The more I spend time with Teenage Halloween, the more I see them as the American answer to Spook School, albeit with a little more of a growl. They’re musical work takes a similar tone, rolling through with these energetic riffs filled with insane hooks that keep you thirsting for more and more. Sure, you’re thinking bands like this are a dime a dozen, but not every band is hitting at such topics the one here, lightheartedly tackling putting out love into the world as a way to overcome your own mental health demons. Plus, not only is it serious hooks and lyrical content, but there’s just enough of an edge to make old punk rock dads keep their cool. Till You Return is out today via Don Giovanni.

The Problem with Kids Today Share Catchy New Single

Not entirely sure how I feel about the band name, as its a bit of a mouthful, but I’m totally enjoying the latest single coming from the Problem with Kids Today. There’s this spring bounce to the tune, sort of a mixture between indiepop vibes and power pop, which is definitely something in the dadpunk wheelhouse over here. You can feel a bit of grit in teeth of the lyrics, particularly as the track rolls forward pushing the pop aspect simultaneously. This is what I love about rock n’ roll; it can be dangerously energetic and sugary sweet at the same time. The group are dropping Born to Rock next February.

Office Dog Drop Gleam Single

I’ll be completely honest here…I almost skipped over Office Dog‘s new single, entirely based on my judgment of the band’s name. But, a quick glance at the bio mentioned New Zealand, and then Kane Strang, who was all the rage on this site and others a few years back; this is his new, more collaborative effort. There are still some incredible hooks in the tune, as I gravitated towards the latter half’s stomping close, however, there’s a darkness to this album, written during a period of turmoil in Strang’s life; you can get some of that imagery from the video version below, if you put all those pieces together. Spiel will be released in January via New West, with Flying Nun already releasing it in Australia.

The Wind Ups Announce Happy Like This

Likely going to make folks irate here, but if you listen to the new tune from The Wind Ups, you get the feeling that the song’s got some lineage with The Ramones. For me, its not just the unabashed banging from start to finish, though I love that being in there. There’s just a bunch of playful stuff they’re including, like simplistic lyrics that play upon single syllables to deliver hooks; they’ve also got handclaps, ramping up the childlike joy of early punk vibes. This song will be on the group’s Happy Like This LP, which drops next week via Mt. St. Mtn.

New Electronic Jam from Auragraph

I don’t know whether it happens to just be one of the few electronic artists whose emails make it my way, or whether it’s Auragraph channeling some of the beats from my childhood, but whatever the case, I’m always enjoying the stuff he’s putting out. There’s a new single out there that definitely harkens to some of the pop hits of my 80s days, getting tapes at the grocery store; it is a bit different as he’s using it to create soundscapes and atmosphere, as opposed as serving as the backbone to pop hooks. That said, there’s still that pulsing rhythm and magical bounce that just gives your day the perfect kickstart. Plus, there’s a little foggy atmosphere hovering in spots, in case you want to call it electro-dream. New Standard drops on November 17th via Dais Records.

Aural Air Share Night by Night

To be honest, I don’t know too much about Dublin’s Aural Air, other than that I was really taken aback by the newest single from the Irish project. I needed something that musically spoke to pastoral tendencies, but with a vocal that floated high upon the clouds. I love the way the simplistic drum work just seems to roll around, just as the vocal notes seem to tumble from high right into your earholes. You could hear this track being really perfect with noisy walls swirling around it, but I’m grateful that you get to sit back and just rest in its presence for a bit, letting your mind find that peace you’ve been seeking. There’s a new EP titled Imagined Pleasures scheduled to drop before this year’s up, so if you’re into it, be on the lookout.

Font Share Fresh Single (Levitation Artist)

Everyone in Austin has been high upon Font‘s performances the last few years, and it feels like they’re just destined to break into the greater realm of music lovers. I’ve only managed to catch them a couple of times, and have always left impressed. They just released a rad new single, and honestly, from their most recent single last year to this one, it feels sort of like they’re making the same trajectory as Liars did. While there’s still a magnetic punk ethos, you can certainly hear the groove and the electronic element pouring into this new jam. I mean, that rolling pulse should have you bobbing your head incessantly as the vocals move from punctuated to chaotic; it’s a whirlwind, pulled tightly together by a group ready to push themselves. Turn it all the way up.

Big Mess Share Walk All Over Me

Out there, somewhere in the rock n’ roll landscape is a musical experience somewhere between Jay Reatard and the Exploding Hearts; I think that place is where Big Mess gathered all their energy for this new single. The track has the tenacity and pulse of something Jay might have done, but it’s fully embracing the anthemic bits of pop-punk enthusiasts. It’s a rush of energy, running on the backs of furiously pounding drums, and they run you right through to the hook of “you could walk all over me.” Feels like this would be a great song for a sing-along with your best mates; you’ll find this tune on the group’s new Cleaning Up With LP, out on November 17th.

Spllit Drop Bevy Stew Single

You’ve absolutely got to get in on SPLLIT! In an odd way they remind me of the early Omni stuff, messing with time and fluidity within their songwriting, always keeping you on your toes as they move back and forth. They have this way of weaving their melodic charms into the tune that feel almost apathetic, like they’re apologetically providing you with a little bit of an earworm, just to get that hook under your skin. Just before the 2.5 minute mark, the song hits a glitch and slows to a thick churn, with chords being walked up and down through your speakers. Totally in love with the stuff popping up from Infinite Hatch; it’s out on October 27th via Feel It Records.

Say Sue Me Drop 4 AM Single, Hit the US

Long have I championed Say Sue Me, and as they prepare to board for the U.S., the band have opted to drop a fresh single, courtesy of their label, Damnably. While I adored the band’s frantic guitar work on early tunes like “Old Town,” they’ve showed a trend towards a softer feel with later releases, allowing the melody to sort of levitate, hoping to find its home in your brain. There’s a fuzzy guitar underlying the track too, just giving off this wayward bit of rock n’ roll, wistfully drifting in and out, and I absolutely love that sound. They’ll have a quick North American jaunt starting in NYC on 11/13, and hitting Austin on 11/16, so be sure to be one of those in attendance, as they’re visits are hard to come by!
