Devendra Banhart Announces Ma

It’s been a few years since we’ve heard anything new from Devendra Barnhart, though he’s worked on a few compilations in his downtime. But, for me, while folks have their Obersts and their Whites, I’ve always been a Devendra guy; I also feel like he got sort of wrongfully placed in that whole freak-folk category…but, whatever. So, below is this wonderful new single; it’s got some nice little horn accompaniment, giving the song sort of a folk meets swamp boogie vibe; I suggest you wait until after the 3 minute mark for a real nice vocal touch from Banhart. His new album, Ma, will be out on September 13th, with a slew of tour dates slated for the fall, including a (possibly too expensive) show in Austin at Stubbs.

Molly Burch Shares Only One

I don’t think I can get enough music from Molly Burch, so it’s a good thing that the Austin songwriter has quickly followed up First Flower with a new 7″. Our first listen to the album’s A-side has me salivating for that flip side; I’m always sitting here marveling at her range as I listen to her sing. She operates with, as she describes it, ‘drama,’ but in that, she moves back and forth between smoky lounge crooner and jazz belter. Musically, the mixing on Molly’s record is always superb, with strings and guitar applying the perfect accent to her performance, yet never really over-stepping their role in the song. Finally an artist I can get my parents into! Her new Ballads 7″ is out on August 2nd via Captured Tracks. There’s also a huge tour throughout August, culminating in an Austin show at Barracuda.

Chuck Cleaver Shares Terrible Friend

Former Ass Ponys frontman Chuck Cleaver is prepping for the release of his new solo effort Send Aid, and with that, he’s got a new single to share out there. To me, this is like a barroom stomper; it’s got these two feuding guitar lines, one strumming while the other feeds noise to the listener’s ear. Chuck’s voice matches that juxtaposed vibe, forceful at times, while stretching to reach the more melodic tones throughout the verses; I like that after all this time he still has this fragility in his voice, the little sort of imperfections that turn listeners to fanatics. Send Aid will be out on July 19th via Shake It Records, with a tour up in the North East to follow.

More New Stuff from Swim Team

Every one should be listening to Swim Team, especially as the group have a new LP on the way in less than a month. We’ve previously covered “Are You Into Me,” but now the band have leaked two new tracks from their forthcoming Home Time. The first of these, “Everyday Things” has this bubbling post-punk-ishness, though it’s spun around the band’s slight connections to indiepop…you know, harmonies and pop sensibility. “New Year” is a little bit different, offering up an almost dreamy beach vibe to it; there exists this softness that sucks you under like strong tides in the ocean…though there’s some twinkling guitar lines too that definitely rule. I’m pretty stoked on this band at the moment; you should be too; they drop Home Time July 12th via Hysterical Records.

Emma Russack Returns with Be Real

I love starting off Mondays with tunes you that really get you excited to jump into the week, which is almost always the case when I get new Emma Russack tunes. There are two really incredible things that I love about this track; I love the storytelling aspect of Emma’s lyrics and I love the way the song seemingly builds with little to no release. Her first-person approach has this matter-of-fact manner that really drives home the story. Musically, each little bit seems to continuously rise in volume…first its guitar and voice, then emphatic drums, slowly, slowly building. It’d be easy to unleash anywhere in that process, but she holds back, almost toying with the listener, inevitably sucking you into the track. Winter Blues will be released on July 5th by Osborne Again!

Duncan Fellows Shares Cursive Tattoo

Duncan Fellows is among a handful of young acts in Austin working really hard to make a big name for themselves; I think “Cursive Tattoo” has them on the right road to breaking out big. The verses have this energetic forcefulness, akin to a lot of the pop punk that blends in with indie rock. But, the chorus is where they flip it on you, almost turning into this California croon style, bringing out this sunny vibe that rises up, spins you around then drops you right back into the band’s crunchy rock element. Fun tune for a Friday afternoon.

Guidon Bear Share Magellanic Cloud

Guidon Bear is an a fairly recent project, but lets just say it’s members come with quite a resume of their own, the Olympia, Washington sort. Next week they’ll be releasing their debut LP, and this single offers us a glimpse at what is to come our way. My favorite piece about this track is that they employ the same style as many an act known for building discord, but slow it down and put it beneath some bouncing synth work, allowing for the creation of an almost-pop smash hit. Mary Water’s voice sparkles throughout; she definitely has this style that’s ever-present but slightly nostalgic; it’s really clean throughout the verses, which I dig. Downwardly Mobile: Steel Accelerator is out June 19th via Antiquated Future and Yoyo Recordings.

New Music from Julia Rakel

You know I love Julia Rakel; I was really pushing her indie fEElz EP earlier this year. She returns today with this brand new single, a sort of hazy ode to summer time. Her production is always spot on, and the little musical accents here really help create that sort of sunny blur that only means you’re getting closer to that oasis; it’s a nice touch in the song’s latter half when she ties in a vocal counterpoint to add layered depth. It’s been a great year for Julia, and it looks like she’s going to continue that momentum going forward, so Happy Friday for that one.

Thursday Night ATX Shows

It’s just one of those nights where you could practically walk downtown, fall over and land at a really incredible show. I’ve got my own eyes set on bouncing around to a few, but let’s see if we can’t point you in the proper direction…I gave you some hints, but you can also catch Hootie and the Blowfish if that’s your prerogative.
