Tom Emlyn Drops Double Crossed Video

Swansea’s Tom Emlyn is set to release Rehearsal for the Rain: Scaredycat Vol 2 this August, and when he dropped this new video, I was instantly drawn towards it. There are certain elements that reflect a touch of of baroque pop influences, yet other moments Tom feels like he’s channeling more traditional songwriter fare like a Cohen or Banhart (more recently). When its done by Emlyn, there’s certainly an intimacy built in the careful craft of the bedroom pop brandished, vocals rising in just the right spots to drop the proper melodic hook in on the listener. Keep your eyes and ears peeled if you’re into that crafty brand of pop n’ roll.

Emma Russack Shares About the Girl Title Track

When we first encountered Melbourne’s Emma Russack, she was doing collaboration work with Lachlan Denton (Ocean Party/Pop Filter), but then dropped an excellent collection of soft strummers on Winter Blues. But, as she prepares to release About the Girl, perhaps there’s a little bit more of an electronic underbelly on this tune, perhaps providing Emma with the freedom to craft her own visions entirely unencumbered by bandmates or collaborators. There’s something in the synth work that feels very Broadcast adjacent, though the way the strum is built atop that fuzzy beat allows Russack to stay true to her origin story while pushing herself musically forward. Another reason you should pencil in About the Girl as a record to pick up; it drops via Dinosaur City on August 23rd.

Robber Robber Release Dial Tone

Robber Robber rules. They’re sound is aggressive and yet just melodic enough to offer up a hook that will keep you coming back for more. In the latest musical excursion from the band, they’re pitching the listener back and forth, rocking you with angular cuts then rolling you back with the coy vocal delivery from Nina Cates. While each roll of the dice hints at post-punk undertones, their ability to roll that into a full-on barrage of noise rock makes them incredibly dangerous, musically speaking. Packing both bravado and creativity, you’re not going to be able to turn away from this fresh single; it features on their new Wild Guess LP, out July 26th.

Blood Share TV for a Reason Single

One of the great things about listening to a single by a band you’re familiar with is envisioning their sound filling out your local club; you can hear the live energy coursing through this new single from former ATX band Blood. Walls of noise smash through the speakers, almost immediately meeting up with singer Tim O’Brien’s voice to soften the blow. Tim’s range is really showing through on the group’s latest batch of singles, illustrating how much he’s come into his own; I love the way the tune slows to offer a bit of a whisper near the 1 minute mark. And for all their bombast, they incredibly build at the song’s end, only to hold onto the climactic release you’re likely seeking. Their new LP, Loving You Backwards is slated for a release on August 2nd via Ramp Local.

Capitol Announce Sounds Like a Place

While I’m sure that Ontario’s Capitol likely may not like the unfashionable comparison to the Walkmen, they’re going to get it when folks grab on to their new single…all the way down to the imagery presented in the video of their latest single. Opening with a tricky little bob and weave, it sets the scene for Josh Kemp to enter, offering up these baritone notes that sit happily in the textured indie grooves. I love how there’s a chorus, but then there’s not; they don’t really give you a circular lyrical return, rather they let the voice fall silent in favor of a wall of shattering noise that blows your hair back. This tune features on their new LP, Sounds Like a Place, which is slated to come out in November via Meritorio Records.

Eazyhead Share Feel Alright Video

Was momentarily at risk of going full on indiepop mode today, so wanted to mix up your morning by offering this brilliant bit of psychedelia from Filipino outfit Eazyhead. They’re offering up that sort of Brian Jonestown meets Spiritualized vibe, letting the song sort of billow in a circular nature, almost as if they’re crafting some sort of hazy seance that’s got you under it’s spell. In the latter half you’ve got this dynamic solo that cuts its way through the smog, but in that, there’s also an understated pop sensation that begins to filter through the noise, leaving you with this bright charm to close it out with a nice strum. The band are releasing Personal Echo Chamber via Dedstrange on August 23rd.

Phantom Handshakes Return with Sirens at Golden Hour

New York’s dreamy popsters Phantom Handshakes have been quietly going about the delivery of consistently good pop music over the last four years; they’re finally back with an official new LP, Sirens at Golden Hour, with a stunner to set your expectations. As per usual, they’ve got this wash of atmosphere coating the methodical bounce from the rhythm section; they’re capable of making even the catchiest moments seem like a hazy mirage on the horizon. You’re going to love Federica’s performance too, as she picks up on the energy of the song, bouncing her voice into the mixture from time to time. Sirens at Golden Hour will drop on August 21st, and the feels are trending up for this release.

Chime School Announce the Boy Who Ran the Paisley Hotel

If you’re like me, constantly fawning over those jingle-jangle guitar sounds, you already know the Chime School; they’ve been one of the preeminent bands of the last several years, with a great LP and 7″ already under their belt. Today, we bring you the news that they’ll be releasing The Boy Who Ran the Paisley Hotel this August (8.23) via Slumberland Records. Our first listen begins with a slight stutter, giving you a 10 second tease before the song immediately bounds off into spring joyousness. For me, I think Andy Pastalaniec’s vocals are the winner on this single, using these slight little shifts that unfold the melody before the listener’s ears; listen to the chorus of “give your heart away/slowly to everyone,” offering this subtle twist just before punching out with a more punctuated delivery. A master craftsman of the jangle sound, Andy and Chime School are ready to deliver a knockout LP when Summer draws to a close.

The Ekphrastics Share Make Your Own Snowboard

If music runs through your veins, you can’t stay away for long…which is why the old ghost called to Frank Boscoe (Vehicle Flips); he picked up and then began anew with The Ekphrastics…and now they’ve got a new LP coming your way. Our first listen to the title track, almost seems like it’s the missing link between indiepop and modern americana sounds. I was drawn towards the rolling chug of those guitar lines, wrapping themselves around each little melodic vocal line. The narrative nature is a grand life lesson too, offering up themes of doing your very best, despite expected outcomes. Honestly, you’ll find a great bit of familiarity luring throughout, and if you keep turning over musical stones, you’ll just reveal more of those special moments hidden beneath the surface. The band release Make Your Own Snowboard on August 16th via Harriet Records.

Pleased to Meet You: Rulitos

Daniel Sanchez reached out to me a bit ago concerning his new project, Rulitos. He described it as sort of an imaginary AirBnB where the ghosts of Nick Drake and Elliott Smith might be lounging and listening to records by Aphex Twin or Nils Frahm. For me, that’s a perfect description, as the four tracks on EP 1 weave back and forth between English and Spanish, utilizing the softness in Sanchez’s voice to unify the mixture between beats and strum of the guitar. On the single below, just listen as the song moves into more ambient territory, with Daniel celebrating all his influences in a tight little 3 minute package. You can celebrate the release of Rulitos’ EP 1 if you’re in Austin by stopping by Vaquero Taquero for a release show with Fuvk, Sprig and Cloud Companion. Otherwise, the EP is out via Flyer Club on June 28th!
