Amelia Coburn Shares Peek at Debut LP

There’s been a bit of buzz overseas about Amelia Coburn, especially when Bill Ryder-Jones signed on to work with Amelia for her debut LP. Today, we get this great bit of dramatic pop that puts Coburn’s gifts on full-display. There’s this playfulness to the video version of the tune, something hinting at the magical notions that are toyed with in the lyrical content. Musically, this is pop of another era, though fittingly, right at home as everything old becomes news. Sweeping strings and bounding bits of old-time keys give the track proper movement as the tune pushes the vocals high into the mix. A nice introduction; we should know more about the new LP as the new year dawns.

Witching Waves Share The Valley Video

I absolutely love the contrast in the new single from Witching Waves; it sets up this huge emotional impact in the chorus that I makes nerds like me swoon. When the track opens, it’s all discordant, angular riffs and thumping drums; Emma’s vocals are shouted sharply, matching her pounding of the drums. But, a slight warming of the guitars opens the chorus to a softer vocal performance, aided by a layering of backing vocals kicking in just the right amount of melody to really polish off the hook. And, just as you’re charmed, they flip it back and go right on pounding and shredding away, in the best way possible! They release Streams and Waterways on December 1st via Specialist Subject Records.

Felt like I was going down a timid little path this morning, so was actively seeking out a little bit of rock n’ roll, which is how I stumbled onto Big Cry Country and their Living Conditions EP. From the instant you turn the EP on, you get nothing but a ripping tenacity, with these sharp rips and biting vocals that show off a sheer attitude; a come-and-take-it rock n’ rip vibe for sure. But, just because they’re pounding out on those drums and riffing doesn’t mean you’re not going to find a nice little tasty treat to consume inside; there’s plenty of melody and shit-ton of hooks to wrap your ears around, so you’ve just got to turn it up loud and let yourself have a bit of fun!

Daily Worker Share Radio Gurls Video

If you’re a great songwriter, you don’t generally need a lot of gimmicks or tricks, which is why I’ve always appreciated Daily Worker and Harold Whit Williams. His songs have this timelessness, embracing life’s joy and generally kicking it out with a tasty little hook that easily satisfies. Now, we’ve got a fresh track for your ears, dropping in some chunky punk riffs, with a tasty little solo, and a bit of jubilation hitting in the chorus. When it switches gears and drops in that punch, you’re immediately greeted with a that tasty treat you’ve been looking for all day. This track will appear on a new album titled Burn it All Down (Songs for Corey) dropping on November 16th via Radio Gurl Records.

The Brights Share Enough of You

We’re still a few weeks away from the release of Oyster Rock, but boy oh boy do you need to hear this new single from the Brights. You’d be excused if you expected this hard bouncing bit of rock n’ roll swagger, as the tune opens up with this bounding bit of pub piano; I totally expected a Nick Lowe twist to creep in here. That said, the vocals come in with this Aussie cool, or maybe even Cali cool, feeling like a crisp bit of sea spray landing on you after a warm walk on the beach. Thinking through the previous singles on the record, this might be the one that feels the most aligned to all my tastes, kicking in this bit of indifferent cool that makes the song inescapable. Meritorio Records releases Oyster Rock on December 1st.

Adam Franklin Announces New Bolt of Melody LP + Swervedriver Reissue

Everything old is new again, so it seems Adam Franklin and Swervedriver are going to reissue their heralded 99th Dream this January. But, for all intents and purposes, reissues are a dime a dozen these days, so I’m more excited that Adam has announced a new Bolts of Melody LP. This go round, he’s teamed up with the usual suspects, aimed at scoring a film, so to speak, and letting the tracks come to life on their own. The first single from Film Noir is this beautiful dreamland, creating this cavernous sound where atmosphere rains down from the speakers, the lyrics almost coming across like softly hummed mantra. This is a beautiful place to begin your day. Outer Battery Records will release both the new Bolts LP and the Swervedriver reissue on January 24th.

Starman Jr. Shares Thin Thread Single

Definitely in some sort of mood today, and with that, throwing on this beautiful new Starman Jr tune. Adam Porter’s been recording at home for years, only recently using the Starman Jr moniker to get his music out there. He’s influenced by the outsider pop of the 1960s, which seems like a nod to an era that’s certainly had a few stones turned over the last few years. The production is striking, considering the work’s done primarily at home, but feeling like there are all these delicate elements like the tinkering keys and synth wash that buoys the melody. This is a pensive piece that really play’s well on its simplicity and construction, so I hope you enjoy!

Paul Cook & the Chronicles Share Hello Moon, Drop New LP

I’ve been a fan of Paul Cook’s voice for quite some time; he’s been featured on this site with his band Paul Cook & the Chronicles. I felt like the opening track from their new LP, Cheers Love, was the perfect way to get music coverage started this week; it’s light and airy, the way we all wish our Monday’s were, starting fresh. I really love the way the “hello moon” of the chorus just kind of hangs in the air, washing over you with emotion, as the moonbeams would do on a late night walk under the stars. Cheers Love, the new LP, is now available!

Last Week’s Jams (10.30 – 11.2)

Last week was a bit of struggle. Had a bit of the post-Levitation exhaustion, plus that whole Halloween thing with my little kids. So, maybe not as on top of it as we usually are, though we filled in the latter bit of the week with some jams. We got to post incredible indiepop from the likes of The Laughing Chimes and Postal Blue, with an added bonus Rock n’ Recipe piece from Lightheaded. Good to see the announcement of Austin’s Wet Dip‘s forthcoming LP, so we made sure that was included in our coverage. Plus, since last week was Bandcamp Friday, we had tons of recommendations such as the Smashing Times, Erik Nervous, and more…just because it’s not a Friday doesn’t mean you can’t buy an LP!
