Pop Filter Release Fragile Single

A month or so ago, our friends down in Melbourne, Pop Filter, tossed a new track our way, with a slight hint that more would be on the way…and thus here we are. This new single offers a glimpse into the songwriting process of the group, having been playing together for nearly two decades, they’re carefree and driven by the joy of one another’s company, leading to a diverse collection of tunes. You’ll hear a stabbing bit of synth work running through this tune, punctuating the bob and weave of the rhythm section that certainly propels the tune. As you settle into the song being a sort of pop jam, they open up into a rolling rock moment with Lachlan punctuating the track with a heavy drum roll and thumping burst of vocals. They continue to push themselves, and in that, their new record Ray and Lorraine should be something special, coming out on October 4th.

Nap Eyes Announce The Neon Gate

We’ve heard (and been charmed) from a lot of the new Nap Eyes album, as they’ve been steadily putting singles out into the ether, but today they bring the official announcement of The Neon Gate. Nigel Chapman’s voice is like a light and I’m some moth, drawing me towards it again and again. But, while his gifted lyricism and pleasing voice are a big draw, I love the production on this new single, a reminder that orchestral folk pop doesn’t have to sound cliche. Light synths open the song, almost like a heavenly string arrangement, and then comes the strum, whistling through your ear like the breeze across a prairie grass. Then a subtle sampled beat comes into play as another guitar line begins to work in contrast, and everything just builds and builds. BUT! That build isn’t obvious, it’s light and careful not to pop its head out, charming from just behind Chapman’s voice. What a wonderful tune, and the promise that The Neon Gate is going to be super special; it drops October 18th via Paradise of Bachelors.

New Single from Kate Bollinger

Dammit Kate Bollinger, this is a bop! This new single is instantly spirited, working with a light little strum that meets up with a peppy bit of snare and cymbal to kick the springiness of the song right into your eardrums. Then Bollinger’s voice is like a whispering angel, so soft and feathered, caressing the inner ear canal as it slides right into your daily listening rotation. Using the monosyllabic “las” to further the melodic trance she’s putting you in, you might find yourself trapped in a whirlpool of joy where you won’t want to swim out. You’ll be smiling all the way to wherever you go if you grab Songs From a Thousand Frames of Mind, out September 27th via Ghostly International.

Fun Rocker from Altre di B

Strangely, I don’t get a ton of music coming my way from Italy, but this morning as I was prepping my weekly running playlist (look for a less fat Nathan this Fall!) I got caught up in this Altre di B tune. For a brief instant, they set it up with vocals and grungy guitars, then they jump in with furious drums running amok while the guitars do the same, one heavy and the other sharp and dancing throughout. This sets up the vocals perfectly, as they seem to dance their way right into the track, similarly fashioned after the lead guitar note, boogieing between the lines here. An energetic rocker that works best at really high volumes. You’ll find this on their new Zapping EP.

Porridge Radio Return with Sick of the Blues

Porridge Radio is one of those bands I really enjoy, but admittedly take for granted. They seem to slip in between the cracks of the 100+ emails I get daily, though I love this new march they’ve just dropped. Secretly Canadian just announced they’ll be releasing Clouds In the Sky They Will Always Be There for Me today, with this steady stomp opening the album’s cycle. The refrain “I’m sick of the blues” is the sort of meditative statement that keeps returning throughout the lyrics, detailing a new self-confidence. Everything musically seems to be lifting the song like some indie rock cheer pyramid, eventually erupting when the song hits near the end, embracing a full-throttle rock n’ roll burst that takes the song to new heights. The new LP drops on October 18th.

Barcode Angels Share Renaissance Single

After releasing their debut, Angels Forever, Barcode Angels got right back to work on new music, some of which I’m happy to kick off for you today. Crips cymbals and throbbing bass grooves drive the song from the instant you press play, with the lyrical content coming in frantically, almost as if they’re chasing down the beat. The verses are the perfect, as the bits in between are where the melodic center of the song sweetens the pot, particularly when you get to the back half of the tune where backing vocals intertwine in this shimmering morning pop jam. Mint Field Share Sensibilidad Dormida

You had to know that if Mint Field tossed out another single it was going to get covered over here, as I’ve certainly been in the band’s corner, since their early days. Aprender A Ser was great, and with the extended version we’re getting a glimpse at some of the music that’s been burrowing inside the band’s heads. This tune is perfect at blending the old and new, in regards to the band’s history; it offers up this cavernous dream-state, ushering you into the depths of the earth, then turning and opening up with these burning bits of guitar noise that add primal layer to the band’s style. It all tip-toes to a quite drip through your speakers, the last remaining drop echoing as the abrupt end comes your way. Aprender A Ser: The Extended Version is out August 30th via Felte Records.

Share Bring Out Another Single

It’s Monday, and you need vibes, and this new Share single definitely has a solid vibe groove to lift you into the rest of the week. While the backbone of the song is this meandering little folk stream, the vocals that come in the verse hang with just a bit of a rough edge, scratching at the edges of the day and dragging us out our doldrums. When that chorus hits, it gets contrasted, as the guitar lines bend waywardly and the melodic nature of the vocals just pop a little ray of sunshine into your bedroom…and the second chorus gets a nice fuzzy boost to help the song cruise into a slightly heavier territory that surely gets under your skin. Share will released Have One on August 9th via Forged Artifacts.

Queen Serene Share Glowing Single

This new track from Queen Serene just recently dropped, and seeing as I caught the band last night for the single release, wanted to be sure to give it some love on the site. What I love is that the raw energy of the tune translates well to the recorded version, as part of the tune feels like a fiery rock piece and the other half is this motorik psychedelia that courses along the Autobahn, and when they stop to let you breathe, the growling guitars bite at your ears, shredding your speakers as the tune pounds to an emphatic close.

Sleeper’s Bell Share Road Song

Amidst a lot of the pop and rock coverage I’ve got going on today, I wanted to lighten it up with this really delicious tune from folk-ish outfit, Sleeper’s Bell. This recording represents a full band presentation of the Chicago outfit, the primary vessel for the songwriting of Blaine Teppema and Evan Green. You can hear the intricate playing style in the mix, but the accents lift this beyond a mere fireside strum. The percussion taps playfully, snapping the song to life, which goes further when the buzz of the saxophone builds an added textural layer that thickens the plot throughout. Plus, you can’t go wrong when you’re lifting a line from Townes (“Being born is going blind”), can you? Check it out courtesy of Angel Tapes.
