I Was A Tourist In My Own Town

Formula OneI know FFF9 is upon us, but I would like to reflect on Formula One. It is something you here on the news. It is what many of you mistakenly call that thing out there on the east side of the airport. A long time fan, F1 weekend is just like a music festival to me. It is three days of party and day-drinking. But F1 weekend, with help from Transmission, has actually been able to provide a bit of music festival to go with the festival of speed.

You see, having Circuit of the Americas in Austin is a rather special thing. It is the only track to host Formula One in the United States and that means nearly a half-billion worldwide viewers know where we are and what we do. It hosts MotoGP, Tudor United and World Endurance Championship. It also has a big-ass music venue and that cool Loch Ness monster looking tower. Like I said, it is kind of a big deal. COTA is also nice enough to host Fan Fest downtown. This year, I hit night one with the Haloween crowd Friday and was lucky enough to check out Duran Duran Saturday. You will get a few DD cause I already posted the big gallery, but you will get plenty of Broncho, Devotchka, De La Soul, crowd shots and stuff from the track. I skipped Kid Rock, though regretting that a little. O_o

Show Pics: Duran Duran @ ACL Live (11/1)

Duran DuranIt was Formula One weekend in Austin. If you are oblivious, F1 is the biggest thing to hit Austin from a worldwide awareness perspective, ever. People from everywhere know that Austin is Live Music Capital of the World and has the best BBQ, period.

One other thing F1 brings is a few added festival type events, we’ll get into Fan Fest in a later post, but a special event like Duran Duran at ACL Live? I gotta go. I have proclaimed my love of DD before when they came for SxSW a few years back. They have influenced so many of the current crop of indie/pop/dance acts out there, no doubt. Throw in getting to see local boys Knifight open was an added treat.

Show Pics: Merchandise @ Strange Matter (10/23)

MerchandiseI missed my Austin, but Cleveland was pretty cool and I ended up getting an Austin vibe from Richmond, Y2K Austin vibe. It is a smaller place, college town, passed over by national tours and a filler stop for guys in vans.

ATH on the road checked in at Strange Matter. It is a venue that again reminds me of the old Emo’s inside, only with a full kitchen that can satisfy your burger cravings while you girlfriend gnoshes on Vegan faire. Playing at Strange Matter was Merchandise. Italy’s Ninos Du Brasil are on the road with Merch and locals Dead Fame and Bermuda Triangles rounded out the bill.

Have A Nice Weekend

avatars-000108090749-xgydxe-t500x500I’ll be processing photos of the Merchandise show last night on the plane. I land late. That’s my Friday night, but after that, pizza party and catching up on my shows from the week. Jealous, right? What are your plans? Tell on the Bookface or the Tweets.

Richmond is pretty. They have this thing called “fall”. It is really neat. It is like this thing we call “winter”.

So google this “Don’t Tell Zebra”. Watch the funny video. More importantly, listen to the jam by Mansions On The Moon embedded below about what happened last night and make it your weekend anthem. #cantremembershit #party

Show Pics: Temples @ The Grog Shop (10/20)

TemplesCleveland. Many people groan at the idea of going to Cleveland, but I had heard many good things about the city by the big-assed lake. Au contraire, this is a good food town with plenty of venues to check out jams. I went to Lola last night, Michael Symon’s fancy place, and dear jeebus it was good. The night before I went to catch Temples at The Grog Shop. I was treated to locals Nowhere and Philly’s The Districts and dear jeebus, it was good.

So click through and see a bit of the Cleveland scene…

COTA Fan Fest Schedule

boom2Transmission took over COTA Fan Fest. The lineup went from electric violin and cheesy country to now having Joan Jett, Devotchka, De La Soul, Those Darlins’, Fishbone, Broncho, Black Joe Lewis and more. Not bad. The schedule has been posted and the best part is that it is FREE.

Put that on your schedules for Halloween fun on Formula One weekend. Don’t be skeered, it doesn’t get too crowded and most people I have met while out at the track for the race have been great, all of them in love with Austin. Also, if you want a free F1 primer, head to Alamo South Lamar tonight and next Wednesday for FREE screenings of Senna (a great documentary) and Rush (Ron Howard movie about the Lauda/Hunt rivalry), respectively.

Show Pics: Erasure @ ACL Live (10/18)

ErasureIf you don’t like Erasure, I don’t care. I do. The lady friends of my younger days liked Erasure, so I liked Erasure. …at least that was my excuse to the metal-head, skater bros friends I had. One of the best shows I saw last year was Erasure at the very same venue, so I had high expectations. And to help meet those expectations, instead of a DJ, the lads form London brought along LA’s Superhumanoids as the opener.

10644280_10154566418645301_7516351349019480014_oNathan intro’ed you to Niagara in a post in June. Their album, Don’t Take It Personality, is now out. I went back to listen today and figured I would share this one.

So, y’all have a nice weekend. I’ll see you at Erasure or Sharon Van Etten/Allo Darlin’. Busy Saturday. Home tonight. Flank steak marinated in red wine garlic, thyme, oregano and olive oil, maybe some roasted leeks, I like to cook. #themoreyouknow
