I can’t help but to keep playing this Jonathan Franco track over and over; it’s like some seductress, drawing me in when I least expect it. Franco has a slew of references I can get behind, like Bedhead and Silver Jews…and I’m probably way far off here, but I also here a little bit of early Grandaddy in the song’s construction. Jonathan is soft-spoken, at least in this mix, and he’s crafted this magnificent wall of noise that swirls around and around, entrancing you as you listen. I promise you that you’ll come back to this number again and again, finding new secrets with each listen. You’ll find this tune on Swimming Alone Around the Room, which drops November 9th.

Pleased To Meet You: Lights on Moscow

I’ve probably spent a decent amount of time with the music of the two musicians who make up Lights on Moscow (Justin of Editors, Hazel of Lanterns on the Lake), but I didn’t expect them to give birth to this striking sound. The duo spend a good minute just building the tension with ambient noises encircling. Drums begin to emerge, covered by this heavy riff that begins as an added musical layer, before, itself, adding further textures to its own sound. Hazel’s voice sits perfectly amidst the entirety of the tune, sort of wavering between angelic and wispy, riding the natural ebbs and flows of the tune. Together they’ll release their debut EP on October 19th.

Loving This New J Fernandez

The end of the year is rapidly approaching, which means we’ve got to get our year-end list started! But, before we go that route, there’s still a few solid releases hanging on in 2018, like this forthcoming LP from J Fernandez. It has this timeless blend of classic pop arrangements, and structures, with some psychedelic guitar touches bringing the kids back to the table. There are some electronic elements that create the perfect cocoon to wrap around J’s melodies, and in such a way that there’s just a hint of oddity, so you’re guaranteed to steer clear of run of the mill. Occasional Din will be out on November 9th via Joyful Noise.

Chilled Pop from Way Dynamic

I love the simplicity of Melbourne’s Way Dynamic, especially on the latest single. It’s a pretty easy formula in my eyes, offering up light guitar strumming, minimal percussion and some warbling electronics for spiritual support. Of course, if the vocals weren’t so musically attractive it could all fall to pieces, though luckily that’s not the case, with the perfect care given to the melodies. It’s the best way to start out your Monday, drifting into this wintry mix outside my window. The band have a new EP titled What’s It All For Now, which will be released on November 16th via Our Golden Friend.

Another Track from Papercuts

We’re just about a week away from the release of the new Papercuts album, and the band just released one of my favorite tracks from the LP. I love the underlying energy from the rhythm section, which works in contrast to the smoky haze of Jason Quever’s voice; the guitar’s, too, carry on an energetic tone. It’s the perfect juxtaposition, allowing the listener to get carried away by the uplifting spirit, whilst still delving into moments of reflection. If you’re willing to let music carry you away again, perhaps you’ll pick up Parallel Universe Blues on October 17th via Slumberland.

Listen to More Single Lash

There are several really great albums that came out of Austin this year, but one rising near the top (in my eyes) is this new Single Lash. The band just dropped another tune, and it’s one of the more remarkable numbers we’ve heard from the group. Opening with a distorted guitar coming in bursts, stripped away to reveal Nic’s voice, then back in again. The wall of hazy distortion eventually becomes omnipresent, serving as the white noise on which Nadeau paints his voice. There’s a subtlety to the chorus in this number too, an effortless venture floating and disappearing beneath the atmosphere of the track. Then the band sticks around to texture the back half of the track with haunting musicianship.Providence comes out on October 26th via Holodeck.

Did You Hear the New Comet Gain Single

I’m late to the game on this one, though I’ve known about (and ordered!) this new Comet Gain single for some time, but I’d be remiss if I didn’t encourage you to take a stroll down the road with David Feck and friends. There’s something playful and heartfelt in Feck’s songs, and yet something one could attach to a sort of everyman type; he makes you feel like a friend sharing a story. I love the way he sort of speeds up his lyrics in certain incidents, like he’s racing to get to the point, then drops back to a more casual vibe. I could, and probably more often than not, listen to this band every day. If you’re so inclined, grab the new 7″ from Tapete Records…an LP is to follow next year.

Light Pop from Far Caspian

I’m a sucker for little guitar notes that add some pep to my step…and the lads in Far Caspian are doing just that. They offer a brand of guitar pop, bordering on moving into the dream pop region with the effects that shine in the mix. But, it’s not all about the beat here, as the group have a really strong vocal presence. It’s gentle, and emphatic where needed, but never really reaching for the top…I like a voice that knows when you can just sit down and chill in the middle of the goings-on. Go ahead, enjoy yourself.

New Glands Music Coming Soon

A friend from Arkansas hipped me to the Glands back in 2001, and I’m pretty sure any romantic interest for the next few years found “Swim” on a mix of some sort…pretty sure I included it on a mix I gave to my wife. I’ve referenced the band countless times over the 11 years we’ve run this site, and had always thought them to be fairly unknown in larger circles…until yesterday. NPR, P4K and Stereogum both reported that New West would be releasing new music from the band, with the line-up crafting songs around demos left behind by Ross Shapiro after his passing. I guess its bittersweet, as I’m grateful for new music…though its a reminder of the fragility of your heroes. For me, the self-titled LP will always be one of my absolute favorites; it’s a near perfect album in my ears. If, like me, you’ve quietly fawned over the band for decades, you’ll want to get this new Box Set from New West.

 

Brand New Fanclub Music

If you’re not into Fanclub yet, well, let me advise you. You’re going to want to be into Fanclub. The fairly new trio has just recently been popping up in the ATX scene with some lineage to our faves Letting Up Despite Great Faults. The band offers a similar note, though Leslie’s voice gives the band a slightly dreamier quality, driving home the infectiousness of their work. It’s pick up your feet and dance around the room indiepop, and there’s no ifs ands or buts, you SHOULD be listening to Fanclub. No word on official releases as of yet, but rest assured, we’re super excited to hear new tunes!
