Optic Sink Drop Glass Blocks Single

For me, I love a track that forces me to indulge, to let myself go and just be present in the musical moment, such as this new hit from Optic Sink. When you open the door to this tune, you’re hit by these thumping industrial beats, though left with plenty of space to allow your mind (and the song) to drift. Natalie Hoffmann (of NOTS) calls out near the two-minute mark, offering up this distant post-punk delivery that feels as if its got icy cool running right through it. We get to journey through the song, letting the band build and fold textures into one another; there’s a weighted heaviness at times, and other times, they employ space to keep the playful side alive. They’ll be dropping Glass Blocks on September 8th via Feel It Records.

Sun June Announce Bad Dream Jaguar

Sun June‘s newest record should be absolutely huge, which comes as no surprise to those of us mucking about in the Austin music scene. Today, they announce Bad Dream Jaguar, with a single that serves as the perfect summary for their entire catalogue. If you lock into the rhythmic nature of the tune, it seemingly works as a sublime track to turn up as you head down the road; it has that movement naturally coursing through, particularly in the way the guitars are recorded too. But, with Laura Colwell’s vocals hanging loftily in the air, you can feel the oppressive heat of Texas and the need to just soak up the sheer size of the state. Personally, I love the noisy discord at the end, adding that devil-may-care attitude to their well-crafted blend of pop rock. Bad Dream Jaguar is out on October 20th via Run for Cover Records.

Fuckleberry Hinn Share Nobody Single

Any band in this day and age willing to take on the heralded double LP deserve a medal, thus why I’m here to turn your attention towards Norway’s Fuckleberry Hinn. For me, this song works in multiple stages, almost taking on this dreaming pastoral vibe, with just a hint of cymbal work adding the slightest hint of percussion. Then there’s a slight plot twist underneath, adding in more texture while still trying to balance a bit of the melody. Some emphatic moments add some kick to the tune, illustrating the band’s willingness to build movement within the track; I just love the way it seems to kick on and stomp in here. If you’re enjoying this number, be sure to put Neither/Nor on your radar; it hits on September 1st.

Versing Announce Tape II, Share New Single

Having been quite for the past 3 to 4 years, Versing returns this week with a brand new batch of songs for you to enjoy. This single, announcing both their new Tape II and a brief West Coast tour, really got me going. Opening with a wall bit of feedback, it quickly moved into the melodic territory, with a little bit of shoegaze underbelly working on those guitars. You can hear the cascading dreaminess of the guitars working their way, with these sort of sated vocals cresting down in the midst. Personally, it feels like Sonic Youth toning it down to play at a retirement home in the future…and I mean that in the best way! Tape II drops Friday, and they’ll be running form Vancouver to San Fran starting that same day!

Single Lash Announce Ladida

I’ve been screaming from the ATH mountaintop about Single Lash years; they’ve been one of the only true gothic leaning bands in town…and they’re just absolutely huge live. With news of Ladida hitting, I really couldn’t wait to have some time to press play, and sit with the weight of this tune. There’s this heavy resonance here, with the band’s patience paying off huge dividends as it lets you just soak in the vast depths; I feel like its the musical equivalent of a late night bubble bath by candlelight. Rodolfo’s drumming is stellar, pounding out those machine gun fills, and Nicolas’ voice continues to mature with time, giving me chills when he delivers the line “ooh, what times is it there” with a faint quiver. They release Ladida on October 13th!

Bed Bits Announce New LP, Share Ceiling

Monday’s have a tendency to make you feel out of whack a bit, and what better way to start new music this week then this bewildering bit of bedroom pop from Bed Bits. There’s definitely a steadiness to the tune, be it the ringing guitars or the snappy cymbal work, but the little nuances lurking beneath really burrowed into my head today. There’s a buzzing sax as the guitars churn emphatic notes, only for a bit of a dissonant tone to kind of take control as Alex Edgeworth lets the vocals rain down carefully from the skies. There are moments when the speed of the guitars feels like its going to run right off, only for it to settle right back into the locked groove that enables the tune to run laps around the inside of your mind. As for the video treatment, the constant change of colors matches the vibrant musical textures, all of it tying together seamlessly. If you’re digging it, a self titled LP drops on September 27th via I’m Into Life Records.

Last Week’s Jams (8.7 – 8.11)

Admittedly, we might have outdone ourselves last week; I’m fairly certain I’m the one to blame. Somehow, we tossed up 40 songs, though a few are unavailable in the streaming sites, so you’ve only got 38 tracks on this week’s playlist. There’s a ton of Austin stuff, with new music from Daiistar, Semihelix, Half Dream and more…obligatory A Giant Dog is in there and such. Plus, still continuously impressed by the magic that is Prewn. Oh, and Australia’s buzzing at the moment, and their music isn’t half-bad either, with new tracks from the Small Intestines and Soft Covers being considered as must listens. So, if you’ve got an hour or two to kill…go on and stream!

Half Stack Share Burnt Single

While there’s a fogginess that’s swept over the Oakland scene, in a certain musical sense, Half Stack are bringing something a little bit different. They’ve got a little Southern boogie to their sound, and the vocals feel neighborly. I just imagine like a J Mascis figure inviting me over to a BBQ of some sort. Still, there’s definitely a slow burn of Cali sun shining through your speakers here, which is down to the way the riffs have this sort of understated fieriness to them…well, that and the way the male and female vocalists intertwine. Sitting Pretty is out October 6th via Forged Artifacts/Royal Oakie.

Half Dream Share Will I Still Bloom, Announce LP

I’ve been championing Paige Berry and her Half Dream project since they released the excellent Monster of Needing EP back in 2020. Now, news comes across that we’ll finally be getting the band’s debut Will I Still Bloom LP this October, and we’ve got the title track from Will I Still Bloom. This song’s filled with tons of little details that illustrate just how much the band’s grown; I love the little guitar tickles atop Berry’s voice and the thumping drums for the first 45 seconds or so. Then, at 53 seconds, the track shoots off, layering in a dreamier vibe from the guitars as Paige delivers a striking vocal performance. The band take a moment to flex their musicianship, then jump right back to the affair at hand, brooding in mood while we await the next huge chorus! Everything in this track just feels like a huge step for the band, and if Paige ever doubted herself, this song is evidence that she’s clearly blossomed into one of Austin’s finest songwriters. The Radio Field Share She Needs Therapy Single

I’ve been covering Lars Schmidt’s project the Radio Field the last few years or so, and with Don’ts and Dos hanging on the end of August horizon, we get a chance to hear one more track before the record officially hits. When this track dropped in, it had this huge kick to it that immediately took me aback; it felt like a really punch bit of pop rock, and for some reason reminded me of the Rentals. Lars gets some harmony help by friend Mimi Welldirty here, building in some vocal textures that allow for maximum hook potential. A bit of snappiness with a huge wallop of volume have this single sitting as one of the LPs standouts. Don’ts and Dos drops via Subjangle on August 25th.
