ATH Interviews: Twin Tigers

twintigers_interviewLittle is known about Hotlanta band Twin Tigers other than us knowing that we dig their tunes.  That music loving side of us therefore lead us to believe that you guys should really get to know this band and learn a little about them.  So way back during Fun Fest, Twin Tigers made it through town and we had the chance to speak with frontman Mathew Rain about his band.  I know, leave it to us to take our sweet time posting this one, but we hope you find it worthwhile.  Follow the jump for full interview with Twin Tigers.

ATH: You are a fairly new band and not much information is out there about you guys.  How did you get started or come together as a band if you will?  What’s a story or factoid that would be interesting for our readers to know about you?

Mathew: Well, Aimee [Morris] and I started playing together while we each still had other bands and decided we liked doing that better than our current projects. After that we went through several people on guitar and drums but eventually met Forrest(Hall) and Doug(Crump) as a pair and it was an awesome dynamic immediately. We are a four piece band that has had nine members but I think we’re gonna stop at that. We played our first show with those two opening for Les Savy Fav at the Earl in Atlanta. Then we made an album. Then we went to Fun Fun Fun Fest.  On this last tour with Minus the Bear we got really into taking Hot Shots (Tequila and Tabasco, also known as Prairie Fire) before taking stage.

ATH: You guys were also in town for SXSW.  What was your experience like and will you return in ’10?

Mathew: SXSW was a whirlwind. We played six shows in four days which is less than some bands do but enough to keep you in a daze the whole time. The only band that we got to see was Beach House which was amazing but the whole time you know there is all this great music all around you and you don’t have any time to see it. We will definitely be back in Spring 2010.

ATH: A lot of people compare the scene in Athens and the city to Austin?  How do you feel about that comparison?  Spot on?  Not so much?

Mathew: Austin is amazing and we [Twin Tigers] have actually have had a few conversations about moving there. It has a similar thing going on with lots of great places to play and several bands that are on the way up but with more of a city life feel. There is just a much music but about ten times the population of Athens.

ATH: So what is to be expected from the upcoming album “Gray Waves”?

Mathew: Gray Waves is going to let you know what we’re all about. We will be out on the road making it live till christmas next year.

ATH: Looks like a lot of new stuff is expected around the beginning of the year, anything you are looking forward to?

Mathew: Can’t wait to hear new Liars and new Beach House.

ATH: Prior to the upcoming LP, you guys have released two EPs for free on the internet.  What’s the idea behind the strategy?  Also, are you guys more into that sort of thing or old school vinyl/CDs?

Mathew: The only music I collect anymore is on Vinyl but I’ve got a few weeks worth of stuff in my I tunes. As far as strategy, we really want to have people hear our music. I wish it could all be free but sadly it takes a little bit of money to make albums.

ATH: You’re house is on fire!  AAAHHHH!  What 3 things do you grab that you can’t live without?

Mathew: 1. Cinnamon Ghost, she’s my cat, she might just save herself.
2. White Sigma Acoustic, I got this guitar on my 13th birthday and keep it near the bed for just this reason.
3. Blue blockers, I know that I could get more but I’m gonna need something to stare at the blaze.

ATH: You guys are not actually part of the Fun Fest lineup but are playing an after show at Mohawk.  Are you guys going to the fest?  If so, who are you excited about seeing?

Mathew: We went to the Fest. No Age was there, Dead Confederate was there, it was one of the most well organized festivals I have ever been to. Sadly we had to be gone on Sunday and missed all the awesome bands playing in the rain, but we did get to see the Coathangers at the after party we played.

ATH: What’s been your favorite release this year?  List a few if you wants.

Mathew: Really like Health – Get Color and Deerhunter- Rainwater Cassette Exchange and The Antlers – Hospice.

Thanks again Mathew for making the time for this.  Thanks are also due to Christen for setting this one up for us.
