Enjoying This New Matthew Dear Tune

I’ve always had a soft spot for the work of Matthew Dear, but we haven’t really heard much from him since 2012, so with a new album on the horizon, I figure we should give it some attention. It’s a common electronic sound, with understated pulses subsiding so that vocals can ride over the groundwork. Oh, and speaking of the vocals, this track features Tegan and Sara throwing down some lines, which should draw some raves (myself included). All those voices combine in the end, as a dancer beat comes in to bring about a spirited exuberance. His music is always thoughtful and simultaneously playful, and I can always back that. Bunny comes out on October 12th via Ghostly.

Missing Pages Announce New 7″

We’ve been following Stephen Svacina on these pages for some time, be it with Jonly Bonly or Sweet Talk…and now we turn our attention to his latest project Missing Pages. The band are working on their debut LP at the moment, but while we wait, they’re going to tease us with a new 7″ for 12XU. The A-side has this driving guitar line, with Stephen and Garrick working against each other with these sharp chords circling one another like wrestlers about to lock up in the center of the ring. They continue to build up by pulling in additional vocals from bassists Ali, all culminating in my favorite part…the chorus of “it’s a long way down” is the perfect pop moment. Another Day Another Scarves Tune

I feel like the best way to start out my week is to have the latest single from Scarves turned up really loud. For me, the guitar work is one of the main winners here; it has these little notes that turn over and over in math-y rock fashion; it matches Niko’s voice with this frantic pace that builds this natural tension within the song’s confines. There’s so much space working behind the vocals too, adding to that build-up…and its important to note the group never fully give in to that trap. The band will release Dinner Dates for the End of Days on September 28th, with a scheduled Austin date on October 1st at Cheer Ups.

Single Lash Drop Another Single

I’m really hoping that Single Lash takes off with this new album, as I’ve fancied Austin act’s aesthetic for some time. I love the balance exhibited in the latest single, working carefully between delicate moments of brooding pop and noisier sonic exploration (akin to the gaze). Nic’s voice is perfectly placed here, fragile and deep in tone; it has this billowing effect that’s matched by the group’s efforts…and it all works even more perfectly with the shadowy video elements. Providence, the group’s new album, will be out on October 26th via Holodeck Records.

Songs for Walter Prep An Endless Summer Daze

I’ve been writing about Songs for Walter for quite some time; the music always offers me some sort of solace when I’m seeking something intimate and personal. I feel like every single they release is mine, and mine alone. Except now there’s a full length on the near horizon, and I’d be remiss if I didn’t guide you in that direction. This track sort of reminds me of the later period of Rogue Wave, wrapping vocal takes atop one another whilst the music seems crafted from the wilderness; it carries a sense of wonderment and exploration, ultimately leaving you longing for some great journey. An Endless Summer Daze will drop on September 28th, and I hope you’ll listen.

DOG Power Release Latest Single

While Flying Nun Records might be best known for fostering a certain guitar sound, the label has always been on the forefront of what goes down in New Zealand. The label’s latest signing, DOG Power indicates that they’re more than what’s in the storied history. For starters, there’s an inherent darkness to this song; it has something to do with the deep vocal tones, as well as the electronic accents and guitar rings. That being said, Sam Perry comes across like a fresh Dave Gahan, giving off this perfectly seductive croon that creeps through your speakers. The group will release their self-titled album on November 26th.

Peyote Coyote Continue Residency at Beerland Tonight

One time Florida, current Austin act Peyote Coyote have landed themselves quite the residency, with a month’s full of Thursday night shows over at Beerland. The band brandish a certain stylistic nod towards psychedelia, though I think the poppier folk influence in their songs is what has always had my interest. But, equally as important, are the band’s coming in to support the show, like tonight’s line-up has our perennial faves Being Dead (more news on them soon), as well as Shutterr and Grady P. Drugg…so you get the best of Austin for a cheap price. Doors are at 9, so get there early before it fills up.

Surf Rock Is Dead Ready Their Debut

Surf Rock is Dead have made appearance on our pages before, but what better reason to bring up the band than to share a new track from the band’s forthcoming LP. Like earlier tunes, the group has a knack for building in these hooks that wrap themselves around your ears again and again. At times, the track has this great bounce to it, like early stuff from the Drums, but other times, the duo (now three-o) just build in these pop rock anthemic moments that dwell in the region of new dream pop stylings, accented by sharp guitar notes. No release date as of yet, but we’ll keep you posted, as I’m sure we’ll be talking about these guys quite a bit.

The Treasures of Mexico Are Back

After wandering for separately for a few years, Mark and Bob of The Dentists fame joined together once more to form The Treasures of Mexico, releasing their debut Holding Pattern in 2015. Since then, we’ve been teased with the insatiable “Super Cute,” but now we have a new single…and an album announcement! Everything Sparks Joy will be released on October 5th via Shelflife, and you can have another track to whet your appetite below. Almost immediately, the song has a natural bounce; the drums seem to hop through the speakers, grabbing you in your arms and hopping up and down. Once the vocals enter calmly, things seemingly settle, though the cascading chorus guitar definitely drives home a heavier punch. As the song bounds, you’d be quite pleased to just appreciate the offering, but the band have other ideas, as they add a nice female accompanying vocal just before the 3 minute mark to build in an added sense of charm. Linen Closet Drop New Single

I always like the collective vibe; a bunch of different minds working to flesh out something unique together. This seems to be the story of Adam Hilton, who has rounded out his lineup, both live and in the studio, with some of our favorite musicians to bring his Linen Closet to life. Yesterday, the band dropped the lead single, and it’s quite remarkable, if you ask me. Hilton has these fragile vocals that sound a bit like early Wolf Parade, almost as if they could break apart at the fall of each syllable. The precision drumming helps keep the pace, allowing for some meandering through experimentalism by the rest of the band. I love the artful ring throughout the track, reminiscent of some Dirty Projectors vibes. All things point towards a collective piece of brilliant indie rock, but you’ll have to wait until October 19th to hear the band’s self-titled album for yourself.
