The Early Monrnings Share Ultra Modern Rain

If you’re not into a jittery bit of rock n’ roll, then perhaps skip on my friend. But, if you love the sound, love the way it throws your center-of-balance off, or love the way it perfectly contrasts with melody, then you’re going to love this new track from The Early Mornings. This brand new single runs straight for you, charging like an enraged bull with this throbbing bass line and sharp guitar. But, Annie Leader’s melodic entry doesn’t slow things down, rather it makes the song all the more insatiable, building up the playfulness and volume as it bounces towards the close. If you dig it, the band release their Ultra Modern Rain EP on January 20th.

En Attendant Ana Announce Principia

Following on the heels of the ATH approved Juillet, French outfit En Attendant Ana announce their third long-player, Principia. With that news, we’ve got the album’s first single (and title track); it gives us a slight departure from previous singles, though deep dives into the band’s catalog illustrates the magic that’s been there all along. Mostly, this song is a drifter of sorts, floating back and forth between your speakers, matched by the slow-motion video footage accompanying the tune; it’s carefully plotted around the melody, letting the song rise towards a climactic moment, which may or may not be out of reach. What’s interesting is the way one decides to interpret the title, both of the album and the tune. In Spanish, it could mean begin or beginning, referencing the fact that it’s a slightly new evolution of the group, or the first track. It could also look to French where it mostly likely means principle, establishing a new way of viewing the band. Either way, we’re hearing something fresh from the group, and that’s never bad thing. Principia is out February 24th via Trouble in Mind.

Dot Dash Release Madman in the Rain

I hate to admit it, but Dot Dash is one of those bands I take for granted. They consistently release a great record every few years, though the last time we heard from them was back in 2018, before the world went to shit. But, this Friday they’re dropping their rad new Madman in the Rain LP, and we’ve got an early listen that warrants your time today…not to mention a great reminder to never forget them. Listening through, I’m really struck by the ballad-esque title track, though that opening bass line in “Forever Far Out” sets the tone for a record chock-full of bangers. Little pop, little punk, little attitude, lots of hooks…a record you’ll come back to time and time agin. Madman in the Rain drops on Friday courtesy of the Beautiful Music.

Show Preview: Alvvays @ Stubbs – TONIGHT

If you’ve been anywhere near the indie sphere the last few months, and perhaps even in the pop realm, you’ve definitely heard people raving about Blue Rev, the new LP from Alvvays. I covered every single that came out, increasingly impressed with how much the band took their bedroom indiepop sound from years ago and continued to grow it into a full-fledged pop rock masterpiece, brimming with nods to their past whilst readying them for arena rock performances. Lucky for Austin fans, the band will take the stage at Stubbs this evening, accompanied by tourmates Slow Pulp. You can expect a smattering of hits, and maybe a deep cut or two, but you can rest assured that Molly Rankin and company are going to be brining their A game. Tickets are still available HERE! Doors at 7, show begins at 8 PM.

 

Eye Tiger Drop Touchdown + Release Autumn Tropical

If ever there was a sucker for a propulsive little beat and a heavy croon on top, I’d be that guy. Chicago’s Eye Tiger definitely fits that bill, particularly with “Touchdown.” From the start, it gets right under you skin, creeping along those muscular lines and getting you to tap your toes. Synth craftsman Evan Ennis drapes his deep tones on top, careful not to weigh down the hook here; I love that everything seems so perfectly balanced there, allowing melody and bounce to mingle at the party. If you’re digging it, or enjoy acts like Black Marble, might we suggest you give a listen to the debut Autumn Tropical? Do so!

Starman Jr. Shares Bad

There are a ton of artists who claim bedroom pop ethos, and while I generally like those, there are only a few that really capture that sentiment in its entirety. Starman Jr. is one such artists, crafting quite pop tunes that tug at you, begging you to just immerse yourself in a good headphones and pillow listen. There are even some vocal notes that sound like early Elliott, which I’m definitely not against. The Louisiana artist has tons of similar tunes, just waiting for you to fall into that listening hole, which seems like an apt way to spend your upcoming Bandcamp Friday.

Homesickness Shares Your Fire Must Dance Again

Danish outfit Homesickness will be releasing their debut album, Blood Rush, real soon, and for many of us, this might be our first introduction to the project. It’s a septet centered around the voice and craft of Malthe Junge; there’s something very Bill Callahan-esque about his presentation, which was what immediately drew me to this track. As it progresses beyond strum and vocals, the dramatic swell creates this soft-spoken sense of wonder, and I could only dive in further. The arrangement lifts the song to the spiritual, no doubt alluding to some of Junge’s Leonard Cohen influences. Blood Rush is certainly shaping up to be something quite nice; we’ll keep you updated on a release date when we hear from the band’s label, Pink Cotton Candy Records.

Ali Greig Drops This Modern Nightmare EP

Ali Greig comes to us as a former member of Acting Strange, who we’ve covered quite a bit, but I’m loving this new EP he just dropped last night, haunting us with it’s hooks. It’s interesting to listen to the process, as there’s some bits of classic kind of British punk vibes, particularly in “Everyday is Halloween,” but the EP as a whole has him playing with some other formats, such as “I’m a Pisces, Bitch.” There’s a little something in there for everyone, and I’m excited to hear what comes next for the songwriter, so we’ll keep you tuned in on that news. For now, enjoy some new hits.

Paul Cook and the Chronicles Shares New Single

Paul Cook and the Chronicles have popped up over here on ATH throughout the years, with the band steadily churning out incredible pop songs. Friday, the band dropped a brand new single, leaving us with this crisp bit of churning guitars that scream with melody. Cook’s voice is always a charmer, able to stretch into different tones, but the highlight of this song came via the track’s closing moments; it’s a sharp little jam that would likely have fans of acts like War on Drugs salivating at the musicianship, which seems like plenty of reason to get behind the band. Keep an eye out, as the band continue to crank out hit after hit!

Last Week’s Jams, Today (10.24 – 10.28)

It’s strange. Last week, I was complaining that the tunes were drying up as its nearing the end of the year. And here we are, RayRay and I getting a solid 20 songs up, plus interviews and coverage of Levitation. Guess we crushed it, along with our friend JWagner, who gave us some solid Babe Rainbow coverage. Personally, of all the tracks I loved last week, that Heather Trost tune is just a flat out star; I need ya’ll to get behind me on this! Our Aussie friends in Deuce also dropped us a new ditty, plus we got a new Tubs announcement out there. Tune in and let us know what you’re loving.
