The Sour Notes Release Middle Distance

Sour Notes are one of those Austin bands we all seem to take for granted. They work at their own pace, take some musical risks and for some reason, seem to constantly fly under the radar of what’s deemed “cool” in this silly town. On this excursion, the band completely shy away from vocals, instead building this heavy wall of indie rock sound, filling your cup with textural notes that overflow with nods to all the band’s various influences. Guitars toy with classic guitar pop from the 80s, though there’s an underlying bit of melody and synth washes spilling onto the floor. Always appreciate the band keeping it real real DIY.

Blood Return with Self Improvement Single

After delivering their rad Bye Bye EP, former Austin outfit Blood return with this rad new single to satiate your needs. This tune plays upon the group’s ability to reign in the cacophony of feuding noise and bringing it to a driving center, flirting with just the barest hint of melody. Like the song, the video encompasses the frantic nature, with images and clips overlapping and growing on your screen, matching the musical eruptions spewing forth from the group’s amps. Clearly their move to Philly is paying off as the band now have the backing of Fire Talk on their new single; hard work pays off kids.

Lust for Youth Drop New Single

I don’t DJ often, but when I do, it’s always got a Lust for Youth jam in there. The Danish outfit provide this heavy electronica, pulsing and dark, just like their newest single dancing down below. It’s their first work since their self titled LP from 2019, and they’ve trimmed the project down to just two members. But, just because their slimming down, doesn’t mean this song’s not heavy on the hooks, which is their pop specialty. I can just picture myself dancing in my won two-foot circle, air punching as glitter falls from the ceiling and this jams thumps through the speakers. Hopefully this signals more great new hits on the horizon.

Michael James Tapscott Releases Michael, the Worst EP

It’s that time of year when we start to feel nostalgic and reflective, which for me, typically means indulging in tunes slower than where my tastes typically gravitate. Luckily, there’s this striking new EP from Michael James Tapscott, so why not spend some time talking about my favorite of the five tunes, “Luxembourg Gardens.” There’s something in this that feels like its Rod Stewart meets Kevin Morby; it’s this big bold voice, softly buoyed by the accompanying arrangements, allowing the whole track to swell into this enormous wave of emotions as you stand, waiting for it to crash upon you. Michael, the Worst EP is available to take on your walk toay.

Blues Lawyer Share Chance Encounters

It’s been a few years since we’ve gotten our hands on a solid Blues Lawyer LP, but it looks like 2023 will finally bring us all a little bit of joy by way of All in Good Time. Feedback opens the door for pounding rhythm sections to toss us right into the mix, with the guitars knifing in form the distance and steadying the noise simultaneously. You’ll find the vocals hanging themselves out to dry on this pure pop clothesline; there are certain notes just dangling on the ends with this joyous melody. There’s even a little aid from backing vocals, all before the song wrestles with a furious stomp that helps bring it to a close; it’s rad to see the band not missing a beat despite a little bit of an absence. They drop the new LP on February 17th via Dark Entries.

It’s been a hot minute since we’ve run our weekly recap, but last week we covered a ton of ground, so why not give you a chance to see what all we were digging on our end? Hibou Unleashes Perfect Pop Gem

Although my tastes have been all over the place this morning, it’s good to settle on a brand new track from Hibou that hits right where my daily musical tastes trend. Peter Michel’s project has a new EP coming our way in January, and this single offers a hint at the treats in store. It’s got that sweetness indiepop fans adore, just barely coated in a bit of heavy atmospherics to let it swim in the pools of dream pop. Ultimately, I always land on those crisp guitar jangles, juxtaposed with the pulsing rhythm and warm wash of the vocal play. This lands in that territory between early Wild Nothing and late Pains of Being Pure at Heart, so if that sounds like you, just press play. Arc EP is out on January 13th!

Bad Bad Hats Share Super America Video

It’s Friday, so you likely need something to brighten your day, especially if you’re around Austin and seeing the drizzle drip down your window. So, why not celebrate with the Bad Bad Hats; the band are dropping this fresh video of their hit single “Super America,” which features a remastered take on the band’s song from a decade ago. Originally, the song popped up on their It Hurts EP, but that’s ten years past, so we’ve got to throw it a birthday party, with this heavily catchy tune. It’s a reminder of the band’s ability to sprinkle hook after hook into their songwriting…and might it even encourage you to listen to their most recent LP, Walkman? Tap your toes, spin about, take these pop vibes into your weekend.

An Echoic Begs Take Me With You to Outer Space

There’s something in this season of the year that always makes us reflect, for whatever reason; I blame all the family time. Still, you need a soundtrack, and this morning this track from Sweden’s An Echoic just magically works. It’s got this adventure in it, be that in the song’s title itself, or the way the vocals get stretched to the edge of the Earth’s atmosphere. Something in the way the vocals just kind of hang on to the edge of certain tones reeks of the longing, the sense that we’re all barely hanging on, the fragility of it all…thus the need for that new adventure into outer space.

Long Winded Modest Mouse Show Preview

While The Moon & Antarctica is widely considered Modest Mouse‘s crowning achievement, there are some, like myself who consider The Lonesome Crowded West a near perfect album. Dropped in 1997, it didn’t make its way into my regular rotation until a year or so after. But, I was a fickle college music fan, gravitating to various bands and styles, then moving onto the next. Still, upon graduation in 2002, I packed my old Honda Accord with one of those traveling cases of CDs, a few packs of smokes and my sleeping bag…and I drove from Austin to my new home, Yellowstone National Park. It was that first 24 hour road trip that really made me indebted to that LP, so much so, that now, some 20 years on from that adventure, I can still recall every twist and turn of the songs, and every little nuanced moment where Modest Mouse made it into my life in those months. I’m fortunate to be able to catch the band touring behind the entirety of said LP here in Austin on Monday; tickets are SOLD OUT, so perhaps ask a friend..
