Shaki Tavi Unleash Lip

The last month has had a lot of great coverage on Shaki Tavi, and admittedly, I’m always a few days late to the singles, but I’m on my game today folks! This brand new single just blows your hair back with sheer volume; your ears will certainly be left ringing if you don’t watch the volume knob carefully. To me, this single reminds me a lot of acts like Hum or Far from the late 90s alternative scene; they were loud and abrasive, but their songs always revolved around a melodic center, as you’ll hear in the single below. The way they’ve balanced the noise with the vocals in the mix works perfectly, and you can certainly hear why the masses are paying attention to the joyous noise coming our way. Minor Slip will be out on August 15th via Felte.

Cyan Pools Announce Ecstatic Visions

When you get a press release that claims a band is “unbothered by trend or zeitgeist,” you tend to approach such claims with skepticism. But, when listening to this new Cyan Pools single, I can hear that statement ringing; they sound a little bit like this, but also a little bit like that, and not a moment feels formulaic or phoned in for the masses. There are weird moments when it almost feels like prog-rock, using the vocals to kind of tip-toe around the track bit by bit. Then, it explodes into this euphoric chorus, which in a way reminds me a lot of the late 90s emo/pop punk (I don’t mind that one bit), particularly in the intermingling of the vocals. They’ve announced their new album Ecstatic Visions, which drops on August 29th via Dandy Boy Records.

Dragnet Drop Alta Vista Single

Frantically racing into a tune is the right way to go, if one were to ask me. Dragnet clearly know how its done, rushing right in with the feuding guitar lines stabbing at one another, with one a little more open and expansively jittery. The furious rush of the drums will certainly beg you to try and keep pace, and you’ll be surprised at how seamlessly the vocal delivery fits into the production, especially as the tune can feel like it’s spinning out of control in the best way imaginable. This is the second ripper we’ve heard from their forthcoming Dragnet Reigns, which drops on August 15th via Spoilsport Records.

Nuclear Daisies Share Toad Single

What does one do after spending years in the shoegaze/dream-pop realm? Well, like many peers, you pivot to some of the earlier sounds, much like the folks in Nuclear Daisies are doing on their latest single. Sonically, there are elements of the current dreamy genres, though the distortion/feedback seems more like a curtain than an interactive piece; it’s the backdrop atop which the group layer Alex Gehring’s vocals and this 90s electronic groove, straddling the past of acid house and presenting it in an updated fashion. This is the latest glimpse at their new album, First Taste of Heaven, which will drop this Friday via Portrayal of Guilt.

Goodbye Wudaoku Share Only Questions

Over in Manchester, Goodbye Wudaokou are prepping their sophomore release at the end of the Summer, and what better way to celebrate than by sharing a brand new single. This song’s energy should grab you immediately, letting the snap of the drum drive the rhythm while the guitars angle and jangle their way through the tune’s core. Mat Mills has worked up some great arrangements this go round too, using a slight little synth wash and some backing vocals from his partner Desiree Xu, each little nuance furthering the delights you’ll find lurking for you. Look for the new LP to drop end of August via Subjangle.

Immersion Announce WTF???

Monday inevitably opens you up to all sorts of vibes, but one vibe I’m always ready to get behind is Immersion, the duo of Colin Newman and Malka Spigel. I was fortunate enough to catch them at this year’s SXSW, and their mesmerizing performance elevated my affection. Today, they announce WTF?? with a brand new video and single; it operates in much the same way their previous work has, putting poetry atop carefully curated sonic structures. There’s a it of propulsion in the beat work this go round, but I’m really drawn to the light wave of ambiance that kind of blankets and pulls back on the tune. The duo will release the new LP on their label Swim on September 26th.

Welcome Strawberry Drop Desperate Flower

The ever-evolving work of Welcome Strawberry is always something that lures me into really deep listens; I don’t think they’ve delivered the same packaged sound once, and for that I’m grateful. If you listen to opening track “Fragrance Net” you will almost instantly notice that there’s this clarity to the beginning of the record, working more in a pop realm with an airy feel, as opposed to some of their earlier buzzsaw guitar moments. That said, you can take songs like “Doings of a Wraith” or “Check Scractchers” and you can see that the underlying sentiment to their songwriting is omnipresent, but they’ve repackaged it, keeping their sound fresh and interesting ere they grow stale. All sorts of vibes await those who press play on Desperate Flower; it’s available now courtesy of Cherub Dream Records.

Last Week’s Jams (7.21 – 7.25)

My summer vacation is about to wrap up, so I’ve been trying to cram as much rock n’ roll into the site as I can, and I feel like nearing 30 new songs is a pretty solid outing. There was new stuff from ever-present acts like Gregor, Cate Le Bon, Giant Day and more. Plus, there were some brand newish acts popping up on the scene that I think are certainly worth everyone’s time: The Cords and the Cindys, both UK outfits oddly enough. Some ATX love for Stella and the Very Messed and the Wild Kindness both dropping new tunes. Plus, there are several slow burns that will space out the listen, so you’ve got almost two hours of last week’s jams to enjoy!

Stella and the Very Messed Release Lack of Secrets

The last time we checked in on Stella and the Very Messed they were delivering one of the best pop punk tracks we’ve come across on our end this year. Today, as they continue to prep the masses for their next LP, they’re really showing the group’s range and growth, working the first minute with a predominantly electronic groove operating as the background, letting Stella Maxwell control the narrative. Near the minute mark, drums kick in, guitars start to ring, and the familiarity begins to open up; they finish out the song driving an anthemic chorus into your ear, fueled by this intermingling of the electronic groove and the band’s penchant for pop rock hooks…it’s the best of both worlds. They’ll drop their Big Familiar LP September 19th via Double Helix.

Creative Writing Announce Baby Did This

After releasing their True 90s EP earlier this year, folks were already keeping an eye on Massachusetts band Creative Writing. Today, the group returns with this great guitar pop track, announcing their debut album, Baby Did This. I love how the band sits in the groove between jangling guitar pop and modern americana; they don’t really push the sound either way, which inevitably allows the group to work on their own foundation. For me, the balance between the vocal stylings throughout help cement the band’s presence in my music listening; the verses work on a soft spoken nature, then the chorus kind of erupts with a forceful punch, though it never shies from the melody. Such a great reminder of this act’s quality; they drop Baby Did This on October 3rd via Meritorio.
