SXSW Interviews: Unicycle Loves You

Unicycle Loves You is a band that I discovered earlier this year and have been really digging ever since.  Their music creates this fun pop sense that tends to make you nod your head and smile along to the music.  Band member Nikki V was kind enough to answer our tough SXSW questions prior to the festival and her answers can be found after the jump.  We hope you enjoy.

ATH: What is the most challenging thing about being a band during SXSW or another similar festival?

NV: Finding a place to park and poop. At the same time.

ATH: What are some tips you would offer newbie bands to survive during SXSW or just in general on tour?

NV: Bring a bottle of Excedrin for the hangovers and a bottle of Vitamin C to avoid disease. If you’re in a hotel, take the plastic bag they leave you for the ice box and use it to wrap up the TV remote to avoid disease. And never share needles.

ATH: What music are you guys currently jamming in your tour bus?

NV: Lightfoils just put out a brilliant little shoegaze EP we cant stop spinning, plus we brought some Vaselines, Dum Dum Girls, and Disappears that totally hit the spot. We also just bought a bunch of CDs of various lectures exploring the facts and fictions surrounding UFOs and witchcraft. Not mixed very well, but surprisingly poppy. The truth is out there, man.

ATH: Who wins the Euro Cup this summer? It’s okay to tell us you hate soccer.

NV: I’m gonna win, actually. And I hate soccer!

ATH: Due to licensing, you’ve had to change the band name, or else you get sued! What do you change it to?

NV: Jowls and Moon Poon

ATH: It’s fairly early in the musical year.  What’s in store for your band before the world ends in December?

NV: We’re touring through the end of April all across the country. Once we get back home to Chicago we’re hoping to play a summer street fest or two. As the fall descends upon us we’ll pick our favorite doomsday cult and start mixing the kool-aid.

ATH: What’s the best pre-show beverage for the band? Let’s get brand specific! And, what’s the worst free shot we can buy you at SXSW?

NV: Jameson is the love of my life, so if you’re buying, I’ll double-fist those bad boys on the rocks and melt your face off. If you try to give me a shot of any sort of tequila, I’ll be forced to knee you in the gut so I can grab your wallet and buy some Jameson. I’d still do the shot of tequila, though.

ATH: Being out on tour, what’s the one thing you miss about being back at home?

NV: I miss my cats. I made sure to take a bunch of pictures of them before we left so I could stare at them on my phone in the back seat until the battery runs out. Cats rule the world.

ATH: Best band of all time is….? 

NV: Believe it or not, we are actually the best band of all time. Isn’t that weird?
