If you’ve been following these poorly written pages over the last few years, our adoration for Tan Cologne has been pretty obvious, so whenever something new pops up, you better believe I’m going to chime right in with my thoughts. Today, we caught wind of a new single from the duo, a preview of an EP they recorded while holding a residency in Italy. This tune is penned as a communication with otherworldly beings, providing a meditation on the meaning of pathways and borderlands in our lives. Musically, it’s as shadowy as ever, with every little note just carefully rising. You can hear light cymbal work and little synth washes moving in and out from the depths of this musical trench, crafting this intangible piece of beauty that seamlessly slips through your hands and your mind. We’ll keep you posted as we hear more about the release of the band’s residency EP via Labrador.

The Garment District Ready New LP

Our friends over at HHBTM will be releasing a new record from the Garment District (Jennifer Baron of Ladybug Transistor) this September, and there’s been a delightful single fluttering about you would likely enjoy. There’s about a minute of ambiance, opening the video and flirting with imagery, but, it just seems to be hanging on the edges, eventually fading away to let the song run in with this mixture of bounding pop and psychedelia; singer Lucy Blehars voice shines through it all, hitting these crystalline notes that land perfectly in the mix. The track moves back and forth between bits of softly curled elegance and that stomping psych boogie, so you get all my favorite pieces tied into this musical trip that rewards time and time again. Emma Anderson (Lush) Announces Debut LP

It seems weird that someone with the pedigree of Emma Anderson is just now releasing her debut solo record, but seeing as I love those Lush records, I’ll gladly spend some time with a songwriter I feel like a lot of folks have overlooked. According to the press release, it seems Emma has been sitting with a lot of these songs since the reformation of Lush, but it took some encouragement for her to take them up again as a solo artist. Honestly, this seems like it fits perfectly into the climate of the current times; the texture alone feels like its carefully lifting Emma’s voice into the listener’s ears, filling in everything behind the careful jangle and churns of guitar. It’s crazy too, as this just feels timeless in a sense, like its rooted in nostalgia, yet updated to meet the masses in the middle. Sonic Cathedral will release Pearlies this October.

Quality Used Cars Share Seven Minute Opus

There’s something magnificent in the way Francis Tait is executing his songwriting goals, particularly with his band Quality Used Cars. On the band’s latest single, it moseys into the bar, brimming with a sort of Aussie swagger; the track charms and draws you into the narration. At times, you feel like you’re in some old honky-tonk, being serenaded by Francis, but then its like the rest of the band jumped up on stage and you get this smoldering burn that’s hitting home with this Texas boy. The benefit of the song running over the cup, so to speak, is that you get these different little switches, like the track’s middling melodic pursuit, opening the latter half of the track to more of a solemn plod. Spending time with this track alone will immediately encourage you to go grab Quality of Life, the new LP from Spoilsport Records.

Who Is She Share 96 Ghouls

Who Is She is going to be on everyone’s playlist this week I reckon, as the band’s a supergroup made up of members of Chastity Belt, Lisa Prank and Tacocat, leaving us with the impression that there’s no way you can’t like this! You immediately get this bob and weave from the bass line as you press play, flirting with that sort of frantic post-punk as the guitars knife their way into the picture. Two vocal pieces impact your listening, with a sedate vocal in the front of the mix, while you get an emphatic group chant jumping in to punch up the style. I’ve only heard one track, and I know I’ll be grabbing their Goddess Energy LP; it drops on August 25th via Father Daughter Records.

Talking Kind Share Trouble, Prep Debut LP

I got turned onto Pat Graham awhile back when he was playing Spraynard (thanks to the good folks at Square of Opposition), but now Pat’s working on his solo stuff under the name Talking Kind. This new single is definitely something special for those that just want a good ballad to gently run across your living space. The strum work is nice, with Graham’s voice taking on these really soft notes that are likely endearing to those in love with classic pop punk/emo sounds. It’s a little bit of self-deprecation too, with Pat copping to his inability to keep his mouth closed, which has its own set of charms. If you’re digging, It Did Bring Me Down is out September 8th via Lauren Records.

Pachyman Announces Switched-On

Honestly, I’m a super-avid Pachyman fan. I was super stoked to hear that he’d be making his way to Austin for Levitation, and now I’m equally stoked to hear that he’s got a new record coming out this year. The LA instrumentalist definitely lets his Latin roots shine in his work, and yet there’s something in his style that makes it feel more than an homage…its an intangible something that makes it feel like part of the lifeblood of the modern Latin music. Plus, he’s still flirting with his love of Jamaican dub, but making it entirely his own sound, and I’m going to keep jamming this tune all day long. Switched On is out via ATO on September 29th.

Couchboy Share New Single, Prep Singles Collection

David MacDonald is just hanging out in Massachusetts, cranking out jam after jam, so much so that he’s even dropping a Singles Collection covering the last couple of years of his songwriting as Couchboy. But, one track that I’ve been digging on isn’t making the cut, as it might be too new! Treason jumps right into, stomping hard before letting the fuzzy guitars go off on a nice ride through your speakers. MacDonald’s vocals have this sugary melodic nature to them, which is the perfect counterpoint to the driving rhythm of the track, splitting the vibe into the traditional quiet loud quiet dynamic. His songwriting is steeped in a classic alternative song, and you’ll be all the better kicking the volume up super high here!

Semiwestern Share Pose Single

I meant to get this new Semiwestern track up last week; it was released on Friday, brandishing a very particular brand of Texas slowcore. When I listened, I was struck by how lonesome the song felt; it feels like you’ve been sort of isolated or suspended in space, yet your not quite complaining. As I spent more time, the details surrounding the core give the song this cavernous feel behind, still making you feel small, albeit part of something larger. That’s the thing that keeps me coming back here, its like you get to soak in your solitude, take a bit of respite from all that’s around you. Lost Film Announce Keep It Together

I’ve been jamming to Lost Film for a long while now, but Jimmy’s mostly been quiet the last few years, save for the odd single here and there. I reckon he’s been working on the Relief Map label side a bit. But, none of that matters one bit as Lost Film is back with its first new full length in about 4 years! Those of you who’ve followed the project will notice the jangling guitar lines, twisting and turning around Jimmy’s voice, though they do seem a bit more patient here, moving the sound more towards a more modern bit of guitar pop. There are some snappy drum bits and emphatic vocal turns to tether the project to its origins, but absolutely nothing is wrong with a bit of growth! Keep It Together is out on September 15th.
