I felt like I didn’t manage to crush it as much as I prefer, but in that, we still managed to get at least 20 rad tunes for you to digest, all of which you can hear in the spot below. RayRay got up the latest from Hotline TNT, and we hung with the masses in there, dropping jams from Winter, TAGABOW and the likes…but don’t you worry, we still dug into a little bit of the obscure. I was super stoked to hear that Wombo has a new LP for Fire Talk, and even more so to dig into a little more of the dub vibes from Pachyman. Plus, we premiered the “Clown Car” video from Lung, which you can read about HERE. If that’s not your jam, I’m sure you’ll find plenty to adore below.

I admittedly haven’t been able to find the words that fit into summarizing the great work of Chapter Music over the years, particularly their important role in our lives here at ATH; we’ll be sad to miss their curation and discovery as they shift focus to their back catalogue and reissues. But, we can throw our support behind label head/founder Guy Blackman, as his solo effort will be one of the last releases of new music from the legends! This week Guy made available two new singles from his Out of Sight LP, one which features Julien Gasc of Stereolab.”Let Me Let You Down,” which features Julien is more of a bare-bones of bedroom pop, working on really light electronics and a guitar that opens the tune unto the world. The second of the tunes is this playful little ditty with a nice hopping pop element, some hand-clapping moments for audience participation. Both tunes will be on Out of Sight, which drops on June 13th.

Lowmoon Remixes Lone Striker Single

Earlier this Spring, Lone Striker released their self-titled LP, and it was full of instant pop classics, built upon the songwriting genius of Tom Brown (Rural France/Teenage Tom Petties). It was a record that felt akin to the genius of Jason Lytle, and now, it’s caught the ear of one of the Safe Suburban Home labelmates, Lowmoon. The song’s original opens with this budding vocal that quickly churns into a delightful blast of indie bedroom pop; you can hear the original HERE. Lowmoon have taken it’s guitar origins and twisted them into a more electronic element, creating a cavernous ambiance behind Brown’s vocals, accompanied by a sampled beat that gets to accent the guitar elements when they come into play. Maybe the song makes you fall in love with Lowmoon, or go back and revisit the whole of Lone Striker…either way, you can find it all on Safe Suburban Home.

Pleased to Meet You: Twirlies

There’s a lot of great pop music coming out of Norway this year (High Water Marks!), but I hadn’t heard of Twirlies before, but am glad to have stumbled upon their sound this Friday morning. While they call Norway home, you can certainly seem them fitting into a number of various pop scenes around the indie sphere, mostly Glasgow and Athens (Georgia). They employ this marvelous sense of melody, almost pulling at nostalgia as they try to bring it into the present with overlapping vocal harmonies and clarity in production. A new group dropping some bright pop music? Thanks Cafe Superstar for sending this our way!

Fetching Pails Share Ruiner Video

I felt like the best way to begin the coverage of today was to take off with a patient tune, as I’ll need that wrapping up the end of the school year over here. In that, the latest track from Nashville’s Fetching Pails works perfectly, as it almost drifts upon a synthetic note and accompanying vocals for nearly a minute. Admittedly, it’s a bit of a slow crawl, but the reward comes when the drums begin to snap into the picture accompanying Jill Townsend’s voice, leading the listener on this ethereal adventure, fluttering up and down with her vocals while careful beats bubble and fade beneath the surface. And, the final explosion near the tune’s end will be your treat for your patience. This tune comes courtesy of yk Records.

Premiere: Lung – Clown Car Video

Here we are again with another rad tune from the confines of Cincinnati, forever reminding us that labels like Feel It Records are the backbone of the current scene; this time they’re letting us share a great new tune from the duo, Lung. The entirety of the new record began with roots in the tune below, giving birth to this mystical character named the Swankeeper, and while the mythology behind the character grew up here, I’d love it if we merely focused on the musical side for a minute. Sharp drum hits from Daisy Caplan burst into the tune within seconds, letting Kate Wakefield start to deliver her vocal work. Not a moment later, you’re greeted with this cacophony of discord, billowing with anxiety and putting you on edge; I still marvel that this much danger and noise comes from Wakefield’s manipulation of the cello. In a sense, it reminds me of Sleigh Bells, building minimalist hooks in this artistically refreshing way; you’ll want to be sure you order a copy by the time the Swankeeper hits on May 30th.

Deary Share I Still Think About You Video

There’s a new little 7″ coming your way from UK outfit Deary, and they’ve completely indulged in the dreamy status for their latest number. This one feels like you’re standing on the shore of any number of beaches across the globe, the water continuously nibbling at your toes, with cascading guitars serving as echoes of other beach-goers. Or maybe you flip it over and the track takes you into outer space, as it clearly operates in this world where floating seems entirely possible, and entirely enjoyable, just sort of drifting in this purgatory above the rest of the world. The new 7″ comes out June 27th via Sonic Cathedral.

Tape Trash Drop New Single – We Will Collide

There is a deserved amount of buzz and expectations blowing overseas from Norwegian outfit Tape Trash, who return today with a brand new track from their forthcoming LP. Listening through this latest tune, you can hear why folks are excited; they sound like some of the early Pains of Being Pure at Heart records, which also has links to fuzz pop and dreamy hits from the 80s/90s. But, on their end, they seem to fully embrace the pop side of things, letting that sort of burst through the noisier underbelly of the single, erupting in the chorus with this maximized melody that sprinkles you with cool. So you get noise and cooled warmth, all of which we expect to find on their debut LP for Tiny Engines, slated for a Fall release.

SAVAK Release American Vernacular

While the earlier tunes from Savak have embraced a matured indie rock ethos, they branch out into the farther reaches of the genre with their latest single. From its start, the track almost feels more atmospheric than anything, taking these spaced out sounds to sort of wash over the room before the thundering gallop of the drums sneaks into the picture. Here you get to hear the guitars spring to life, winding their way through the maze of ambient echoes, creating a path that the vocals can follow as they, too, sneak in slowly; they’re more spoken than sung, letting the brimming of the burn spring to life a little. If you dig, keep your eyes out for Squawk, which drops next week via Ernest Jenning/Peculiar Works!

Lulu Drop Tous les Etes

While I admittedly find myself limited in my understanding of French, I do find that my love of good old fashioned rock n’ roll is still going strong, thus why I chose to crank this Lulu track in your ears. It’s got that satisfying staggered riff that has your feet tapping and your body bouncing up and down, ready to rock without a care in the world. They drive the pace right at you, letting you free when they drop into the group chorus, maximizing the joy and punch you’d get from a classic power-pop chorus. And, just as you think the track’s over, stay tuned for a sneaky bit of pop fun at the back side! Look for their self-titled album via Howlin Banana on June 6th.
