Lame Drivers Share Spring Single

This new Lame Drivers single has been floating around just a few days now, so I wanted to make sure it had time to reach its gestation period before doubling down with an extra bump. There’s almost a progressive psych vibe in the way they lock into that motorik groove, letting the guitar work shimmer all around from behind; I loved the guttural nature of the bass line in this tune rippling as the tune’s undercurrent, pulling you under. They’ve gotten some Big Star nods this go round, but there’s something in the vocals that feels really familiar, and honestly my brain can’t exactly find it, though I’m leaning British in its delivery. Anyways, cool jam for you to run up the flagpole. They drop Become an Island on June 28th.

7ebra Release Normal Song

It hasn’t been too long since 7ebra released their Bird Hour LP, followed by several great sets in America during SXSW in 2023. Today, they return with the A-side to their new Normal Song/Daybreak 7″ for PNK SLM. You enter this track via a synthetic wash working beneath a dangling guitar note; then handclaps sound and that groove gets replaced by a bob-and-weave bass line and Inez’s vocals. But, it’s not just the bass working to give you a rhythmic pulse, as they employ a sampled beat that elevates the song giving it instant pop sensibility that eventually unfurls into this buzz that gives the song this rapturous joy that you won’t be able to escape. New 7″ drops on July 5th.

Cats of Transnistria Share Big Sleep

Our friends at Soliti Music in Finland have been bringing us music from Cats of Transnistria for years now, and I’m grateful, as the band seem to create those listens that are fully immersive, tugging at your brain as they take you on their ethereal journeys. Today, there’s a brand new single, and it’s definitely no different, creating this cavernous depth by utilizing a heavy thumping drum; it felt for a moment like I was being marched off to my doom. That makes sense too, as the band have mentioned that their new work culls from the grooves created by the rhythm section. Still, don’t just get settled into one spot here, as you’ll be ripped from your roots when the 3:15 minute mark hits, crashing against you with thunderous beauty. Looking forward to hearing where they go as we move on!

Miki Berenyi Trio Share Vertigo Video

You might know Miki Berenyi for her appearance on Blushing‘s last album, or maybe you see her name in the liner notes of all the Lush LPs. Right now, however, she’s focused on the Miki Berenyi Trio, who’ve just unleashed this gorgeous new track. There’s this cavernous wave of feedback that seems stuck in the background, sort of pinned against the amps in a sense. Those gaze-y guitars get replaced in the front of the mix by this bouncing rhythmic pulse that gives the track this natural percussive element, providing the movement that accompanies Berenyi’s vocal performance. Not an easy feat to seemingly capture movement without a drummer, but done that they have! If you’re looking, maybe you’ll catch the band on one of their handful of dates hanging out through the start of June! And, if you want something light to read, checkout Miki’s autobiography, Fingers Crossed: How Music Saved Me From Success.

Motorists Share L.O.W. Video

While we thought we knew what to expect from Motorists, the band have been offering us a little something different, as you see here on their latest single. This one’s got some punchy riffs, almost like an early 90s alt rock motif, which keeps the pop sensibility from their earliest work, then ramps it all the way up to eleven. I mean, their specialty is delivering great hooks, and they don’t shy away from that even with a heavier wall of sound coming through my speakers; you can still hear the sugar as the track pitches this way and that. Another sign that we’re going to be in for a super-fun ride when they release Touched by the Stuff on May 24th. (Bobo Integral/We Are Time)

Baula Shares Heaven Knows

Swedish duo Baula have been working pretty hard to get folks into their new release Heavy Heart, No Tears. Personally, I’ve really dug the way they feel like a dark wave version of the Raveonettes; they carry the same cinematic nature in their presentation, while operating as a duo with driving guitar lines could also be apt areas of comparison. In this tune, Karolina’s got some angelic turns of tone throughout this song that take it from dreamy to almost fragile, and those slight turns added in this layer of tension that gets ridden out through the end of the tune. If you’re digging this style, you should definitely give their Heavy Heart, No Tears LP a listen today!

Bibi Club Share Sholsho Video

I’ve been completely obsessed with the new music coming from Montreal’s Bibi Club; it’s clearly rooted in electronics, but there’s something in it that sort of rides above the mundane trappings of working with beats and such. There’s this natural pulse to their work, something that feels animalistic in its essence, yet they manage to kind of take the pain of that existence and lift it into something charming and pleasurable. Something in this new tune hints at the landscape left by the absence of Broadcast, particularly when you hear those snapping snares and distorted guitar lines that get buried low in the mix. Their album Feu de Garde drops this Friday!

Cola Share Albatross Single

I haven’t quite jumped on the Cola train, in terms of coverage for their latest album, but I’m always listening to Tim Darcy’s work. I love the way the new single is mixing both imagery and sound to capture the band’s approach; the black and white images that seem to be fluttering line up perfectly with the delivery of each riff…and even Darcy’s vocals at certain moments. The vocals work in their spoken fashion, and then carry just a bit of curved melody when you arrive at the chorus, just teasing you with bits of pop sensibility. Their new album The Gloss is out June 14th via Fire Talk.

Quivers Return with Apparition + Announce Oyster Cuts

Really excited for our friends in Quivers who release a new single today, courtesy of their new home Merge Records. The last time we heard from the outfit, they were brandishing striking pop rock via their album Golden Doubt, but it seems like they’ve aimed to top themselves this go round, pumping out bigger riffs and even bigger melodies. They employ group harmonies on the vocals, often overlapping, which vaguely reminds me of the New Pornographers at their most joyous moments; it’s an infectious feel that bleeds right through the speakers with a huge stomp that catches you up in its charms. Little bit of swagger and a whole lot of fun; looking for more good stuff from the band as the year continues; they release their new album Oyster Cuts on August 9th!
