Another Track from the Lower Plenty LP

If there was an album I just wanted to curl up with on the couch, it definitely would be this new LP from Lower Plenty. There’s such a calmed relaxation to every track we’ve heard, and we’ve been fortunate to get at least four of the tracks from the LP. This new number has this wistful charm, there’s something to the curl of the syllables, wrapping underneath to kind of keep the weight of the world at bay…not too far off from Bill Callahan vocal depths. Some light nuanced backing vocals pop in from time to time to elevate the track, as if that was needed. Another reason you’re going to want to spend the cool Fall night under a blanket listening to No Poets; it drops this Friday via Bedroom Suck Records.

Show Preview: Lewsberg @ Hotel Vegas (10.5)

If you’re one of the three people in Austin reading this site, might I encourage you to join me tomorrow night over at Hotel Vegas? Dutch outfit Lewsberg, who we’ve been covering for a few years, are headed to our town, fresh on the back of their excellent Out and About LP (12XU). I know there are tons of folks in the greater city limits who love “post-punk,” or the like, so this is certainly a show you’ll want to catch; it’s like if you were taking the modern trends and styles and spinning it through the wheels of Calvin Johnson’s DIY joy-machine, with some mixtures of Broadcast/Stereolab thrown in to be cool. Plus, Hotel Vegas got it right, with the band playing at 11, so you can still get home in a reasonable hour, though I suggest sticking around to catch Cast of Thousands, the new band fronted by Max of Flesh Lights. Tickets are HERE. Heard Mark from THEMM will be there too; he always brings boxes of sliders!

Uni Boys Drop I Don’t Believe In Love

I really just want to hang out and listen to Uni Boys all day long. At times, the group can be punchy and garage-y, sort of like an Exploding Hearts adjacent act. But, then the group can turn on the absolute charms and bang out a hook like no one else; its the sort of hook-laden pop rock that lets you and your mom share in the joy of the world. With all their power-pop charms, you know there’s going to be a fiery solo, and it drops around 2:38 if you’re on the hunt. Sometimes we all just want to lay about and have some fun with our rock, which is why I’m fulling back the band’s Buy This Now LP, out on October 13th via Curation Records.

Sugar Tradition Drop Don’t Leave Me

If you thought the tenacity of Motor City music was dead and buried once we gave the torch to Jack White (I think he tried to extinguish it!), then you better stop right where you are and turn on Sugar Tradition. After the slight bit of boogie from their first single “Fragile,” they turn things up a notch here, drawing from the city’s history and aim to tear right into your heart with a howling performance that’s likely to force your soul to leave your body, if only to shake it on stage with the band. While I love the ferocity, what really works here is the thunderous drum work; it feels at times as if things are completely out of control as pounding notes and cymbals crash in your ears. You want your hair blown back? Grab More Sugar from Feel It Records on October 13.

Population II Drops Fresh Video

On Friday, Montreal’s Population II drops their latest LP, Electrons libres du quebec, and I’m really stoked on the vibes, blending in these dark notes and swirling horns vibes then branching it into something that’s a bit of a dark edged pop twist. There’s a bit of heaviness and psychedelic lurking, though I can hear the track stretching to really push beyond those boundaries into something that feels almost like a final plea for joy. Then it twists and rolls into a bit of madness as the track shakes down into a broken jumble of rumbling jazzy rock n’ roll. Their new LP will be available Friday!

Fanclubwallet Releases Small Songs Vol 1

The term bedroom pop gets thrown around (yes, even by me!) far too often nowadays, but Fanclubwallet‘s new Small Songs Vol 1 EP really seems to grasp the concept in its totality, as songwriter Hannah Judge were a one-person project: all Hannah, no filler, with a visualizer for the EP’s single. I love the quite buzz of the keyboard as it shifts in tones; I really love the simplicity, which allows Judge to maximize the hooks once the beat drops into the track. Both beat and vocals seem to work in unison, matched up with one another, like they weren’t meant to sync up. If you’d like to hear more, stream the whole thing HERE.

New Onyon Tune for You

We’ve covered all the Onyon jams from Last Days on Earth, so it seems only fitting that we add another of their singles to our coverage, mostly so I can have it in my weekly playlist. This track seems like the sort of tune that could drive the crowd into a frenzy in the live setting; it’s employing these stabbing guitar rhythms that tear through your speakers. The vocals almost work with a pogo stick, bouncing in your ears while the angular nature sets your feet afire. Frantically, you try to keep pace, only to realize, you’re whole body’s spinning maniacally with joy. Last Days on Earth hits on October 13th via Trouble In Mind.

Model Shop Return with Check the Forecast

In the middle of the week, you’ve got to be sure you press down on those pedals and stomp away with snappy drum licks and bursts of sun, just like Model Shop have done on their brand new single. The Seattle outfit features former members of Math and Physics Club, and today comes news that Check the Forecast will be the follow-up to their debut EP. They’re brandishing a classic indiepop sound here, working back and forth between pleasant melodic work and hard-hitting riffs that have you pounding on your steering wheel as you sing your way to work. Glad to see them group back and rocking in fashion. Their new 7″ will be out via Meritorio Records on November 10th.

Fortunato Durutti Marinetti Shares Clerk of Oblivion

After the incredible success of Memory’s Fool, Fortunato Durutti Marinetti is ready to return with Eight Waves in Search of an Ocean. Today, we’ve got the newest single, a meditation on the state of labor, for both the worker and the labor itself, all of it circling into this monotonous oblivion. While the lyrical content details the cycle of continuous work for the sake of work, it’s supported by this incredible synth setting. At times, there’s this uplifting nature and pure nod to post-disco new wave, but on the other side, it feels open, sort of letting the song run its course, into oblivion. The new LP is out on November 3rd via Quindi Records/Soft Abuse.

Lightheaded Share Love is Overrated Single

New Lightheaded? Another chance to get to know the latest signing to Slumberland Records? Yes, please! I should have known from the first 20 seconds that this track would have me swooning, particularly as the set up is delightful, teasing you along with a thumping bass groove and a ringing bit of synths and guitar. When the vocals come in, they ride on a light backbone of keys. As the song slowly travels, the floor spreads, waiting to explode into this glorious moment of euphoric pop; the climactic moment is more than enough to keep you coming back again and again. This is one special song! Good Good Great is out on October 13th.
