Night Drive Release New Music + Video

Night DriveIf you have taken our advice over the last couple of months, you would have already heard this song during a Night Drive set. “Easy to Lie” was an instant ATH IT Department favorite; slightly droning, shimmy inducing, ringing guitar layer. Just so happens, this jam is now available for streaming at the Night Drive soundcloud and to push things over the top, they did a video for the song. It is a stylish throwback, something these guys get pegged for musically, so it all feels right. Click here for iTunes buying.

Confetti.

Title Track From Barbarossa’s Imager

BarbarossaNathan forwarded this track over to the IT Dept. and within a few seconds of clicking the stream it link, I knew I was going to post it. Tones, contrast, waves progressing and complementing, a controlled vocal effect…

Barbarossa is James Mathé, he comes to us with an impressive resume, working with Jose Gonzalez and Junip, has a couple of solo records already, but the latest is aimed squarely at the IT Department. Gradually layered, but with spaces between, melancholy and elegant, you can download the title track at the site linked for the price of an email address. The album is due May 11th on Memphis Industries.

Show Pics: Corners @ Hi-Dive (2/18)

CornersWhen I have to travel for the day job (international super-conglomerate type thing), I try to find shows going on to get out in the foreign scene and see some bands in a way I might not have a chance to otherwise; like seeing Temples and Warpaint in 300 person venues and catching Merchandise in Richmond after missing their show in Austin. Last time I was in Denver, it was a dead week, but not so this time around and since I had seen Hi-Dive show up on the tour stops for several of my favorite bands so Corners at Hi-Dive on a Wednesday night it was.

Usually, I am guarded about my enthusiasm for Wednesday night local openers, but Best Creeps and Hair Cult were both outstanding. Click for a few words and plenty of pics…

PYAITK: New Chromatics

ChromaticsI didn’t miss it, but I didn’t post it. I am sorry. I was sidetracked and found a buried tab.

Chromatics will release their latest album called Dear Tommy in March on Italians Do It Better (of course) and to celebrate, they are sharing a track every week (allegedly) and we start the sharing with “JUST LIKE YOU”. It is a slowly evolving tune that never loses its way. I tend to like anything Chromatics and this is no exception. Download via the soundcloud thingy down there.

Check Out Vessels

1932274_10152637217368725_8071902935186133269_nI have been allowed to listen to this new record from Vessels. It is called Dilate and it is an early best-of 2015 for me. I have a feeling it will stick with me through the year. To help intro you, XLR8R has offered up “Echo In” for download. Comprised of five lads from Leeds, they layer in depth to what is happening and I want to see this live.

Seriously, this record is outstanding and I call this merely an intro track.

Show Pics: Knifight Release Party @ Cheer Up’s (2/6)

Upload Knifight Release 04We are championing the locals. One of the bands we love is Knifight and while we sometimes think a few locals play too many shows, we cannot accuse Knifight of over-saturation. When we get a chance, we usually take it. Gothy, gazy, noisy, wavey, industrial and bad-ass, the band has a new album out, seven tracks that are given space to breathe progress.

To celebrate the album, Cheer Up hosted a show with GOST and ATH faves Night Drive to dance in the night. Head past the break and get a few thoughts and the usual batch of pics.

Show Review: The Dead Space @ Hotel Vegas (2/3)

Dead SpaceNathan and I were on double show duty. We started the evening at Red7 for Zola Jesus. We made notes, we shared them with Nicole, she didn’t entirely agree with what we had to say which we are OK with.

…and now for something completely different.

We made our way to Hotel Vegas for some jams to catch Beth Israel, Ghetto Ghouls and The Dead Space. Click past the break for a couple notes and plenty of pics…

Perfect Pop From COIN

coin_mediumThis is COIN. We last talked about them in October of 2013 and this song popped up on my radar of things to listen to and I got around to it. Glad I did.

We are suckers for superbly executed power pop and COIN has it the formula in spades. Synthy flourishes, memorable chord structures and a wicked hook. There is something in the water in Nashville right now; they are happier people, I guess. This single is a hint of the record to come, Looking forward to hearing the rest. They are on the road for a segment of the current Grizfolk tour so DC, Philly, Boston and Brooklyn readers will be able to see them starting tomorrow night and on to the weekend and though I wasn’t wildly impressed with Grizfolk maybe COIN‘s set will make it worth the ticket…

A Night Out: Citadel, Deep Cuts, Shivery Shakes (1/29)

A Night Out Citadel Deep Shakes 43I love the fact that we can just head out any night in this town and find not one good local show, but several. had a new lens to play around with so it seemed the perfect excuse to head out. Out I went last Thursday night and I got to check out Citadel‘s second show ever, Deep Cuts in town from Houston and our ATH faves Shivery Shakes.

I will take you through the night with a few notes and plenty of pics right after the break…

Show Pics: RBSS January ’15 @ Red7 (1/22)

RBSS Jan15 31I really do appreciate what Red Bull Sound Select is doing for locals. By selecting local acts to open for a touring group or a local mainstay, charging a cheap cover that involves getting there early, several bands are getting a few more eyes than a normal show. This, of course, is a pet peeve of ours; the venues and booking people go out of their way to get you a good lineup for your show-going dollar so get there to see the openers, geez.

The latest edition had an act form Dallas call Dark Rooms, local faves Orthy and was headlined by Slow Magic to bring the crowd. In fact, I was quite surprised by the masses there to see Slow Magic. There just might be something to this whole EDM fad. Heh.

Plenty of pics and more thoughts to follow…
