Clearly spacing out and drifting into the ocean waters is heavily on my brain at the moment, thus why finding this tune from World Brain was perfect. It felt like this typical ambient piece, which I quite liked as the vibe was right in line with mine. But, then the vocals crept into the picture, and the keys stroked a higher pitch, reminding me of Air in a sense, pulling more jazz and lounge influences into the fold; it’s perfectly fitting for sitting around the pool with a nice chilly beverage in your hand. Enjoy letting this wash over you.

Natural Palace Shares HDIF Single

Sitting in my living room, with a planned vacation on tomorrow’s horizon, so I’m totally in vibe mode, ready to just detox from the computer for a minute or three, which is why I love this new Natural Palace tune. I love a good electronic number that’s all about the way it uses this sort of musical scaffolding; the tinkering beat that begins gets an added drum piece, then a skittering electronic noise followed by this haunting echo of a vocal at 30 minutes, allowing more vocal overlapping that thickens the dance waters before a heavier groove drops into flip the track and spin it from club spiritual into club banger. You’ll hear this tune on the group’s new LP, Reeling, dropping on September 20th via Sound as Language.

Sad Eyed Beatniks Share It Makes the Scene Single

Figured we should start off your midweek morning with a new Sad Eyed Beatniks single, as if there were any other way. The majesty of the latest single from Kevin Lin is certainly related to the vibe; I keep hearing bits of GBV mixed with the Velvet Underground, but there’s also something that feels wholly singular, which is what makes Kevin Linn’s songwriting so special. Sure, you can take the light jangles and layers of distortion and lump the work in with a number of other acts, though his vocal drawl creates this friendliness that sinks your heart. It’s nice to hear how the sounds on Ten Brocades are coming across as ‘numerous and varied’ as we draw near the July 12th release date, courtesy of Meritorio Records.

Required Red Sleeping Beauty Listening

Every day at the beginning of each month, you’re asked (and encouraged) to indulge in the new single from Swedes Red Sleeping Beauty; they continue to crank out a song a month for all you pop aficionados. This one’s all sugar, instantly intoxicating inclined listeners with the vibrant melody that opens into bright harmonizing as the whole team joins in; there’s a brief moment when it almost feels like they’re channeling early New Pornographers with Neko singing…it has that sort of charm to it. It’s brief and shiny, like a new toy that you’ll want to wear out in a matter of days…but rest assured they’ll (and we’ll!) be back to report on it in August!

Don Giovanni Signs Mechanical Canine

Seeing as we dropped a review of the ever-emo band Say Anything, it only makes sense that we check in on Philly’s emo-punk scene with some love for Mechanical Canine. Today, the group announce they’ve signed with Don Giovanni Records, offering up a spirit pop punk number that warrants a cranked up stereo. If you get it loud enough, you likely will feel some familiar vibes going through this, as the band seem to be channeling a more emo version of “Kids in America,” though I can’t tell if they’re coming at it from the Muffs or Kim Wilde side here. Still, the chorus and the drum fills in that section add some rocking punch that supersedes any like-mindedness…and its still a fun as hell tune to crank up loud. Keep any eye out for their new LP, To My Chagrin!

Nightshift Share Sure Look

Nightshift‘s forthcoming Homosapien record is definitely one of two hotly anticipated LPs coming from the Trouble in Mind stable, and today we get another single that hurtles us into the dense pop realm these Glaswegians have built. This tune lurks in a cavernous pop space, with the discordant guitar sounds seeping down the walls while the drum work controls the pacing and the vocals. Eothen Stearn is allowed to work playfully through the verses while the drums sit back, but when they rush, it hurtles the track forward, forcing Stearn to keep pace too, reminiscent of some of the great pop pieces Love is All put together. Homosapien drops on July 26th!

Dress Warm Release Backyard Single

We’ve been covering Dress Warm for a few year’s now, watching as the Austin trio found their musical footing. With their latest tune, you get this feeling that they’re finally settling into their skin. There’s this fragility that remains, particularly in the vocals, crafting this earnestness that’s capable of bewildering listeners. At the moment, I’m enjoying the way they’ve buoyed the sound, adding in textural strokes that move the song beyond just mere songwriter craft, then continue to grow that power into the track as it moves towards its close. Stoked to see what they’re working on, as this sounds like some of their strongest vibes.

Shady Cove Share Passenger

A few weeks back, I hit upon Portland’s Shady Cove, throwing a little Wilson-Phillips nod their way. But, on their latest single, they get a little more pensive, allowing the craft of the song itself to trickle a bit more. It circles about with this subtle beat in the distance, sinking behind the softened tones of the vocals, with all of it being sprinkled with careful atmospheric strokes from time to time. After the two minute mark, the tune begins to blossom a bit more, elevating their tune into something that takes on a more spiritual nature as the atmosphere and the pace both seem to expand. If you’re into it, the song appears on the Part II LP, which drops on August 30th.

Last Week’s Jams (6.24 – 6.28)

For some reason, I felt like last week was kind of a slow-burn, but then when putting all the tracks we mentioned together, was stoked to see we had a solid amount for you to enjoy today. Personally, getting to celebrate new music from Feeling Figures and Being Dead feels like the world gets a win. But, there were also some great LP releases from the likes of Laughing and My Best Unbeaten Brother, amongst others. Totally excited to hear news of another endeavor from Mexico’s Mint Field, not to mention we got another sneak peek at what’s coming from the next Bad Moves LP, which of course has us stoked.
