Show Pics: A Night Out In Austin (11/29)

Night DriveI love the shows that happen during the Thanksgiving weekend. Students are home, it is usually local bands hanging out with friends, perhaps getting back from the road or just popping up to keep sharp before heading into the studio. Last Saturday was just that kind of night with two of my favorites in Night Drive and Shivery Shakes at Cheer Up Charlie’s and Holy Mountain, respectively. As a bonus, I got to see The David Ruffins and Ishi and so many friends that things degraded into full on shenanigans. Yes, shenanigans, full on. #lightpaintingcockandballs

Back to the music, The David Ruffins sounded like Austin “in the day”, Ishi brought the kimono-beard dance party, Night Drive made a point to engage every single person in the crowd before heading off to the studio (yay!) and Shivery Shakes sounded super tight after a stint on the road.

New Track From The Soft Moon

15408a93-08d7-4e3f-b05b-2dc72648dac4Our friends at Captured Tracks sent over news of The Soft Moon‘s latest album. The album is called Deeper and will be released March 31st. Along with this news comes a stream of the lead single called “Black”. Way too soon. I have to wait four months? I broke my SxSW rule of not seeing a band twice with these guys (erm, guy in that the band is actually Luis Vasquez).

Deeper is the product of isolationism in a new country and if this lead track signifies anything, it may be the best yet. Dark, sparse but huge, bottled aggression…

Show Pics: Caribou @ The Mohawk (11/23)

CaribouYou ever notice how a bunch of tours either kick off or finish up in Austin? In the case of Caribou, they were finishing up a successful run out in support of the latest effort Our Love. The bummer about being the last stop, no vinyl at the merch table. The best part, whoa hooollly shit is the band tight. Let me get this out of the way, this was one of the best live performances of “electronic” music I have ever seen. Dan Snaith and his team of musicians have found a way to make those key elements, the live drum and overlayed organic pieces of the recorded material, present in the live show. Flutes to extra percussion to ringing guitar licks, the material comes to life that then absorbs the crowd into a hypnotic tunnel.

I feel so jealous of the people in Toronto that get that homecoming show.

Austin Psych Fest Is Now Levitation

L2015-DATES-ANNOUNCE-1-800x6001We have some more festival related news form the Austin Psych Fest people.

First, the fest will hence forth be referred to as Levitation. I’m cool with it, better branding than Austin Psych Fest and it will keep people from pitching a fit when a band that isn’t “Psych” is announced on the lineup. Second, the aforementioned lineup is coming 12/3. Third, the dates that lineup will be playing out at Carson Creek Ranch again will be May 8-10. Fourth, Transmission is now engaged in the festival’s goings-on. Finally, there are a few early-bird passes for sale, y’all.

Ticket info here.

Second Round of SxSW Music Artists

sxsw-music-logoIt is time to share the next big batch of bands and people and things that the masses will be chasing from venue to venue and between day-party tents during SxSW.

It still feels too far away to get excited, yet I get a flutter. THere are some pretty good names on the list, including local faves, ATH faves and some good touring acts that otherwise may not be in town. In no particular (alphabetical), here are some highlights: Beat Connection, The Cribs, The Districts, EX-Cult, Gang of Four, King TUff, Nikki Lane, Mirror Travel, My Jerusalem, Pujol, Sophie, Surfer Blood, SURVIVE, Ting Tings, Twin Shadow, Yukon Blonde and Yumi Zouma. One kind of cool thing SxSW is doing now is SxSW fm and they have a “podcast” on Soundcloud as a preview of this round of artists. Check it out below and head past the break for the full list. #itisaconference #notafestival

Show Review: We Were Promised Jetpacks @ The Mohawk (11/12)

We Were Promised JetpacksAfter a short day of rest from festivaling, the ATH crew was back at it again on Tuesday night, braving the cold weather for an evening of Scottish indie rock music outside at The Mohawk. The bill was stacked for a great night–The Twilight Sad‘s heavy indie rock and the more poppy sound of We Were Promised Jetpacks offered a mixing of genres for the evening, but kept it rock and roll. It was a special evening for all, but an even more special evening for B.Gray and Nathan, who were celebrating their Manniversary. Read on for a double perspective of the show from Nathan and Nicole, as well as pretty pictures from B.Gray.

What To Eat At FFF9

Formula 1Soon. You will be hungry. Festing is hard work. You burn the calories with those 16oz curls. You will shimmy your way to slim if you don’t grab a snack or two. Thanks to the concept of mobile food vendors laser-focused on doing one thing really well, music festivals went from horrible concession stand gut bombs to delightfully crafted dishes, or at least a gourmet version of the gut-bomb.

So let’s review a few killer options to gnaw on at Fun Fun Fun Fest…
