Fortitude Valley Drop Video (Right There With You)

I was completely hit in the face by this brand new Fortitude Valley track, and I’m assuming you’ll be right in the same place if you just turn the knob to the right a bit. The UK outfit have some similarities to acts like the Beths, though I really love how they’re not afraid to let the crash erupt in the background of the tune…especially when that cymbal bursts! Don’t get me wrong, the sweetness of the melody is spot on, especially when everything gets pulled away to have the vocals work atop a thundering drum roll. All of it is tethered to a thematic notion of how we’re all trying to maintain relationships, romantic and otherwise…then hitting with the challenges that arise in the fast-paced modern world. Look for their new LP, Part of the Problem, Baby, which drops via Specialist Subject on August 1st.

Golden Apples Announces Shooting Star

I love waking up to a bunch of really rad tunes, and today seems to be in our favor, as we now get this rad tune from Golden Apples, announcing the group’s new LP. The press release says their new album draws from a fusion between the sounds of Karen Dalton and Yo La Tengo, so obviously that’s going to scratch all the itches, musically. For me, the vocals really drew me in here, letting the sort of noise billow all around my ears whilst still keeping me focused; they’re kind of whispering, with some layers thrown atop one another while guitars buzz and explode in the background. It’s a balance between noise and joy, and I’m just going to sit here and put it on repeat for a few rounds. Shooting Star will drop via Lame-O on September 19th.

 

Superchunk Drop No Hope Single

Not sure if this was the planned single announcement Superchunk had in the cards, but it definitely feels like the title is an apt descriptor of where we’re dropping this week. “No Hope” rumbles in with angular cuts shredding atop a rumbling bit of drum work; a natural energy courses through you almost immediately, greeted by this faint “oohooh” that drives the sugary sweetness of the tune. Honestly, this might be one of their best tunes in sometime, incorporating all their best elements into a really tight package; the music and vocals have innate hooks; they vocals have a softness they don’t always carry; you get an anthemic chorus too! All signs point to a ripping new record when Merge drop Songs in the Key of Yikes in August.

Strawberry Whiplash Share Baby (You’re a Dancer)

While they are definitely not a dance outfit, the Scottish duo of Strawberry Whiplash have approximate a swinging dance ditty, albeit under the guise of jangling pop sounds. This song snaps you into attention with a little drum work opening up to a huge jangling guitar and wash of keys; it sets the song sailing allowing the build to create this wash of melody that they perfectly slide into with the vocals. You can grab an EP version with this single featuring a couple of bonus tracks, or you can patiently await People Like Us, their new album dropping later this summer…all of it courtesy of Matinee Recordings.

Snake Lips Drop East Coast

We get it. Mondays are a total drag. So you’ll need some fuel to get your day going now with some proper rock n’ roll from Maine’s Snake Lips. They’ve got this thundering groove that courses through their latest single, letting the bass build bobbing waves beneath the smashing of rolling drum hits. The whole time, the rhythm section is competing with the surf-y garage vibes of the guitar; it wriggles in and out with fury…perhaps a precursor to the growl of the vocals that opens up the edge in the track’s later moment. Look for the group to drop Cat Beach on July 25th via Repeating Cloud Records.

I felt like I had to make up for missing out on some key hits the prior week, so I doubled down and the team and I brought you 27 brand new tunes. BGray was in love with the new Nations of Language, who he also caught up at the Kilby Block Party. Me?? Well, I fell in love with the women in the music scene, even getting into some new voices like Star Moles who I hadn’t been acquainted with before new singles hit me. Old ATH faves the Mary Onettes returned with a new single, so that was nice to hear…plus a new Pot Pot record is on its way via Felte. Oh…and did anyone write a better song than the opener from the Jeanines on this playlist? Indulge my friends.

San Gabriel Shares Alone in My Room

Austin is going to miss the work of James Bookert, aka San Gabriel. He already built a name for himself with his former Whiskey Shivers project, and was poised to be the glue that brought the pop world together with the indie kids. Now, Austin is at a loss as Bookert has moved off to Oregon, but the world will still get to experience his extreme talents. The mood is set with a few heavy keyboard notes hitting, then the samples open up into this hypnotic ambiance, returning as the beat drops right into the mixture. Once James voice comes in, some of the ambiance fades a bit letting the hooks become the resonating factor as he coolly sings atop; it does, to a degree, feel like he’s crafting this song alone in his room. Really looking forward to his debut Nights and Weekends, dropping on August 15th via Share It Music.

Both RayRay and myself were out on the road with our families last week, so we weren’t able to make it out to catch Death from Above 1979 when they hit up Empire Control Room last Friday with Archer Oh. Luckily our friend and photographer Casey Chumbley was able to shoot some photos on our behalf. Dragnet Share Red Square

With a little bit of a sleepy start to the morning, I felt like we should ramp it up a little bit, thus here we are with a fresh tune from Melbourne’s Dragnet. They waste no time wiggling in with jagged punk stabs cutting right through the speakers, little key notes adding in some flare throughout for just the faintest sprinkle of hooks. There’s an undeniable tenacity in what they’re creating, and when the line of “I see red, red, red” reminds me of the Hives in its bravado and simultaneous bite. Spoilsport Records will drop Dragnet Reigns on August 15th, so be ready for your ears to bleed.

Hadnot Creek Release Leaving

Robert Sawrey’s songwriting project Hadnot Creek caught our ear last year when Birds was released in late Summer. Less than a year later, and there’s another installment titled Leaving, which we’d like to point you towards this Friday morning. You’ll get a little bit of traditional alt-country sounds on the LP, though if you listen to the opener below you’ll hear a bit of an edge coming through. Songs like “Witness” give you a slightly different take, diving more into a kind of renegade country edge that would make someone such as Kris Kristoferson proud. It’s a little country, rock n’ roll splashed all over, giving you enough variance to make the whole of the listen exciting.
