Solid Blood Shares Western Sun + Drops New EP

I had really hoped to get this new EP from Solid Blood up on Friday so you could spend your Bandcamp dollars in the right place, but alas, I got caught up in the State Fair with my kids, so I didn’t quite get to it. Needless to say, the Houston project just dropped the Western Sun EP, and the album’s title track is certainly something that fans of the dream pop/gaze genre are going to swarm towards. On my end, there’s something fairly distinct, as the music at times feels akin to the early boisterousness of Broken Social Scene, though spun through walls of feedback, and simultaneously grasps at something that feels wholly Texas. Pretty special way for you start your week, I must say…courtesy of Who Is Rue Defense.

It’s always strange when I feel like I didn’t do a good job covering new jams, yet I end the week with 20 or more new tunes we’ve tried to get you to crank up…and last week was definitely one of those…feel like I barely dipped my toes in the pond of goodness. Alas, there were some great tunes for you, particularly if you’re into the Australian scene, with new stuff from both Pop Filter and Skegss, not to mention the Oceanic adjacent Jim Nothing. Naked Roommate threw down an end of Summer block party, while Austin’s Cast of Thousands let us say hello to some old friends. Tons of stuff to indulge upon here, so feel free to let me know what I might have missed along the way.

Stream Pop Ray and Lorraine’s, the New Pop Filter LP

We always standby our recommendation of anything that Pop Filter puts together, and today you can stream Ray and Lorraine’s, the group’s new record. I’ve been fortunate enough to have a listen to the record ahead of time, and if I picked a must recommend track, I’d go with “Documentary Footage;” it captures the rawness of a group, while still illustrating the focus they put in the arrangements. Tracks like “Strawberry” and “For Me” offer glimpses of a sort of Aussie brand of French pop, which I’m quite keen on. And, as per usual, with multiple songwriters, the tunes twist and turn, and you’ll turn over a new favorite track with every single listen. Enjoy the full stream below.

Jim Nothing Share Sundown Clown

For all the brightness and left-of-the-dial hooks that the new Jim Nothing record is offering you, it’s nice to know that there’s a little bit of pensive melancholy within for you to soak right up…and this is that song. Working mostly around a light buzz from a harmonium, the group offer up a light strum, building up a melodic lather by way of the group’s charming vocal approach here. While there’s a natural sadness to the vibe, there’s still a little bit of mischievousness that gets sprinkled in by way of the lyrical work here, perhaps picking up the spirit of the inner child we all wish to let out. Another peek at what’s on the horizon with Grey Eyes, Grey Lynn, which drops on October 18th via Meritorio Records.

Stuart Pearce Shares Fuck No I Jangle

Throw in some jangles and let the band bang it out; that seems to be the attitude of Stuart Pearce and their brand new single here. You’ve got huge circling guitars, hitting all the right psychedelic mixed notes, then they suddenly drop in with thumping guitars and these almost sheepish vocals, and maybe even building up a wall of mistrust. That said, they lock into the perfect mixture, melding these pounding rhythms with twisting sunshine guitar licks with stomping vocals that explore a bit of bravado and fun. Step into the sound, and look for a brand new record on Safe Suburban Home next Spring!

Skegss Share High Beaming

As you draw near the weekend, you’re probably looking for a jam that will get throw a smile on your face as you confront the weekend. For me, there aren’t nearly as many bands as there should be playing catching pop rock the way Skegss do, and their new single reinforces that style as it plays a casual rock brand that’s high on a big hook in the chorus, reminding you of all the smiles that have crept upon your face as you sing your favorite song out loud. They continue to crank out fun sing-alongs that embrace the fun that can be had by us all…so don’t forget that as you listen below. Pacific Highway Music will be out via Loma Vista on October 18th.

Corker Release Vital Fall Single

The Ohio scene has really been on fire of late, and you can just throw Corker into the pile of rad acts you should be listening to daily. With their latest, they swing in with these angular riffs that knife their way around machine gun snare rattles. You can hear where folks who love Omni or Ought would be into this tune, as they play with the melding of dissonant sounds and indifferent vocal deliveries, as if they’re encircling their prey, the listener. If you wait one more day, they’ll have the entirety of Hallways of Gray available to stream, courtesy of Feel It Records.

The Smashing Times Share Title Track from Mrs Ladyships and the Cleanerhouse Boys

Despite the lengthy title on the forthcoming LP, the Smashing Times definitely know how to write a tune for those wayward pop fanatics. They’ve got the title track from Mrs. Ladyshops and the Cleanerhouse Boys, and while I think I’ve previously pegged them as the second-coming of Television Personalities, this new jam feels wholly like it was meant to be in the Comet Gain catalogue. There are some special little backing moments on this, like the simple “la la la” that just make your cup overflow with joy, all the while still locked into a bit of rock n’ roll swagger and shake. K Records will drop the record on November 1st, so get your ears ready!

The Submissives Share Friend Named Betty

We’ve been on board with all the hits coming out of Montreal from the Submissives, and for those that love a classic pop sound, you’re going to really dig on this new single. In a sense, it reminds me a bit of the approach Shannon and the Clams have to crafting their ditties, only this go is stripped of the garage tendencies and paved by lighter jangling guitar notes. Those little stabbing lines create a bit of playfulness, begging for the rest of the tune to ease into the pop melodics with a barrage of great harmonies. Live at Value Sound Studios better be on your radar; it drops next Friday!

Class Share Milkman Single

Less than a year ago, Class released the rad record, If You’ve Got Nothing, and they’ve turned it around with another release slated to drop this Friday. Today, before the album drops, we’ve got this jagged bit of garage pop that should garner a listen or seven. There’s definitely a punk nod on this, particularly in the way the vocals almost seem to pogo into the picture, though in a sedate manner; they do burst forth emphatically when you hit the hook and the chorus, as they should. I love the marching drum roll that sets up the chorus, then it hits you with these gang vocals and pounding piano notes; it’s a huge sound with crunchy rock n’ roll flare. Best in Class! Grab A Healthy Alternative this Friday from Feel It Records.
