KBP6: Friday in Pictures

Get ready folks. This is going to be one big gallery.

Friday was the busiest day for me at Kilby Block Party. I went from gates to close, making friends, seeing new stuff, old stuff and everything in between. The shoot plan was, and order of the gallery is, as follows; Melancholy Club, Being Dead, Been Stellar, Vagabon, Hovvdy, Perfume Genius, Momma, Built to Spill, Car Seat Headrest, Slowdive Youth Lagoon and Beach House. I did go listen to a bit of Rilo Kiley from the crowd (closed photo pit). Like I said, Friday was busy, with a couple of double sets (shooting a song or two and crossing the wilds to catch a bit of another artist’s third). I got to know my fellow photographers a bit better and a few good friends joined in the fun. The rodeo stage was cool and the weather held.

I have notes and a GIANT gallery after the jump.

I am going to split into trophy winners and runners-up (no losers on Friday).

Winners: Slowdive sounded amazing, though I missed the darkness and general atmosphere their production team crafts. Youth Lagoon carried the new songs with strength and gave space to the original hits. Built to Spill hit the jams. Being Dead is a festival act and pulled an early crowd; represent ATX. Momma nailed the harmonies. Been Stellar sounded bigger than they did at SXSW and the space on stage made their performance more dynamic.

Runners-up: Beach House sounded amazing, but their disconnection from the crowd continues to be my complaint in the live setting. Car Seat Headrest had the most rabid fans of the day and sounded awesome, but I don’t get the attachment and mask deos muffle the presence of his voice. Perfume Genius was solid and photogenic as can be, but I felt like I had seen the same set (maybe a good thing as a fan). Hovvdy, represent ATX, played in the harshest light of the day and I admit to splitting time with the Perfume Genius set so not really grading here. Locals in Melancholy Club had a great crowd early and really liked them, but too new to me give them a Winners club award; check them out. Rilo Kiley sounded great, but no access takes the rating down, heh.
