I Believe That We Will Win

This is fine.

Sometimes you have to pay the toll. The heat was taking the toll. Stubb’s is probably just a little too small to host Cut Copy these days. The band is stuck in popularity in the gap that Austin can’t quite handle and I doubt Cedar Park Center would be a popular destination for an indie-pop electro Aussie dance party.
Damn. It was hot. We sweat, we dance, we sweat more. We wouldn’t have had it any other way.

What a fantastic night of local (and nearly local) talent.
She Sir opened and are getting tighter and tighter. The material from their latest effort was the perfect start to the night, engaging or the background music for patio time, you get to choose.
Young Girls played new stuff, the entire EP and a few of the hits that made us fall for them. Now a lean three piece and bolstered by Nicholas powering away on drums, Pete and Charlie split front man duties. I am biased, but I loved their set the mostest.
Ramesh is the latest in the ATH Records stable, test-pressing in Nathan’s mitts. Two members of the brand new backing band are friends from Shivery Shakes; they had about a day to learn the material. If the material can be this good live as a new ensemble, I cannot wait for them to get more time together. This record could be one of the best of the year.
Abram Shook had the backing vocalists on stage this time around and as he put it, the songs just get sexier. We love this record, go see him ASAP.
PICS A PLENTY AFTER THE BREAK!!!
A little end the work week viewing…
When it came time to figure out what to do the night before the Holiday last Monday, we figured something relaxing, maybe a little fancy, friends, etc. How about Orthy and Royal Forest playing the W’s Living Room Live series? Drink specials? Sure. Couches, awesome! We even made dinner reservations before hand. I wore shorts that weren’t cut down from longer origins.
Our friend asked if my little camera that joined us was one of the black & white specialty types, which keyed me to shoot the night in monochrome. Why not? I was “on vacation”

True Sincerity Vol 1 is out, an interview zine by our friends Bryan Parker. There was a free show to commemorate and we were able to get on the guest list (along with everyone else).
For my troubles, I caught Borrisokane, Feverbones, a song of Alex Napping and blisteringly fun set by Major x 3. I missed Tele Novella cuz I got sleepy; it was a long week. As Nate predicted, it w\as a night to enjoy local revelry and celebrate the creativity of like-minded individuals in town.

APF7 has come and gone. Charlie Megira is my new favorite thing. Temples surprised me (ignore their flowery songs and cut to the big stuff). Think No Think were my favorite locals. The Horrors were dark, but sounded great even from the photo pit. The Fresh & Onlys are our new favorite people in rock and/or roll.
I thought I would try something new as we work out the rest of the bugs in the site after an unplanned server move (that sucked) by embedding a slideshow of the giant gallery from my photo site. Feedback welcome.

This week’s PYAITK smooth jam is from Drop Electric. It is called “Waking Up to the Fire”. It is the title track and an absolute beauty. Austere synth waves lead you in to more layers of layers and simple builds as the vocals interleave and let the super hooks that are strong, yet melancholy, yet empowering. Smoothly woven trumpet track.
The band, out of DC, is on Lefse Records, a label that currently is nurturing some great artists.
We have a little guest photo action for you today. Friend of the program, David Hall, was on the list for the random Spoon show at Hotel Vegas the other night. Just so happens, he needed an assist due to scheduling issues, so my camera was able to attend as his +1.
Allegedly, it was an hour of the hits and no new stuff. Sounds like a good way to knock the rust off the band. Comedians get to work over new material in clubs, so should bands. Head past the break to see a few sweet photos by D. Hall.
Their scene, their city, discovery, being a band, labels, projects, Spotify, sports – We had the opportunity to sit down with The Fresh & Onlys and talk music and people, and eventually a lot of sports. The interview went long and we love it. I thought about cutting it down, but these guys put it out there and to cut it would be a shame.
Big ups to the gentlemen for taking the time, being conversational and quite candid. It could have been even longer had my camera not over-heated, yeah, it over-heated.

The day job has changed a bit for me recently to include a little more travel. That means the occasional opportunity to take in a show in another city and get to check out some new venues and make new friends. I ended up in Salt Lake City the same time as Warpaint, who have stirred a bit of controversy lately, and arranged to be able to shoot a show at the Urban Lounge. Opening the night was James Supercave.
Read on for a little photo walk, some thoughts about the venue and plenty of pics.
