PYAITK: I Dig This New Division Track

We first featured The New Division a few years back with a track called “Opium”. While they have sent out some work recently, this one stuck with me. The new record Gemini is being released June 2nd and “Copycat” has been my favorite thing previewed so far. It is the synthy goodness I fall sucker to with bass-lines that evolve from disco to wave and darker progressions, eliciting M83 and all bands that influenced them.

So I share, because I care.

ATH @ Austin Psych Fest’s Levitation 2015

Time to reflect on Levitation 2015. I liked the name change away from Austin Psych Fest when it was announced as there are several bands that that may meander towards that genre, fans of the genre may love, but just aren’t “Psych” bands. I hope they continue to expand the diversity of the lineup. With that, let’s talk about this year and then you can gander a whole mess of photos taken at the fest.

Show Pics: Crocodiles @ Holy Mountain (5/6)

We are still catching up on unfinished business from last week. Psych Fest Levitation took over all things on Friday and I was stuck in prep mode before being able to post these pics from a lovely little show at Holy Mountain last week. We ran the Stephin Merritt shots from that night, Crocodiles is next up as we finish out our double-header night with jams. Along for the ride, we had Unknown Relatives and Que Pasa.

Show Pics: Twin Bitches @ The Mohawk (4/30)

We had a fun night of having fun at The Mohawk. While reports of Kaiser Chiefs’ performance at Stubb’s trickled in with some vocal issues attached, Nathan, Nicole and I were enjoying local faves Slow and Jonly Bonly with a first time look at Twin Bitches. No issues here, other than wanting a few more people to join us. It was a full tilt batch of jams featuring broken guitar strings, pedal stomps, bass face and neck strains.

ICYMI: Levitation Schedule Released

LEVITATION-2015-SQUAREWhat’s up, nerds?

Late last week, Austin Psych Fest announced the schedule for this year’s Levitation Festival. I love it. Even if you have a conflict, you will have an opportunity to meander in the fringes and bolster you festival band count. If you don’t want to meander, you’ll have nice breaks between bands to allow for extra-curricular activities like, ya know, eating and drinking and not dehydrating and shrivelling. It is not a sprint, it is a marathon.

Can’t wait to be miserably tired when The FLaming Lips take the stage on Sunday at 11:45pm…

Show Pics: Dan Deacon @ The Mohawk (4/23)

Dan DeaconI think Austin may have skipped Spring.

I had never been a Dan Deacon fan, but recent tracks wooed me out last Thursday to The Mohawk to finally check out what many friends claimed to be an “event”, even chastising me for not having been. Indeed, I had a good time and, indeed, I enjoyed the live set musically along with the spectacle. Dan was joined on the lineup by Ben O’Brien and Prince Rama.

I have plenty of pics and a few thoughts after the break. Join me, won’t you?

I’m Going To Dan Deacon @ The Mohawk (Tonight)

Image by Frank HamiltonIt is Thursday. Didn’t much feel like seeing Matt & Kim again, but kinda wanted to get out to a show and I took a look around. I have been on the fence about Dan Deacon for a while, but the latest effort puts more emphasis and fun instead of challenge. OK, you have me interested. Add a little Prince Rama action #trustfall. Add some bonus wordbeats courtesy Ben O’Brien. Add it is at The Mohawk. Add that it is almost the weekend. $16 at the door, allegedly. It is like they are paying you to have fun. What a bargain…

Let’s party.

Show Pics: Eternal Summers & Turbo Fruits @ Holy Mountain (4/20)

Eternal SummersIt was 4/20 and team ATH braved the pot-laden air in Austin to go check out several great bands playing the Monday night show at Holy Mountain. We got a double headlined deal with Eternal Summers and Turbo Fruits along with Kay Odyssey and Rose Selavy. Indie pop gems, rock and/or roll, surf inflicted pop, we had an evening of subtle sub-genre loving. I chucked the manual focus primes into the camera bag and captured moments.

Brief thoughts and plenty of shots await…

Have A Nice Weekend

l1krxxmwzbja8ea3tpliLove me some Ghostly International. We’ve stepped up hip hop coverage with Tactic joining the team. I traditionally find the zeros and ones when Nate doesn’t beat me to it (or I hate looking at music related stuff after SxSW photo processing benders). This track will be the closer to Ghostly Swim 2, available to sample and pre-order now; it is a fourteen track compilation featuring the likes of Shigeto, Heathered Pearls and CFCF. Galcher Lustwerk’s “In The Place” takes a beautiful sonic landscape and layers party rhymes delivered in a monotone smoothness that lets you just focus on the cadence with words disappearing or smile as the juxtapostion of being about it is delivered over the sonic landscape.

In it to win it. Check out a few other tracks on Ghostly Swim 2 here.

New Ben Browning Cut Isn’t A Copy

Ben Browning is in Cut Copy. I love Cut Copy. What to do when one of the gents does some solo work? Usually it ends up being derivative of the band, but this isn’t the case. It is a very simple and clean synth disco jam, slightly surfy and plenty bright.

“Make It Easy” is the first track available from the pending release called Turns. The record is due in the summer on Yellow Year Records.
