Levitation Interviews: Acid Mothers Temple

Today now marks just one short week away from Levitation Festival kicking off in downtown Austin on Halloween night and running through the weekend. We rather enjoy these quick snapshots of bands coming into town and we hope you also appreciate the exposure to artists you maybe weren’t aware of, or didn’t know so much about. Continuing this fun project is the absolute legendary Acid Mothers Temple. We feel very fortunate to have such a powerhouse participate in our nonsense. #blessed More after the jump.

All responses come from founding member Makoto Kawabata:

ATH: What’s the name of the band/group? Where are you from?

Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O. from Japan

ATH: Describe your groups sound to a new fan using only adjectives.

extreme, enchanted, ecstatic, explosive, emphatic, excitable, exhilarating, etc.

ATH: What was your most recent release? Any planned releases for 2024/2025? Where can we get our hands on a new release?

Trust Masked Replicants from Important Records [USA] (2024)

Holy Black Mountain Side Rolling Heads Ltd. [UK] (2024)

A Dream Of Strange Desires Wrapped Inside A Noise Bam Balam Records [France] (2024)

Shall We Return to Outer Space? Acid Mothers Temple [Japan] (2024)

Live At Cave12 Max Hazard Records [Japan] (2023)

We’ll also release some new studio / live recording albums in 2025.

Find out where you can buy it yourself!

ATH: If you could put on your own one day festival with say 5-10 bands (up to you) who would be on this bill? You may travel through time and use artists who are alive or dead or on hiatus… you get me. Where would this awesome concert be?

– Thomas Binkley & The Studio der Frhen Musik

– Karlheinz Stockhausen

– Captain Beefheart & his Magic Band (1969 line-up)

– Led Zeppelin (If John Bonham had not died in 1980 and continued into the 80’s, I really would love to see that band!)

– Rosina de Pira e Martina

– Off Mask 00 (1986 line-up)

– Hedik [ヘデイク] (1982 line-up)

– Johann Sebastian Bach (Not a composed piece, but a complete improvisation on organ or harpsichord)

– Tenores di Bitti

– Cock E.S.P.

ATH: We always like to hear about what bands are listening to in their van/bus on tour. What are you guys spinning? How long does each member get to play DJ?

We don’t listen any music in the van and hotel in the tour.

Because we don’t all want to hear the same music at the same time. That applies to everything. We don’t eat the same food at the same time either.

Each person eats what they want to eat when they want to eat it. Because the more things we have to share, besides sharing the stage, the more stressful it becomes.

ATH: The band gets to create their own taco pop-up shop at Levitation! Whats the name, and what sort of tacos will you have? Any sides?

Acid Mofo Taco

taco: Szechuan Style Super Spicy Super Numb Beef Tacos (plenty of Sichuan pepper and Habanero!)

side: Fried Octopus!

Thanks again for making this time!

Acid Mothers Temple will play on Thursday, October 31st at The 13th Floor on Red River. More info on all the bands playing with times and locations can be found on the Levitation website.
