Night Court Drop Mistakes Become You

One thing that gets me going on a Monday is a huge hook and a whole lot of flare, just like the newest single from Vancouver’s Night Court. They don’t have a lot of time here, so they just right into the fray, banging out those angular punk riffs and snapping hits on the drum; they smash it down perfectly when they hit the chorus, emphatically entering a classic breakdown, albeit one with that has to work frantically so they can get right back at banging away at the hooks. Those vocals too, singing in unison, just bring out so much incredible energy, it’s going to be hard not to find yourself enjoying what’s in store. Shit Machine will be out on November 1st via Recess Records.

Wilder Thing Shares Too Much TV Single

The waters in Maine seem to be continuously flowing with artistic expression; I’ve stumbled upon a ton of acts from the state over the last few years that have just blown my mind, like Wilder Thing. This project feels like some sort of blasphemous concoction of indie rock influences that would appeal to fans of bands in the vein of Shellac. You’ll get seance style spoken-word met with firing guitar lines that shoot off into the horizon; there feels like there’s some possessive force (the TV?) controlling the narrator, adding this fascinating tension to the build and explosion. I Have My Mother’s Eyes and I’m Not Giving Them Back is out on October 18th via Repeating Cloud.

Last Week’s Jams (9.3 – 9.6)

Just because it was a short week doesn’t mean we couldn’t cover a whole lot of brand new music, especially since there were some unexpected returns that we didn’t know were coming, like new jams from The Green Child and The Innocence Mission. More recent favorites dropped some solid tracks for us, so check in with the latest from Best Bets, Naked Roommate and Mo Dotti. But, don’t just think it was all bangers, with the softer side coming through via Adrian Marner and Tom Emlyn. And, be sure to check in with that new Forceghost, who I’d like to apologize to for misspelling the name of their Recycled Hearts release; sorry my friends! Just press play and enjoy!

Best Bets Drop Heaven Video

The Hollow Husk of Feeling can’t get here soon enough, but with the new Best Bets records still a few weeks away, they’ve offered up one more sneak peek into one of my most anticipated LPs of the Fall. The energy of this tune totally fits where I’m at this afternoon, kicking out some high-octane power-pop while the vocals are being stretched to the max. Again, not sure of the album as a whole, but it feels like they’re touching the highest peaks of the genre, flirting with edges of punk while adhering to a sensible melodic approach you can’t ignore. Make sure you grab a copy from Meritorio Records before the release date on September 27th.

Mt Misery Share Waking Up Single

There’s not a whole lot better in this world than a cool late Summer breeze blowing through with a new Mt. Misery tune on the winds. After popping back in last month with a new single, they’re at it again, sneaking in a really melodic jangler that opens the door to the Fall season. Something about their craft this go-round feels so light and refreshing, sort of a cleanse of the past months. And, like all great things, this one comes with the news that there’s a new LP just around the corner, offering up promising pop sounds that will wrap up our year.

Adrian Marner Shares Dreamer Single

Those of you in search of a new singer to break your heart should have your focus on Adrian Marner and his forthcoming Remember Yourself LP. Whenever we get a new single, we run it, as we’re completely fascinated by the striking fragility that brings you within his songwriting. This go round, a light percussive piece adds just a hint of texture and movement, allowing the fragility of Marner’s voice to hang on the highest notes, soaring right to your hearts. Adrian’s one of those songwriters who won’t let you go once he’s got his hooks in you, so keep an eye out for the new LP, out November 1st via Zerowell Records.

Hilken Mancini Band Drop New Single

The old pages of 90s rock n’ roll industry are littered with Hilken Mancini’s name, but she hasn’t slowed down one bit, putting her energy into building music programs and rock n’ roll workout programs…though today we’re here to talk about the Hilken Mancini Band. The band are announcing their new self-titled record for Girlsville Records, offering up this classic rock n’ roll ripper that should guarantee you’ve got your eyes on the prize come this October. When listening there’s clearly the same knack for writing huge hooks that brought Hilken’s name fame early on; she builds this tune with a driving alt-rock guitar line, then turns around and delivers a delicious power hook in the chorus. Plus, there still feels like there’s a whole lot of “take on the world” attitude, reminding us all just how much Hilken brings to the musical world. Be sure to check out Hilken Mancini Band when it drops on October 25th via Girlsville Records.

Wolfschmidt Share Cosmic Joke

If like me, you’re waking out of a sleepy slumber, by all means, just turn this Wolfschmidt tune to let you sort of slink into Friday. In contrast to their last energetic banger, this tune sort of lets you slide your pants on one leg at a time, careful to build up that energy before unleashing a wall of noise, like an alarm clock urging you to wake. Building and building, the Swedish outfit are all about the rising action, pushing the listener to the climactic moment when the band breaks it all down and pushes for sonic exploration. This is the final listen before their EP drops in full today!

Spiral XP Share Sinner Single

Spiral XP has been on our radar since dropping their It’s Been a While EP, though we might suggest checking in on their split with TV Star too. Alas, all that to say we’re really excited for the forthcoming full-length, I Wish I Was a Rat, with another single dropping to get you on board today. This is a steady crunch rocker, something you’d expect from folks living up in the Pacific Northwest, though they’re certainly taking care to instill some of the noisier elements in their sound. There are elements of this jam that feel like a march, like a step in line up the mountain, rejoicing in walls of screaming guitars when you reach the peak. I Wish I Was a Rat is out on October 18th via Danger Collective.

Pinhead Gunpowder Return with UNT

The old punk in me is really excited about a new Pinhead Gunpowder album, which just got announced. Surely you’ll recognize the vocals at the front of this mix, and hopefully you appreciate the ethos they’re punching out. They don’t have an agenda and they’ve made plenty of money over the years, so they’re here just to drop fiery pop-punk hits so hard you’ll have no choice but to sing super loud at the top of your lungs. If there’s one thing I know from listening to the band for nearly 3 decades, it’s that you’re going to have a whole lot of fun cranking this one up to 11. They’ll drop UNT on October 18th via 1-2-3-4 Go Records.
