There was so much new music dropping last week that it was hard to keep track of it all, but I think with 22 new songs out there, we managed to do our part. Greg Mendez was a big winner, with a brand new EP we loved; I also definitely didn’t turn away from the fresh Innocence Mission, which maybe one of my favorite they’ve ever concocted. We had a premiere of a new Sunnsetter tune, and also hit up the latest from The Great Divides, so we’re kind of all over the place musically, making this playlist a journey of sorts. Fridays are always great days to just settle into your chair, couch, bed, whathaveyou, then just escape the world for a few hours. What better way than to stream some brand new music that’s dropped into the world? There’s a bunch of stuff out today, but I sort of handpicked what I’ve been enjoying and listening to the most, hoping you can latch onto a bit of that as well.

Club 8 Share All I Know

Throughout the string of stellar singles this season Club 8 have relied upon their electronic skillset to pump out hooks galore, but on their latest bop, the group are employing a more subtle piece, allowing the vocals to control the tune’s narrative. You’ll find moments in this track where they feel as if they’re nearing old school Camera Obscura methodology, operating with that high melody, with the backbeat just giving the song a bit of life and springiness. They always know how to come in at just the right time, bringing all the pieces together and leaving us with another enjoyable pop adventure.

Bleak Streak Share Dark + Drop S/T LP

Swedish outfit Bleak Streak weren’t on my radar until this track came our way, and now I’m devouring their new S/T LP. Every time I listen through the single we’re sharing below, it reminds me of a ramshackle version of Galaxie 500; the jangling pop dreaminess works throughout, though you’d likely feel as if the band over-indulged in caffeine, making some of the noisier parts pop a bit more instead of the warming to the melodic center. You’ll still find that there’s this cheerful sentiment that pervades the entirety of the tune, encouraging you to also dive into the band’s new record today!

Cali Bellow Shares Energizer (They Bring Me Flowers)

Wanted to start the day off with this powerful new jam from Cali Bellow; as it feels like this fuzzy ripper that’s brimming with positivity, and we need that shit on a Friday. In a sense, it reminds me of that era of pop music that burst through the scenes when Animal Collective dabbled in pop, but there’s so much to enjoy, like the rough edges that sound like your speakers have officially been blown out (I hope that’s not the case!). The overlapping vocals create this dreamy hook that adds sentiment to this noise pop concoction. Keep a lookout for Ciao Bella, the new LP that drops next Friday via Fiadh Productions.

New Single from The Great Divides

You may have your day filled with your go-to jams and your playlist is set, but if you do anything for your own well-being, you must listen and include this new track from the Great Divides. Set upon a fairly simple musical background, the vocals enter with that indifferent swagger that’s made Melbourne one of our favorite musical scenes over the last few decades. Those moments are perfectly, letting the rhythm and the pulsating keyboard notes accent the track, but the chorus is something wholly different. The vocals fall into an accompanying duet, buoyed by sharper strings and a swelling of grand pop that simply sweeps you away; I live for these sort of pop moments, and store them in my brain for rainy days. The group will release (I’m Sure) on November 15th via Spoilsport Records.

The Green Child Release A Long Beautiful Flowing Cape

On the first single from the Look Familiar, the new LP from the Green Child, the track felt logical; it felt like a progression from their previous release. But, we seem them taking a horizontal step, playing with nuanced electronics and their role in creating negative space as a musical background. Here, they’ve evaded their rolling pop synthetics, instead choosing to work on an almost anti-pop realm. Don’t get me wrong, there’s still some crystalline synth notes that build the space, but Raven seems to be kind of tip-toeing around tradition, sliding in and out of that negative space, with electro beats fluttering behind. Look Familiar is out on November 15th via Upset the Rhythm/Hobbies Galore.

Lofi Legs Share Chain Video

I’ve only just gotten hold of this new track from Lofi Legs, and already, I can’t stop pressing play, as it feels like the perfect intersection of everything I’ve been rocking to lately. There’s a bit of wayward pop akin to TV Personalities, but there’s also a tightness, bringing back some almost Beatles-esque pop moments to the front. All that, but it also doesn’t stray away from noise, so you get all of your bits and pieces of the great indie rock sounds in one little pop gem. The San Fran project will drop Bag of Spells on October 25th, just in time to haunt our listening rotation!

World Brain Offer Ville Fleurie

German outfit World Brain recently caught my attention with their “Minute Papillon” single, but now there’s another urban pop tune to captivate you early this morning. Put yourself in the mindset of a traveler or urbanite walking through the city, images and buildings flash by, like the soft beats that provide you with the tempo for your walk. But, you turn a corner and your face lights up, just as you see a grand field or park, offering up a cheerful vision that matches the twist in the track. Those of you willing to indulge in some jazz-inflected pop, well, you’re not going to find too many folks doing it better. Open Source will be out on November 1st.

Innocence Mission Share Midwinter Swimmers

One of the great things about the Innocence Mission is that there’s probably never a bad time for a new single to sprout up; they could have just dropped some random B-side from years past and I’d be circling back to play it over and over again. Luckily, this tune comes with the LP just a few weeks away, and I can’t help but be swept away. Karen’s voice, as per usual, draws me deep within the song’s depth; it’s whimsical magic captivates consistently. But, this song excels in its details. There are moments when the song borders on getting noisy, adding just enough to texture to bulk up the tune, though never overbearingly so. Then, twice, the song offers up this forlorn guitar line that sucks me in like a tractor beam; your first notice is at the 1:04 mark, and I live for that moment every time I press play. Midwinter Swimmers arrives on Novemer 29th via Therese Records/Bella Union.
