We’re drawing to the very end of what has been a great season of rock n’ roll, and what better way to wrap things up with a visit from The Babies.  The part Vivian Girls, part Woods, super group blasts into town fresh off the release of their very excellent Our House on the Hill.  Their music alone would be reason to go to this show, but we’ve also got the benefit of some incredible openers, namely Deep Time and Gal Pals.

Grim New Tune from Wax Idols

With the release of No Future, Wax Idols quickly made my radar as a band to keep an eye on, and news has finally come out that the group’s second outing is being geared for release on March 26th from Slumblerland Records. Listening to the first single from Discipline & Desire, you can tell that the group has put a darker mood into the record, replacing the anthemic power-punk with a more haunting array of sounds.  For one, singer H. Fortune has a more pronounced, albeit more gloomy, vocal presence, while the rest of the band does their best to round out the complete emotional state.  This is shaping up to be a nice gem for your March listening pleasure.

Mellow Pop from Sweet Baboo

Man, this is possibly my favorite discovery of the week, and it’s only Monday.  Sweet Baboo is a Welsh songwriter who has warmed my heart today with his latest single, which will be featured on his upcoming album, Ships–slated to be released by Moshi Moshi in April.  When the tune opens, it’s a smooth pop croon, though the accent gives it sort of that oddball Devandra Banhart quality.  That’s all well-and-good, but the eruption of horns and vocals during the chorus is quite remarkable.  I have a feeling that this tune will find its way to haunt my mind and ears for sometime to come; I hope it does the same for you.

Another New Jam from Cayucas

It seems that we’re in for a whole lot of infectious pop if things continue to go as planned for Cayucas.  They are releasing their debut 7″ for Secretly Canadian this month, and this tune is another that wears a bright sunny influence.  It’s almost got a tropicalia feel to it, which definitely is something that I enjoy.  If you listen closely you can hear the warm backing vocals just barely pushing through, creating an effect that only strengthens the relaxed feel of this song.  I’ll have no problem playing this number over and over again.

Fresh Rocker from Wimps

I’m really excited for my friend Sarah up in Seattle who has been a huge help to ATH throughout her time working with various labels.  She’s just recently started her own End of Time Records, and the first signee is Wimps.  The Seattle three-piece features a line-up of the city’s finest, and most seasoned, rockers from Meth Teeth to Intelligence, demonstrating their unending potential.  Our first taste of the group is a quick paced rocker that jumps in with distorted guitars and anthemic vocal deliveries.  If this is what we’re to expect from the label and the band, good things are surely on their way. The band’s album, Repeat, will be out on January 22!

Beautiful Soundscape from Au.Ra

Yep, you read that right.  It’s Au.Ra, not aura, though listening to the music being composed by this duo might lead you to believe otherwise.  As of now, there’s nothing other than this single to really go off, but you can tell by the careful way that the electronic touches are built to establish that dream-like state that the band will soon have a huge following.  I enjoy the way the guitars seem to burst and bloom within the realm of what the band is accomplishing.  Even the hazy vocals continue to pile an extra musical layer atop the song.  Be on the look out for more from these dudes.

New Pop from CornerBoy

Running a site like ours does take a bit of work, so I always check in with my favorite labels to see what they’re working on, and when I went to Dufflecoat Records, I was really excited to see this new CornerBoy release.  The tune has a bit of angular guitar work that plugs you into the primal sensation of good indie pop.  I can’t help but hear the ghost of Robert Pollard in the vocals, which of course makes it all the more special.  You can pick up the new EP, Just Another Sunday Song, from Dufflecoat now, and you’ll be glad you did.

Art Pop from Beachniks

I’ve heard rumors of Beachniks for some time, but I really haven’t been able to come up with too much information on the group.  That is until I stumbled across news that the band would soon be releasing their album In Color on Neotomic Records sometime early in the new year.  I can’t tell you how great their lead single is; it reminds me of the clever interplay that was always present on albums by Comet Gain…yet it still maintains a sense of harmony and artfulness, enabling me to act all smug when I listen to it.  Actually, I don’t even care about acting cool…this is just a great jam.

Scuzzy Slow Burner from Black Forest Fire

Personally, I’m expecting good things from Austin’s Black Forest Fire after delving into their latest single for a bit.  It’s got that magic slow-burn to it, which at first seems to hold a bit of fuzziness to it, but as the song progresses, the ringing guitar seems to give birth to the songs inherent beauty. Singer Karen comes in carefully, but she’s only around for a short bit, providing just a bit of vocals to the heavy mix.  You can find the song and a slew of others on the band’s recently released Transit of Venus, which was just put out by Sedimental Records.

Dreamy Girl Pop from Mini Dresses

I know I haven’t been doing my job when there’s an Austin band that I haven’t come across that completely floors me.  This just happened today with this track from Mini Dresses, a group who’s put out a couple of great singles, including this dreamy little jam.  I love the sound of the bass just quietly bouncing along beneath the vocals, then the cascading guitar that echoes into the song as it fades out.  You can find this gem on a recent 7″ the band released through Manic Pop Records; keep an eye out on the band both here and afar.
