Stella and the Very Messed Share Big Familiar

The news of brand new Stella and the Very Messed has been sitting in my inbox for a few weeks, and I’m so excited about this record I couldn’t wait to share the news with you. Stella Maxwell, formerly of Cruiserweight, has been a powerhouse in the Texas music scene for several decades, and despite my love for all her previous works, this new single is just a straight hit. A light strum opens before the drums crash in with a wash of heavy guitar riffs, hitting you right in the face as Maxwell’s voice belts out notes with an assuredness of an indie rock veteran. The way the band pull back to kind of offer a little moment of rest, then blast back just builds this huge wall of power that washes over you again and again. You’ll be able to get yourself a copy of their new record, Big Familiar, this Fall via Double Helix Records.

Alexei Shishkin Announces Good Times

Spent last night at a bar called Good Times, so waking up to the announcement of a new record from Alexei Shishkin of the same name seems serendipitous. And, with that announcement comes this great tune, filling us in on the promise of Alexei’s forthcoming work. He’s operating with the perfect balance, if you ask me, as the track carefully plods in with some light notes, setting the backdrop for the tune. He fills that in with a bit of a bolder noise, pushing the sonic level way up high in a way that reminds me of a modern twist on some of the early Grandaddy LPs. Good Times will be released by Rue Defense on September 5th.

Thanks Light Share Costa Rica

If ever a song was justified as existing on this site, it would absolutely have to be the latest track from Austin’s Thanks Light. You see, both RayRay and I have spent time in Costa Rica, myself having lived there for some time, so the thematic reference of the happiness of that country definitely feel like they hit home. They’re offered in a playful style, sort of like a Texas version of “pura vida,” with twanging guitars being bent and stretched beneath a summery heat whilst elegant keys give the track a little more proverbial meat. Just a gentle sway in the breeze, like sitting beachside and sleeping in a hammock, “way down in Costa Rica.”

Moviola Share Slage Wave Video

There is something to be said about a band that’s 30 years down the road and still banging out masterful hits, like Ohio’s Moviola. They’re dropping their 11th album, Earthbound, at the end of this summer, and our latest listen has this casual bit of warm indie rock coming through your speakers. In a sense, it has the same musical sentiment that you’d find in an old Lucksmiths LP, offering these well-thought out melodies in simplistic forms that keep you returning to find solace in the music you love. I’ll admit, there’s nothing blowing your hair back in that modern sense, but rather you’re treated to great songwriting and arrangements that should put the new LP on your radar. Earthbound hits on August 29th via Dromedary Records.

Aus!Funkt Drop New Single

If you woke up today looking for a little bit of musical energy to carry you to the end, might you try on this Aus!Funkt jam that dropped today? The Montreal outfit just dropped a AA single today, and man, the rhythmic pulse of this tune below is just too solid not to crank up. Almost instantly your body is propelled into motion, whether that’s full body swaying or toe-tapping, you can’t deny the fashionable pulse of this hit. They flesh out the track with layers of shadowy vocals to pull on those dark-wave notes, with other musical excursions blasting all around the track. Don’t hesitate, and just click play!

Fortunato Durutti Marinetti Drops a Perfect Pair

There aren’t a lot of songwriters working in the fashion of Fortunato Durutti Marinetti; in a sense, he resembles more of a troubadour at a lounge, though is wordplay is far more sophisticated. On this tune, the track is a subtle love ballad, and its the subtleties that draw you in as the track unfolds. You’ll find these little keyboard stabs, giving a lift to Marinetti’s vocal delivery, sort of operating like a dance around one another. The guitar licks within have a little shimmy, sort of wiggling about in the background, though they recede for the sublime little breakdown in the song’s latter half. If this style fits your needs, grab Bitter Sweet, Sweet Bitter from Quindi Records on July 25th.

Origami Ghosts Share Heaven’s Gate Video

I love the immediate hook that pops up when you click play on the new video from Origami Ghosts. A rush of jangling folk guitars ramp you up where your body starts to sort of convulse in this natural rhythm and everything begins to glow with joy. Plus, how often do you get to hear a little bit of flute in your indie rock diet? Probably not enough! The frantic nature of the tune lets the vocals crawl atop, scratching at your ears as the tune pushes forward; it’s also of note that you can hear the album’s title as part of the chorus here. A Fine Time to Talk About Nothing is out on August 8th.

Gus Baldwin Drops Brand New Single

From the looks of things, Gus Baldwin is going to have a pretty busy year; he’s already released one album with The Sketch (which we raved about), but now we’re hearing that there’s a pocket full of solo releases lined up. Our first listen is a bit of back and forth banter between what one can assume is an AI robo-date and another character of Baldwin’s design. There’s this plodding back and forth for a moment, then the track opens up into this more garage-psych realm, using stair-stepping guitars and blasts of fuzz to guide us on this journey into the hedonistic realm of skronking horns and swirling madness. One of my favorite Austin acts, you dig?

Dag Och Natt Share Falling the Same Way

We were super excited to bring you a Dag Och Natt track just a few weeks ago, and I think they’ve only stepped up their game, so to speak, in regards to this new single. There’s something brooding in the mood itself, perhaps with that guttural bass line operating throughout. But, when it comes to the vocals and the guitars, they seem to embrace the meaning in the song’s title; I keep feeling myself sort of spinning and swirling through some atmospheric space, suspended. The further along the tune moves, the more they build and layer texture, openly welcoming you into the darkened abyss of their brilliant brand of pop. Their LP, Years and Years will be released on August 15th via Labrador.

Fernando Motta Single (featuring Terraplana)

We covered Brazilian outfit Terrplana quite a bit earlier this year, especially as they built towards the release of their album, Natural. But, this week, I was guided to a track from another Brazilian, Fernando Motta; the artist crafted this beautiful new tune featuring Terraplana, illustrating his own brand of dream pop dwellings. You’ll hear that cavernous echo throughout, with plenty of little detailing moments in the distance, painting the track with discord and beauty simultaneously. This tune appears on Fernando’s newest release, Movimento Algum, which sees the artists branching back and forth between noisier elements of shoegaze and introspective tones of melodic pop.
