KBP6: Saturday in Photos
OK, I may have lied about Friday being the biggest gallery from Kilby Block Party. Saturday was another super busy day for the me at the fairgrounds.
On the agenda and in order of appearance in the giant gallery to follow are Sloppy Jane, Friko, Jelani Aryeh, George Clanton, Sasami, Panda Bear, IDKHOW, Toro Y Moi, (a cameo by) OVLOV, Gang of Four (featuring Ted Leo on guitar), Wallows, (another cameo by) The Black Angels and finally, WEEZER. As usual, I’ll be sharing a few thoughts on the day after the break. Let’s just say there was some chaos, some calm, some vibes and some nostalgia.

From the rip, it was an interesting day. Sloppy Jane climbed the lighting tower and went into the crowd by the end of the third song. It was curated chaos. Friko balanced aggression and vibe. Jelani Aryeh brought an off-center vocal style and great sounding band to join in, certainly a cool vibe, recommended for sampling. George Clanton fully swung the pendulum to chaos with water throws, inter-song rants on who knows what, emphatic crowd engagement including and staring contests.
I was then sent in a peaceful place when Sasami brought out her french horn. Not often you go from jumping into a the crowd manic dance party to french horn. But that’s Kilby. Panda Bear reassured that reality could be a nice place, “Song for Ariel” being a nice highlight. IDKHOW was great shoot, but technical difficulties meant they were the only, ONLY, band to not start on time. OVLOV, new to me, crowdsurfing mayhem. Gang of Four was one original member, one early member with Ted Leo on guitar and Gail Greenwood (L7) on bass. I do love a man in uniform. Wallows brought star power. The Black Angels were a taste from home and Weezer showed everyone how to do a mega-set. Starting with some Pinkerton hits, playing all of the blue album and finishing with the rest of the hits, it was the most give-em-what-they-want set of the weekend. Sounded great.
