The Ekphrastics Share Make Your Own Snowboard

If music runs through your veins, you can’t stay away for long…which is why the old ghost called to Frank Boscoe (Vehicle Flips); he picked up and then began anew with The Ekphrastics…and now they’ve got a new LP coming your way. Our first listen to the title track, almost seems like it’s the missing link between indiepop and modern americana sounds. I was drawn towards the rolling chug of those guitar lines, wrapping themselves around each little melodic vocal line. The narrative nature is a grand life lesson too, offering up themes of doing your very best, despite expected outcomes. Honestly, you’ll find a great bit of familiarity luring throughout, and if you keep turning over musical stones, you’ll just reveal more of those special moments hidden beneath the surface. The band release Make Your Own Snowboard on August 16th via Harriet Records.

Pleased to Meet You: Rulitos

Daniel Sanchez reached out to me a bit ago concerning his new project, Rulitos. He described it as sort of an imaginary AirBnB where the ghosts of Nick Drake and Elliott Smith might be lounging and listening to records by Aphex Twin or Nils Frahm. For me, that’s a perfect description, as the four tracks on EP 1 weave back and forth between English and Spanish, utilizing the softness in Sanchez’s voice to unify the mixture between beats and strum of the guitar. On the single below, just listen as the song moves into more ambient territory, with Daniel celebrating all his influences in a tight little 3 minute package. You can celebrate the release of Rulitos’ EP 1 if you’re in Austin by stopping by Vaquero Taquero for a release show with Fuvk, Sprig and Cloud Companion. Otherwise, the EP is out via Flyer Club on June 28th!

CBVB Shares Video for Two Good Ears

I’ve clearly been obsessing with the work of CBVB, or Craig Benedict Valentine Badynee over the last few months, and today, he’s given us permission to fawn even more with a lyric video to accompany the B-Side track, “Two Good Ears.” As is always the case with CBVB work, the inspiration comes from many corners; you can hear obscure jazz influences from the 70s to disco Iggy Pop nods…and all with the influence of Craig reflecting upon consoling his daughter in regards to an unfaithful partner whilst realizing he, too, had committed similar acts. For me, I was drawn to his half-cocked croon, almost like a tongue-in-cheek lounge singer that immediately reminds me of Jarvis Cocker, particularly in his solo work. Enjoy more from CBVB!

Fast Execution Announces Menses Music

This seems like the Summer of Dandy Boy Records, having already dropped new music from Yea-Ming and Kelley Stoltz, they now move forward with a new release from Fast Execution. The return of fuzzy rock continues, but singer Alex Velasquez would love for it to be less of a boy’s club, so she’s trimmed it of its fat and offers up this melodic brand that’s short and to the point. Drums hang in the background adding a little bulk to the tune, though the energetic rush of hooks need little else to get stuck inside your head. Menses Music will be released on August 8th!

Dutch Interior Sign with Fat Possum

Dutch Interior is a new-to-me act, and I’m definitely interested to hear where there music will go now that they’ve signed with Fat Possum and dropped a new single to a larger audience. Initially, the atmospheric build of the song was what took me; it’s got the perfect balance of escapism meets hurtling noise. When the vocals enter, they operate in this mundane manner, sort of settling the track or even just letting the listener breathe before the song unfurls into this bounding bit of post rock glory. You can crank it up, and honestly, you might not even need the lyrics, as the movement and power are that moving…so be on the lookout for. more from this LA act. Also…shout out to Joan Miro.

Obligatory Softies Post

It’s already all over the Internet, but the Softies are back! They’ve brought out their magical charms that have made them one of the most revered indiepop acts. Just watching this video, seeing the interplay between Jen and Rose brings back all the feelings you missed over the last 20 plus years…unless you grabbed that split Tony Molina cassette! We don’t even need to wax poetically here, as there’s not much more to say that hasn’t been said about the duo. That said, I’m super happy to hear new stuff, and look forward to grabbing a copy of The Bed I Made, out in August via Father/Daughter Records.

Crack Cloud Share the Medium

It’s early on Tuesday, and I definitely needed something to get me out of bed. The familiarity of Crack Cloud‘s latest single was definitely something that grabbed my interest, pulling the sheets off and reaching for my laptop. At first, it feels a bit like a young act mocking the Sex Pistols, but when you get in deeper you’ll hear a bit more polish, almost like they’ve repackaged the sound to bring bigger hooks. They reveal this further when they strip it all back in the middle, feeding a dreamy pop vocal performance right in the middle of the angst…and like the video’s balloon suggest…the song ends up being all pop, but in a refreshing manner. They release Red Mile on July 26th via Jagjaguwar.

7ebra Shares Daybreak

Not too long ago, 7ebra returned with the masterfully infectious “Normal Song,” their first new music since releasing Bird Hour; it had this incredible missing link between modern pop and Broadcast. Today, we get the other track from that 7″, with this newer track offering up a brew of slow-burning organ notes and drifting vocal melodies. It’s clear that the two have continued building their vocal interplay, which shines on this one, letting guitar notes wrap around each little note, with a faint heartbeat working as the main beat. You’ll get to hear this song on repeat if you grab a copy of the new Normal Song/Daybreak 7″, out July 5th via PNKSLM.

Time Stalkers Release Isabelle Video

Not everyone works on the same album cycle, especially if you’re a 9 piece group like Time Stalkers. This last week, a video emerged for their slow-churning pop ballad “Isabelle;” you might recognize the tune from their 2020 self-titled LP, thus giving me another chance to celebrate the band’s work. The track’s sells a pretty heart-wrenching vibe, pulling at you as the guitars bend and the strings sink you…thus the video needs the same sentiment. So, we’re presented with the story of a bird who has just been dumped, thus turning to the Time Stalkers LP for consoling; it’s a charming presentation of heartbreak, if that exists. Lunar Vacation Announce New LP + Share Set the Stage

The musical world can sometimes be serendipitous. Just last week, I was talking with a friend from Australia who was looking for bands to tour with in the fall; they were going through Georgia, so I suggested Lunar Vacation, then myself traveled down an LV wormhole. Wake up today, brand new Lunar Vacation video on the Internet, with an announcement of a fresh LP for our friends over at Keeled Scales. This beautifully choreographed video directed by Finn Wolfhard accompanies the band’s latest single, and man, this is the sort of set-up that builds anticipation of a new record…as if they really needed an extra dose. Everything Matters, Everything’s Fire will be out September 13th.
