Catching Up With Cold Showers

Cold ShowersI first caught Cold Showers during SxSW at the first show at the freshly remodeled Belmont. Headlined by Jesus and Mary Chain, I was just about thrilled at the possibilities of the showcase when Cold Showers kicked things off. One Canadian speedbump, but indeed, it was an amazing evening.

I have no idea why I thought of that band or that night this weekend, but I was trolling for updates and found this track in a related pile of artist referrals on the cloud. The band has a new record due on the 28th via Dais Records called Matter of Choice. This is awesome. I would love to see a double bill with ATH favorite Weeknight.

Have A Nice Weekend

synkro - photo by Jody HartleyIt is here. The Premier League kicks off tomorrow with Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur. Nathan is United, I am Spurs. ManU should make the top four, because ManU. Spurs are young, very young. They are a wild card, but have the best finisher in EPL in Harry Kane. #COYS

So, you ever hear a song that at once calms you down, but pumps you up? This song by Synkro (Joe McBride) is going to be his debut album Changes on Apollo Records on September 18 fits into that category. I can’t tell if I am relaxed or ready. I dig that.

You can preorder the record on Synro’s Bandcamp and get the first two singles released as mp3s now.

Show Pics: Lower Dens & Jamie XX @ GvsB 5

Jamie XXThis appears to be the summer of The Mohawk for me. At least once a week, more like twice a week right now and that probably won’t stop on average for the duration of the triple-digit season.

Most recently, I was around for a mini-festival presented by our blog friend Gorilla vs. Bear up in Dallas. The Granada played host up IH35. The peeps at The Mohawk agreed, why not play host to all involved and give the bands another date while in Texas before heading their separate ways? Austin’s lineup was Jamie XX, Lower Dens, Bop English, Tei Shi, Yumi Zouma, Prince Innocence and DJ Sober. Not a bad little way to occupy a Saturday night, a night that had a SxSW showcase feeling without the day-drunk post-buzz.

Show Pics: Roger Sellers @ The Mohawk (7/25)

Upload Roger Sellers 27Here comes a little bonus show coverage before the week’s new jams…

Roger Sellers played a set at The Mohawk last weekend. I was there with plus one to hang out after a nice dinner at Perla’s. It was part of Raw Paw’s Alien Summer Series of shows showcasing many great local bands. There were many great acts, but Roger was fresh back from a little touring action. Wanted to see how things are evolving.

Projectors are fun. Notes and pics after the break y’all.

ATX Spotlight: Have A Nice Weekend

Night DriveWill I see anyone out this weekend? Seems everyone I know went to Lolla to photo and party. I want to Lolla, but not really. I reckon I’ll be at GvB at Mohawk. On to the week ending jam.

I hate covers and remixes. …usually.

I insist the best remix of a song is the Sasha remix of Doves‘ “Jetstream“. This Have A Nice Weekend post brings you another of those cover/remix exceptions. Our friends Night Drive have done a cover as the next yearly installment of their Summer Cover series of Perfume Genius‘s track “Queen”. You can download it off the embed. That synthy hook you love from the original song finds new life.

New Stuff From Chad Valley

HugoI am a fan. We are fans. Hugo Manuel’s Chad Valley project was a side deal from the band Jonquil. When I caught Chad Valley doing a fill-in set during SxSW several years ago, I forgot who I was there to see. I’ve since seen Hugo a few times as Chad Valley and once with Jonquil. Left happy each time.

So Chad Valley is back with a new song called “True”, the first single from Entirely New Blue, a ballad to dance pop bliss. Cascine is releasing the album and pre-orders are up now for for a midd-to-late September ship. Along with the album news, Chad Valley is headlining a North American tour, including a stop in Austin at Red7 on October 22.

More New Teen Daze

teendazeMuch like grocery shoppers in Austin a decade ago, Teen Daze has gone organic. The latest track off the album Morning World (due 8/14) to be unveiled on the intarwebs is called “Along”. It has a dreamy light-hearted version of Pink Floyd feeling to it. It is pretty, it is different. Is this the sound in his head that synths filled before he pull it off musically or just a mindshift…

We’ll see what happens to the older material, will it be updated to be earthy, when Teen daze comes through town to play Stubb’s Jr on 9/30.

ACL Single Day Tickets

2befba5e-6a7f-4a91-9771-4c275dcb0b1fNot to be out done by FFFX, ACL Fest has released the daily lineups and opened the store for single day tix. With all three day passes sold out, this is your only access to the fest barring you get brave and start jumping fences (i.e. get slapped around by security).

As for the daily lineups, Friday is pretty stacked with several of the festival band faves for Team ATH with Foo Fighters, Tame Impala, Gary Clark Jr., Albert Hammond Jr. and Mr. Billy Idol. The Strokes will finish out the fest on Sunday and Saturday seems a good night to get aftershow tickets and bail out early.

Buy your single day tickets here. Check the daily lists, Weekend One and Weekend Two.

New Music From New Order

New OrderNew Order is a very important band to me. You people know that. It was one of the shows at Austin Music Hall that will make me miss that place when it is leveled.

As many artists from that pivotal time in my musical life have fallen apart or lost their way, New Order is kind of back to being themselves. No matter how much anyone laments Peter Hook‘s departure, the band has held on the sound that defined it’s later releases once free of Joy Division era material. …and I like those records. It should be a surprise that I am on board for the new self-produced record, Music Complete via Mute, that has the band finding inspiration by working with people like Brandon Flowers, Iggy Pop and Elly Jackson. The fist single “restless” is just straight up New Order. It is a level-setting single that I have a feeling preludes a more up and down affair when listening front to back.
