Listen to Little Oil

I think one of my first musical loves as a late teen was falling in love with sort of weirdo-folk; I blame whoever gave me those early Elf Power CDs. Here we have a new act by the name of Little Oil; there’s definitely a group that are really going to appreciate this stuff. At times, it reminds me a bit of Coma Cinema, especially in some of the verses. But, and as much as I love CC, this has a little bit more musicianship to it in the long run, from the way the notes are strummed to the recording of the vocals; it’s this quietly unassuming gem that I can’t get outta my head at the moment.

Cigarette Share Video fro Drips

Next week, Cigarette will release their new album Light Blues, a record filled with these ornate pop touches that walk the fine line between slow-core and bedroom pop; I think in a lot of ways it’s really similar to the Clientele, but stripped bare of the various psych flourishes. The brilliance of this video, for me, is that the tune and video are so closely tied to one another; the filming seems to move in step with the ringing of vocal notes and guitar chords. Then, just as I think I’ve done a great job pigeonholing the sound, I notice this note or that, drifting away, like Sandra Bullock in Gravity; I guess it’s me who’s floating. Beautiful sound to get you through Monday…Light Blues is out next week.

New Music from Abram Shook

As you know, we’re big Abram Shook fans; he even let us put out an LP by his Feverbones project, so when he’s crafting new tunes, our heads turn right away. I think those longtime fans will immediately notice that this record is a bit of a new twist for Abram; it sounds and looks like a pop record, albeit one spun through the lens of Shook. His soft vocal delivery seems to highlight the song’s natural rhythm, while synth stabs build in a toe-tapping groove beneath the whole mix; it’s all crafted under Abram’s typical attention to detail, with every note throughout being purposeful. The Neon Machine will be available on August 16th via Western Vinyl.

Waves of Dread Share the Make Believe

Up until now, our experience with Waves of Dread have been all positive; they move back and forth between these billowing noise pop numbers and then the softer, seductive side of dreamy pop music…it looks like we get the latter with their new single “The Make-Believe.” It opens by leading us on a sort euphoric jaunt via soft chanting, all right before the guitar come in and cut it in to give a little shimmy and shake to the track; I think the vocals perfectly fall in line, shrouded just a little bit, though still carrying that swagger. In the latter half you have the group toying with the noisier side of their sound, though this track is surely a pop number. Give a listen.

Dumb Share Video for CBC Radio 3

You haven’t heard me rave about Dumb? Well, then clearly you haven’t been following this site as of late because I’ve been pretty excited about their forthcoming LP, Club Nites. This tune gives you a little something different, and perhaps in the whole of the record, a little respite. Typically the band are offering frantic, angular chords; there’s a natural pacing that seems to race through your speakers; here, however, they’re pulling back, ever so slightly, showing patience that really allows for the innate hooks to shine through. It’s refreshing to hear them stay in their line while offering you an alternative glimpse at their sound. The album drops next week via Mint Records!

Boyracer Shares Bored and Lonely

Boyracer has been writing great fuzzy pop-punk since the early early 90s, and pretty much everyone you love and adore has probably played in the band a time or two, but now, Stewart Anderson has solidified a new line-up and new tunes. Below we have the short poppy spurt of “Bored and Lonely,” a song seemingly built upon the backbone of our society where we all feel isolated behind our screens, though we’re all likely doing the exact same thing…or at least that’s how I see it. This song will appear on a quick little three song single, but more importantly, it will also be included on a forthcoming album which we hope to hear more from in the very near future.

Sungaze Share New Familiar Video

You ever hear a song and immediately you swoon, wondering where they’ve been all your life? Okay, so perhaps that’s a touch too hyperbolic, but I felt right at home the moment I pressed play on this new video from Cincinnati’s Sungaze. While there’s this natural softness to it, almost as if it’s lulling you to sleep, a beautiful emotion sort of pervades the entirety of the tune, aided by the way the video was shot; it’s that ringing guitar line lurking beneath the haze that really drives it home for me. The band will release their debut LP, Light in All of It on July 19th…and include some Texas dates, including one here in Austin with our friends She Sir on 6/16 (who also recently released a new EP–shameless plug).

More New Seablite

Grass Stains and Novocaine is high upon my listening rotation these last few weeks, and as the band keep dropping singles, I’m going to keep encouraging you to visit listen. Their latest single is this fuzzy pop number where the guitar just grinds out like a buzzsaw. Sounds frightening, but the rhythm section keeps a natural melody to the tune, allowing for the vocals to ride on the back of of it all like a nice little pop breeze blowing through your bedroom window. It’s short and sweet and begging for you to press repeat, so go ahead now, listen again and again. Seablite will drop the LP on June 7th via Emotional Response Records.

Go Listen to Tennis Club

Man, Tennis Club just quietly dropped this amazing indiepop record on us, and I hope you’ll spend a little time on Friday listening to Pink in its entirety. Throughout the album the group get playful with some of the best bits of the genre; they bring in surfy touches, throw in melody on top of “oohs”, they’ll get fuzzy when needed…and even a touch of Spanish in there. I think at the moment I’ve been jamming “London” the most of this batch, but I’ll warn you that there’s not a bad tune in this batch. You can stream below or grab the new LP from Elefant Records.

Brand New Tony Molina!

I owe Matt at Forged Artifacts a huge thanks for pointing me in the right direction, namely towards these glorious 2 minutes of new Tony Molina. I loved Kill the Lights, and pretty much raved about it anywhere I could, and now there’s a new 7″ on its way. The first of the tunes seems to pick up where that record left off, crafting this generous pop vibe, then moving into a nice heavy riff that closes the song out. On the latter tune, it’s a blaster, kicking off the pop hooks in a fuzzy manner before just calling it quits right before the 1 minute mark. This is pure Tony Molina at his best, and deserves your attention immediately; it’s out on a new LP titled Songs From San Mateo County via Smoking Room on July 19th.
