Mauger Shares There Goes Your Man

Belgian artist Mauger has popped up on this site on several occasions, and the latest track feels like a great start to the week, from my ears anyways. When it begins, there’s a gentle softness, almost a kind of coy little croon that slinks into fragile indie pop. Then, you get a little plot twist with a nice little nod from the electronic belly, setting up the chorus with this perfect little twist that delivers that emotional connection you’ve been seeking. He’s still wrapping up the pieces to his new record, so keep an eye out for more in the very near future.

Seems like this year so far, it’s been one step forward and two steps back, but feel like I got locked in during this short week, allowing me to get a solid bit of rock n’ roll out from underneath my inbox. We had a lot of Austin stuff to go through…MIEN, Gus Baldwin, Edith Frost, Skloss, Midcard…and maybe we consider Cross Record still! Lots of other new things popped up including the latest from Accessory and the Golden Dregs, which were to of my favorite tracks we go under. Several of the jams are some slow-burns, so take your time and enjoy the rock around you.

Shapes Like People Release Ambition Is Your Friend

Are you one of those music nerds that feels your body sway when you get some crisp guitar jangles in your ear? Yea? Well, you’re going to crank the new Shapes Like People tune super loud, as the opening 20 seconds alone will have you smilingly drifting through your home with arms out wide like some soaring bird. I’d have been sold alone there, but they swirl back into that moment, enjoying a bit of melodic power pop warmth, offering you the most soothing vocal pop moment you’ll get to hear today. Crisp guitars, swirling melodies, and all of it in this nice little package that will make your day! You can find this single on their forthcoming Ticking Haze LP, out this March.

Magana Releases Bad News EP

Jeni Magana‘s Teeth caught us off-guard, displaying the craftsmanship of a talented artist whose often spent her time buoying other people’s works. The Bad News EP fits perfectly into that narrative, with the opening track a brilliant pop track that lets the vocals drift, and while they embrace the dreamiest realms of her voice, there’s also this little textural bounce that comes from a some woodwind instrument; I loved the build in that opening number, and it sets up the concept as this album serving as that middle spot between the coldness at the end of Winter and the blossoming of early Spring buds. Frog Share Mixtape Liner Notes Var. VII

Grog brought a lot of success and praise to New York outfit Frog, so how do you follow that up? Well, you release a record titled 1000 Variations on the Same Song, one of which you get to hear below. This one lives in a sort of folk-rock adjacent warehouse, like the makings of an early Modest Mouse demo, particularly as they use the banjo as dominant musical element here. But, the chorus it’s some super high notes, dropping in the range like some sort of mega pop star; it adds a layer that you’ve come to expect from Frog recordings, taking your expectations of indie rock and stretching them to wherever the wind will blow. Audio Antihero will drop the 1000 Variations… on February 14th.

Austin Psych Fest Returns This April

After a brief break, then transitioning to Levitation, Austin Psych Fest made its return last year; they’ve slimmed it down and made it two action packed days of psychedelic jams for the masses. Today they’ve announced the new lineup, and the headliners are surely going to turn heads. You’ve got Explosions in the Sky and Godspeed at the top…also Yo La Tengo and Kim Gordon, but I want you to remember that the bottom of the bill is where the folks at Resound and Levitation excel. I mean, Dummy put out one of the best records last year, and I still feel like the cool kids haven’t quite caught on yet. Oh, and Dean Wareham is going to do a Galaxie 500 set! MIEN Announce Evil People

I love a good supergroup, especially when its made up acts we already love…and bonus points if it features Austin folks. So, here’s MIEN, which features members of Black Angels, Golden Dawn Arkestra, Elephant Stone and Earlies…all who’ve been regulars here, and now they’ve got a new album, Evil People. This new single is like a proto-psych; it’s filled with these pulsing notes and shattering guitar squalls, yet just as I thought the tune was pigeon-holed, they mix it up and move into different territory after the two minute mark, taking on a melodic moment to let the song breathe and open up. Looking forward to seeing where this album goes; MIIEN comes out on April 18th via Fuzz Club.

Jo Passed Drops Weekend

It’s been quite some times since Jo Passed dropped any new music…and to be fair, the song today is one of, if not THE, first Jo Passed song. That said, the tune’s had its own journey, finally being reimagined after its initial creation in order to prep audiences for a fresh record on the way. Throughout, the jam walks a fine line between soft-spoken narrative and moody rocker; it’s that balance that sets up repeat listens as you get to ride the crests and falls of the tune as it blasts in all the right spots. Plus, there’s some fun musicianship that indicates we’re in for a real treat when that new album comes to light!

The Golden Dregs Prep Godspeed LP

I’ve always been attracted to baritone vocals, and Benjamin Woods has long been offering up his deep tones for my enjoyment…and yours as well. His project, The Golden Dregs, are set to release a new record, and the first single has him hanging in a sort of middle ground between Western balladeer and dark lounge crooner. While the verses have his wonderful wordplay, it was the chorus that sold me; it’s not over the top, but there’s definitely a bold swell that I couldn’t pull myself away from, and I’m hoping you’re on the same page on your end…it gets even more special when the latter half layers the female vocal too. Godpseed will be released on April 25th via Joy of Life International.

Brand New Cross Record

We’ve heard whispers of a new Cross Record album coming our way, as Emily shared some images that apparently are stills from the current video. This new single comes with the news of Crush Me, the newest album from the former Austinite’s project. There seem to be a lot of ups and downs in the finishing of the record, with major label interest coming then fading; accompaniment showed up, then disappeared, all of it leading to a sentiment of loss and confusion that surely bleeds through the notes on this album…though that clearly shouldn’t be a representation of the musical quality that we hear here; it’s the same striking work that has always kept the artist revered on our pages. Crush Me will be out on March 21st via Ba Da Bing Records.
