Underworld’s Drift

I have been a fan of Underworld since Chip slid an import single to me fresh out of the Thursday arrivals box at Technophoilia. It was quite a while ago. Beaucoup Fish is still among my favorite records and if you haven’t invested time with it, by all means.

Travelling in a space that can be abrasive, elegant, haunting or aggressive, the longevity of the band that was born out of a one-hit-wonder (“Doot Doot”, Freur) is impressive. The music created by Karl Hyde and Rick Smith is varied yet identifiable. The latest project is entitled Drift. They have been collaborating with people in unique spaces and the most realized track to be born out of the Drift project to date is “Appleshine”. The song features Georgia and Lewis from Black Country, New Road on violin and flute with visuals by Simon Taylor. I recommend headphones and isolation.

The Foreign Resort is Outnumbered

Looking back at SxSW 2018, given this year’s conference is six weeks away (yikes), seeing The Foreign Resort was among the oddest things. Totally random lineup that night on a horrible “stage” in a terrible venue that hopefully will not be used again this year. …but their set was bad ass.

They’ve released the first confirmation that their perfect post-punk formula will be applied on the pending record due April 5th via Artoffact Records. The title track “Outnumbered” is embedded below. As a bonus, you can check out a remix of “Under Bright Neon Stars” by our friends Nite here.

Austin Stories: Ish At Free Week

It’s been a hot minute since free week, that thing where bands play to help put money in tip jars for the venues during a typically very dead week in Austin that also serves as a test run for SxSW. We obviously have several friends involved in many aspects of Free Week. One friend of mine is Ismael Quintanilla III. He has shared his photos with us before, but he is also part of a pretty rad little music project called The Guacamole Police and Officer Hass. Unique perspective, shooting and playing Free Week, I poked the bear to get some response.

Read on for some of Ish’s great Free Week photos and some insight into putting in the work…

Show Review: Willie Nelson @ ACL (11/19)

Willie is the godfather of Austin being weird. Or at least, that is what we are told. A rebel, legendary country artist, yet a through and through hippy, political activist (kind of), he is responsible for giving the world a collection of amazing songs, but away from those songs, he has a legacy of creating legends around him.

His song craft, both writing and interpreting, was on display Monday night at ACL TV. It was his eighteenth taping, but his first in fifteen years with his band, his way, the songs he wants to play. The recent flurry of activity from the octogenarian has raised eyebrows. Is it a new energy or is it finality? Was this the first of many last times?

Read on for more thoughts and some photos from the venerable Scott Newton.

Mastersystem Say Goodbye

Earlier in the year, we lost Scott Hutchison of Frightened Rabbit. I had very fond memories of meeting him and the band. Unfortunately, several people I know in recent years have lost their battles with depression. It hurts.

mastersystem was a project that allowed members of Frightened Rabbit and Editors to create a heavier 90’s alt-rock sound than either band possessed. It was the last work and last tour for Scott and the band has used footage to put together a video to say goodbye, highlighting the bright spirit, not the dark loss. Proceeds from a limited run vinyl version of “Old Team” that all proceeds will benefit the Scott Hutchison foundation. Look for that November 30th.
