have this hook-laden pop rocker. If you dig it, you better grab Indie Rock from Flippin Freaks before it disappears again; it’s out June 16th!

Spice World Share Video for Time Time Turn Around

I really hope you are not one of those sleeping on Spice World‘s great new LP, There’s No I In Spice World; it’s easily one of my Top 5 Records of this year, and I keep discovering new gems around every corner. One of the album’s briefest tracks, coming in under one minute, just got a really great animated video treatment that I wanted to use to remind you to check out the band’s music. For me, there’s something in the frivolity of this tune that reminds me of some of the earlier stuff from the Clean or perhaps the Vaselines, sharp and playful until the very minute. Echo Ladies Share Latest Single, Awake

We wanted to start off your Tuesday with something that’s a little bit brooding, something a little bit on the darker side of our pop affectations, thus this new single from Malmo’s Echo Ladies. My first hook on this song was the sort of club vibe from the rhythm section; the beat work has this sort of static skip to it, balanced by the dark bob and weave of the base line. Matilda’s vocals are what give us the hope of a brighter tomorrow, riding along the balance between shimmering and dreamy, hitting these tones that are able to walk amongst the song’s shadowier moments. The group will be releasing Lilies on September 8th via Rama Lama Records.
