New Track from Little Red

This track is one of those numbers that you keep playing over and over again, just checking to make sure it’s as magical as it was the first time you listened; ten times later, you still love it.  Little Red hail from Melbourne, but they’ve signed on with True Panther to release their debut, Midnight Remember, on October 25th.  Listening below, it sort of begins with that collage work of say Panda Bear, but then it goes off in a completely different direction, spinning your ears in an entirely different direction. There’s just a hypnotic vibe here that encourages repeated listens, and that’s what makes this a good little listen.

Show Preview: The Horrors @ The Parish (9/21)

Date Wednesday, Sept. 21st
Location The Parish
Doors 800p
Tickets $15 from Frontgate

Over in the UK, the Horrors have been media darlings, crafting some darkly-tinged songs with Primary Colours, then turning in some brighter numbers on this year’s Skying. They’ve had some success in recent years, and this current release only has their name growing in the media spectrum. Still, don’t take our word for it; you’ve got to get out to hear these guys live! Plus, you get the added bonus of seeing them perform at the Parish, which we all know has some of the absolute best sound (if not the best) in Austin.  Sounds like the perfect way to get out of a midweek funk.

New Music from The Apartments

It seems that Australia is intent upon taking back pop music this year, and Chapter Music again is the team behind it all.  They’ve teamed up with Peter Walsh and his group the Apartments to release a new 7″.  It’s a single titled Black Ribbons, with two distinctly different mixes.  The one we have below drifts into the realm of twee-pop, but it does so with such beauty that you can’t help but swoon when you listen to this track.  I think we’ll look back on this in time and be thankful that the band took the time to craft such melodiously enchanting tunes.

Show Preview: Two Gallants @ the Mohawk (9/19)

Date Monday, Sept. 19th
Location Mohawk
Doors 900p
Tickets $12 @ the Door

It’s slightly unfortunate that this show follows the hangover from ACL, as Two Gallants are definitely a great live act, worthy of a measley $12.  But, on the plus side, if you’re looking for some Americana-influenced post-rock, then you might be able to witness a great act without the usual hordes that the band usually gets when they’re in town.  Opening the show will be The Mumlers, so if you didn’t get your fill of rock n’ roll this weekend, then headed over to the Mohawk this evening to make sure you’ve met your quota.

New Music from The Beets

Honestly, I can see why there are some people that haven’t completely gotten into The Beets, but that’s such a shame.  Perhaps the vocals aren’t as pristine as similarly-minded bands, but that doesn’t apply for the great melodies the band has crafted over the last several years.  They’ve just signed on with the increasingly superb Hardly Art, who will be releasing their new LP, Let the Poison Out, on October 24th.  On their last run through, I fell absolutely in love, and you should spend a bit of time with their last record, Stay Home, and it will only get you more excited for this much anticipated release.

Show Preview: Ty Segall @ the Mohawk (9/17)

Date Saturday, Sept 17th
Location Mohawk
Doors 800p
Tickets $10 at the Door

You looking for a show that might not be full of ACL festival goers? Okay, so I can’t promise that, but one of the best shows on Saturday night actually has nothing to do with ACL; it just has to do with good old classic garage rock.  I’ve raved about Ty Segall, and I’ve even posted on the excellent Mikal Cronin, both of whom will be playing at the Mohawk on Saturday night.  If you’re needing your fix of great rock n’ roll, then you need to meet me here for this killer show.  And, you can catch OBN IIIs, the great Austin act while you’re at it.

New Deconstructionist Jam from Co La

Where was this track all summer?  Those dub vibes just fit perfectly to my listening experience for any good summer party, but better late than ever, right? Co La is the project of Matthew Papich, and he’s going to be releasing his full-length, Daydream Repeater, on NNA Tapes on November 15th. It seems like the relaxing vibe here is suitable for warm months, but I have a feeling if he executes this well on the whole record, then it’ll probably get some play around my house no matter what.  Sit back, and let the vibe sink in.

New Jam from The Sweet Ones

Sometimes you find yourself in a little bit of a rut, at least in regards to your listening patterns.  I guess lately I’ve felt like I need something to sort of kick out the jams a bit.  Lucky for me I found this rocking record from The Sweet Ones in my inbox.  Their record is titled Big Mistakes, and you can pick it up now.  It’s a solid little rocking album, filled with sing-a-long barroom brawlers in the vein of garage rock, just a bit filthier. Cleaner production just gives way to the old fashioned good times, which is perfect for your Thursday.

New Track from Dick Diver

It’s going to be a great year for our dear friends over at Chapter Music; they’ve already released Geoffrey O’Connor‘s record, and they’ve got the Twerps new one on the way.  But, more importantly, they’ve got the debut full-length from Dick Diver, yet another great band from Australia waiting to be heard over here in the States. Their record is titled New Start Again, and it will be released October 14th overseas.  On first listen, you’ve got to fall in love with the way the guitar gently trickles in, while a layer of brightness begs to burst forth.  It never does, but you’ll follow the song until its end, waiting.  Even if you have to wait, you’ll play it over again, just to make sure it’s as great a song as you thought it was in the first place.

The Drums – Portamento

Rating: ★★★★½

After much global adoration, and possibly some skepticism, The Drums return to follow up their self-titled debut.  This outing appears to still bubble and brood, if not more so than the band’s first record, which makes Portamento a thoroughly enjoyable listen from start to finish.

If you wanted to see how the group would move into their next phase, then you need to look no further than “Book of Revelation.”  Bouncing bass rhythms control the sign, and while similarities remain vocally, there’s a definite growth in Jonathan Pierce’s voice, sounding much more grounded. And if that didn’t solve your dilemma, then perhaps you can look at “What You Were” to see the band attempting to distance themselves, just a hint, from their past. Pierce’s delivery is vastly different than earlier work, sounding almost indifferent, in an endearing fashion.  Even a horn instrumentation demonstrates the band moving forward.

You’ll still find some excellent numbers worthy of your favorite flailing arms dance move such as the single “Money.” While the lyrical content may not see the band pushing through literary barriers (that’s never been their style), the speedier pace of the drumbeat and Pierce’s vocal shifts during the chorus will allow any listener to realize this band has hooks galore. But, the first half, while catchy and superb in its own right, doesn’t hold much water to the depth of exploration the band made in crafting the second half of Portamento.

With songs like “Lets Go Surfing” on their debut, it seemed the group was intent upon beating you over the head with these incredible hooks.  But, The Drums have switched things up just a bit on this go round, allowing the tracks to brood a little bit, rather than being so forceful.  “If He Likes It Let Him Do It” has a much darker quality than most of the tracks we’ve heard from the group, sounding more like some sort of dark-wave post punk, as opposed to bright surf-ish dance pop. Even the album closer, “How It Ended” seems much more patient in its approach to grabbing listeners, coming off with a much warmer tone than what we were presented with in the band’s early works.  Musical touches are familiar, allowing the fan base to appreciate the olden days, but the best thing is that new listeners will find themselves rewarded by Portamento’s ability to pull you in for a whole song, even album, rather than just a momentary hook.

While I’ll admit that I have some reservations about the group, due entirely to a live performance I witnessed, I can’t escape the fact that the band simply crafts amazing records.  For me, Portamento is a huge step up, and is worthy of ten times the repeated listens in comparison to the first release from The Drums.  It’s got hints of everything any modern listener needs: dance, bounce, brooding, atmospherics.  You really can’t go wrong spending your time listening to this entire album again and again.
