Starting off our Monday with a bit of a different role this week, and rather than pull out a “Last Week’s Jams” with five songs, we’re circling back to the cool stuff we missed, like this new single from Juanita Stein. The British singer just dropped The Weightless Hour, and with that, she’s offered up a visual of album standout “Motionless,” and it’s drifting brand of indie rock definitely caught my ear. You’ll get a slight smokiness, kind of hazy, but brimming with power, much like you’d get from an Angel Olsen or Sharon van Etten, and in that you get a moving performance that we hope gets you to check out her new LP!

Geoffrey O’Connor Shares Let’s Make Love Feel Good Again

While I’m still perplexed by the ever-present penguin in the new series of videos from Geoffrey O’Connor, I’m totally thrilled by his pop penmanship, as he’s written another swooning pop track I adore. Casually shimmying into the verses, he works the track like a singer controlling his audience; you can almost feel him moving across the stage as he locks into that connection. But, the big winner is the chorus, as longtime ATH hero Emma Russack lends her voice, effortlessly lifting the melody that rains upon the listener with each falling note. Another gem from the forthcoming I Love What We Do, out on February 14th via Dinosaur City.

Don’t Worry Share Ever So Clear

As they celebrate ten years together (Congrats!), Essek outfit Don’t Worry went back into the studio to reflect on the mark, and came out with this power ballad, a reflection on seeing your whole self, “ugly bits and all.” I can’t help but to fall for the vocals here, landing somewhere between Americana and British pop, albeit with a bit of punk flare. Still, the song works through the melody, filling in the space behind with cascading guitar riffs and joyous backing vocal notes. It’s all about pulling the emotion out of every note, which is where the group have excelled over past years, so crank it up! Courtesy of Specialist Subject.

Skeleten Drops Bodys Chorus Single

It looks like Skeleten is aiming to drive folks crazy with the title of their latest tune, “Bodys Chorus,” as my writing program has all sorts of red lines under this post. Still, the musical craft is perfect for opening up into what, for me, is a holiday work; you get this sort of low-end industrial beat, careful to kind of build an R&B groove that allows for the vocals to seep into the track’s core. Each vocal note rides just on top of the mix, almost as if it’s a textural layer being built to buoy the sound itself, then furthered by this ringing guitar note that dances across the mixture. Mentalized, the new Lp, comes out in February via 2MR/Astral.

Golden Tiles Drop Debut EP

If you’re in need of some lo-fi indie rock to stream over this next week, you’re not going to find much better than the debut EP from Portland’s Golden Tiles. “Tale We Told” takes on a slow-burning cigarette mode, just kind of slowly moving in and out of delicious little melodies and distorted waves of joy; I loved the light-hearted nature of the vocals throughout. Maybe you’re looking for something that feels GBV adjacent, so might we suggest pressing play on “100%,” which uses that heavy bass before careening off into it’s own lo-fi energy. The First EP is chock full of really great moments that keep you circling back, so special shout out to Antiquated Future for putting this on our radar!

Welcome to Concrete Share New EP

At this time of year, things are really slowing down, and I expect a huge arbitrary set of “Best Of” to pop up any day…but me personally, I’m still focused on the new stuff, like this new EP from New Zealand’s Welcome to Concrete. There are some of your Oceanic tendencies, especially on a song like “Long Shot,” though I’ll admit I was drawn to the earnest alternative vibes of “Seeing.” In a sense, it kind of reminds me of a more melodic Sebadoh, flirting with the edges of grunge riffs while drawing upon some melancholic melodies. There were a lot of jams, and there wasn’t a lot of time, and all that to say, I still got an excuse to write about the new Cistern EP, with it’s banging opening track included below. Prism Shores continued to shell out hits, while Austin act SKLOSS return with news of their signing to Fuzz Club Records. The Rishis dropped in some delightful psychedelic pop, if that’s your bag, and if not, well maybe you get a little folk on your feet and crank up new Will Johnson for our ears. Stream Cistern’s New Standard EP

Over the last month or so, I’ve definitely been on board the Cistern hype train, perhaps even throwing the wood on the fire. Today, you can stream the entirety of New Standard, and in doing so, you’ll be filled with this angular punk energy that should carry some enthusiasm into your afternoon. The catchy enthusiasm of “Pendulum” reminds me of the Futureheads, stabbing guitar energy that makes your feet stomp on the club floors. For me, “Crisis” is one of my favorite jams of the year, and I keep cranking it up, much to the dismay of my 6th period class, who are trying to finalize their projects. File it somewhere between Ought and Omni, and most certainly under awesome!

King Husky Offers Running Single

Our friends over in Norway have promised to keep us abreast of the best in power-pop, with the likes of I Was a King and the High Water Marks among our favorites (always and forever). Today, we’re jamming to King Hsky, which is the new recording project from Vidar Linda, known for his work in metal band Kvelertak, though the pop below is definitely a left turn. It’s marked by the feathered melodies, wrapped around the ornate ring of the guitars, with some charming backing vocals from Anne Frokedal (of IWaK); the snapping of the keys and drums in unison builds this vibrance too, pushing rays of sunshine through your speakers. Be on the lookout for a self-titled LP to drop next Spring via Hype City.

Clara Ziegler Releases These Are the Good Days

It may seem like I’m all up in my feelings today, based upon the musical selection, but I assure you, I’m just writing about the hits as they come, like this Clara Ziegler tune that washed ashore from Sweden. It’s one of the tracks that features on her new These Are the Good Days EP, highlighting the smoky nature of her voice. The musical element throughout is fairly light, allowing the song to mostly operate as a vehicle for the vocal performance. Synths wash across the backdrop, with a faint percussive pulse working in; it all leads to the 4 minute mark (or damned near) where the beat opens up and guitars swirl, twisting that voice into something more angelic.
