Pardoner Release My Wagon Single

Peace Loving People is scheduled for a June 23rd release, but I’ve already penciled in this new Pardoner for some heavy rotation at the pool parties. Okay, so those parties are in my backyard with my wife and my kids and our inflatable pool, but still! The tune just has this sipping-on-a-beverage chill to it; the kind of cool that makes you run your hands through your hair and soak in the world around. Now, that doesn’t mean it’s all sunshine and rainbows (or cool shades and pots of gold) as there’s definitely some great guitar riffs ripping through your speakers if you’ve got this one at high volume. Get ready for some pool jams, order the new album from Bar None!

Belinda May Share Sparkling Pop Tune

Japanese shoegaze band Belinda May pop up from time to time on these pages, and I’m always glad to share their sound. I mean, its hard not to get excited by the jangling guitar licks that wrap up the melody in this nice delicious package to deliver into your ears. The whole Covid situation impacted their trajectory, as they were riding high on the release of “Beautiful Days,” but now with new singer Harada in tow, the band seem even better. The snappy drums catch the beat and ride those sunny moments to a hook-laden result that’s going to be rewarding the minute you turn it up. This new track appears on a 7″ for Fastcut Records.

Expensive Music Band Sing About Cool Aunty

Expensive Music Band was not quite on my radar until this year, but now I can’t help but to just turn on a single when it comes our way, like this latest single, “Cool Aunty.” This go round we find the band in slow-burning fashion, regaling us with an homage to all the strong bad-ass women that influence us, and our children. I love how the band seems to employ an almost surf meets garage vibe, though they’re elevating it beyond even what I expect. There’s lush arrangements throughout the tune, leading the listener through a sort of ceremonious version of rock n’ roll; you’ll also find some syllable playfulness from Troon Lienad that’s absolutely marvelous. Pencil in Things to Say at a Barbecue for your listening pleasure; it drops on June 16th via Exclusive Culture/Permanent Slump.

I am really hoping that the genius and joy of Being Dead shines through and emerges into the greater musical realm outside of Austin; they feel like they’ve been our best band for years, and finally it seems everyone else is catching on to their act. Generally speaking, the band operate with lots of live humor and constant switches mid-tune. But, here, you get a little bit of their wit by way of their performance in the video, although the song is much more traditional in a sense. It’s got this natural warmth from Juli’s vocal performance, settling into the song once the galloping percussive element is peeled away. When it meets up with Cody’s voice, they build in this creamy psychedelia that pervades the whole tune. It’s time for you to be listening to Being Dead; they drop When Horses Would Run on July 14th via Bayonet Records. (Plus there are like five or so copies of their debut 7″ from ATH Records HERE.)

The Latest Single from The Toads

This recent Toads track has been bouncing around in my head since last week when it first came out. There’s this natural chug to it, rocking with this rad riff on cruise control. It allows the bass and drums to join at their leisure, seemingly building speed into the song, while steadying folks with the vocals. At 1:42, the song begins to let loose, which is where I totally got hooked, as there’s a rise and fall lyrical moment that sets up a quick drop into a bass line that leaves the listener with one final hook you’ll enjoy! The Toads will release In the Wilderness on June 9th via Upset the Rhythm.

Feeling Small Shares The Room Acts Small

This past Friday our friend Chase Weinacht, who currently is operating under his Feeling Small moniker, released another great single. His wordplay is perfect, and in a strange way, reminded me of the first time I listened to John K. Sampson. But, when I read through the credits, the song also encompasses one of the reasons I’ve really been digging his solo work…the community. This track features local Austin artists like Grace Rowland, Andrew Stevens and Santiago Dietche, all artists we’ve written about, but more importantly, all artists who are part of the lifeblood of the last decade plus of Austin music. It shows a level of trust in friends and in collaborators, which I know Chase values, so that makes me value him and his work all the more. Just listen already.

Certain Times Drop Lose Control Single

Certain Times have been popping up on ATH quite a bit, with their album Desire slated for release in just over a month here. Today, the band share this heavy-hitter, featuring this thumping rhythmic bounce that I couldn’t quite get out of my head. It seems so simple, just a quick thumping punch, giving the song this driving nature that allows the vocals to soar in and out, some spoken, some sung in dramatic fashion. That pulsing beat never fades, even leaving room for some playful vocal hooks to run the song down to its closing moments. If you’re digging, Desire will be out June 9th via Double Phantom.

Heavenly Share New Video for C is the Heavenly Option

This last Friday the world was fortunate to have another reason to celebrate Heavenly, as the band reissued Le Jardin de Heavenly via Rob and Amelia’s Skep Wax Records. But, they also wanted to celebrate by gathering a who’s-who of celebrity indiepop gods to feature in a playful new video; it also features some old Super 8 footage of the band to accompany the new clip. Like the song, you’ll find that this video is nothing short of charming, giving you yet another reason to love the group and their work. Speaking of their work, have you grabbed the reissue? Last Week’s Jams (5.8 – 5.12)

Last week kicked off with a bang; we covered a whole bunch of tunes right off the bat, only to kind of fade towards the end of the week. Still, we managed to get up 20 tunes you should listen to, though the Mope City single isn’t out there yet on streaming services. Some Austin love came our way with Tearjerk and Balmorhea getting solid mentions, while we couldn’t help but to continue our fawning over Night Beats and their latest barrage of bangers. Threw in some new Shelflife releases from Lost Tapes and Youth Valley, and in the end, the new stuff from Shrapnel and Special Friend definitely won awards for my faves of the week. You’ve got an hour of legendary streams below!

Balmorhea Share Latest Video, New Conditions

Knowing that there is a new Balmorhea album on the horizon is always an exciting time of the year in Austin; you can expect the band to pop up somewhere interesting to share the album and the experience…which is always equally as special as the music. On this new single, I love the way the song builds in slowly, tinkering with pianos before you even get a bit of percussion to liven up the feel. Those moments are fleeting, and purposefully, letting the song ebb and flow, allowing the listener to sort of move in and out of consciousness as the song unfolds before them. Pendant World is out on June 16th via Deutsche Grammophon.
