Mononegatives Share Facsimile Single

Felt like Monday was as good a day as any to get down and gritty on the week, so it’s perfect that we’ve got this new tune from Ontario’s Mononegatives to distort your speakers. As the band begin to play a bit more with drum machines, and their line-up, the tune brings in a bit of industrial sterility; it reminds me a lot of where bands like Weekend or Blank Dogs kind of left us, building huge walls of noise with melodic sprigs popping up through the cracks in the tune’s ground floor. It’s a long synth punk burner brought to you courtesy of Dowd Records.

Show Preview: Snail Mail + Goon Sax @ ACL Live (Tonight!)

Lindsey Jordan’s meteoric rise should come as no surprise to anyone, but with the release of Valentine, that build was cemented. So, it should come as no shocker that Snail Mail will be playing ACL Live this evening. But, other than remind you of the draw of that band, I’d like to take a minute to encourage those attending, or thinking of attending, to show up and see Goon Sax. Through three albums, we’ve raved about the band’s sound, and Mirror II showed the band continuing to grow their sound; there’s a maturity in the writing this go round, warranting an opening slot on one of the biggest US tours. Plus, its not every day you get a chance to see an Australian group on these shores (as touring becomes more challenging). We’ve got their whole 2nd LP streaming below, as its the one I’ve been spinning the most this morning! If you want tickets, they’re still available HERE.

Borzoi Drop Passing Single

Just as I’m lamenting the scene in our hometown, Borzoi pop up with a new single to wake me from my Austin doldrums. Be warned, turning this up at high volume is likely to lead to momentary delirium. The rhythmic section alone has this incredible push and pull to it, like the heavy swaying of a crowd on the verge of cathartic eruption. Hitting heavy at the front, they turn that into this almost playful angular moment right after the one-minute mark, hanging high upon the rafters of that pulsing rhythm. Why this band isn’t the most notable in town I don’t know, but we look forward to hearing more…as we’re still awaiting news on the follow-up to A Prayer for War (12XU)…and this may or may not feature on that release.

Tan Cologne Prep New LP + Share Topaz Wave

We’ve been supporting the work of Lauren Green since she played an integral part in Austin’s musical scene, years ago. As of late, she’s been focusing on her project with Marissa Macias as Tan Cologne; they’ve got one album under their belts, and it looks like another one is on the way. This first single feels like a study in patience; the percussion and guitar lines create this melodic trance, occasionally featuring little bubbling accents. There’s a moment when you get this effortless build that sort of plays upon live sequence, crafting a steady instrumental build that opens up just as it falls back to the initial pattern. The group will drop Earth Visions of Water Spaces this September via Labrador Records.

There were some great new tunes last week, and I certainly can’t get enough of some of the LPs that dropped, which we pointed you towards on Friday. The Dehd track that hit last week is for sure one of their best of late, but I’m still really partial to jamming to that Guy Capecelatro III album. Some intriguing tunes from the likes of Maria Chiara Argiro, Team Play and Rose Mercie make a nice appearance in this weeks track-listing, plus there’s a bunch of other tunes to get you started on Monday morning.

Smile Share What a Heart Is For

We’re going global today, having hit up Finland and jumping over to Italy with this brand new single from Smile. The group are brandishing a classic big guitar pop sound, flirting with the edges of jangle pop. At times, the tune hits at the later work of bands like Teenage Fanclub, hitting those heavy notes built around a nice little melodic moment. Other times, I can here an allegiance to REM at their poppiest, so suffice to say it’s a pretty classic rock sound here. For someone that spends a lot of time with the nostalgic sounds of the past, this just makes me, dare I say, smile.

Team Play Announce Debut LP, Wishes and Desires

Our friends over at Soliti are responsible for keeping us abreast with what’s cool over in the Finnish music scene, and I’m so very grateful. Today, they share news of Team Play‘s debut, with this darkly brooding single. It’s the brand of pop music that takes the tendencies from the mainstream and darkens the corners, adds a bit of haunting mystery to it, turning it into a vessel for something moving. Minja and Tapio’s vocals combine throughout the tune, and it’s that performance that’s really impactful, though I’ll admit the the rhythmic gallop has its magical draw too. Spend some time here today, and look for the label to release Wishes and Desires this June.

Bart Davenport Shares Holograms Video

Bart Davenport‘s latest solo effort, Episodes, feels like an instant classic, covering vast musical territory with bewildering storytelling…such as the track “Holograms,” which gets a video treatment today. At times, the song’s rhythm section brings in this groovy glam stomp, with the emphasis on the boogie; that boogies leads into the more Southern inspired guitar grooves that noodle their way, battling for supremacy. Bart, as the video presents, is the song’s centerpiece, however; he carries the song with this mixture of velvety seduction and natural bravado; I personally love the cascading pitch when he exclaims “because I’m terrified.” If you haven’t gotten to spend a lot of time with the new album, now’s as good a time as any to give it a listen; it’s also available via Tapete Records. Plus! If you’re in the great LA area, you have a chance to catch Bart live at the Permanent Records Roadhouse on May 19th with Earth Girl Helen Brown.

 

Flight Mode Share Twentyfour Single

I’m a big Flight Mode fan, and with the purity of the band’s revisionist Tx ’98 EP, the band landed with Chris Walla for production on their Torshov ’05 EP. This song seems like it has the classic Walla production touch, allowing the verses to wallow in the mellowness before emphatically bursting with a pop hook that swirls in the chorus. Sure, there are tons of bands that pull that off, but perhaps none better than Death Cab back in their heyday with Walla. Maybe that’s just the good songwriting of this Oslo based outfit; their brand new EP will be out next Friday courtesy of Sound as Language.
