Goodbye to Growl

Back in 2017 we were lucky to release Won’t You, the debut full-length from Austin’s Growl. I’d been following the band for quite some time, so I considered it a monumental achievement in its own right; I couldn’t be more proud of that record. But, there comes a time when you let go of the things you love…and as such, we big a fond farewell to Growl, who are currently calling it a day due to life changes amongst the band. Kent, Austin’s best drummer, is off to grad-school…Jon is headed to Seattle then to Sweden for the time being. In honor of their happy closing, we’re pleased to share the following video. It was shot by Ryan Sax while the band was touring throughout the States; you can hear a beautiful acoustic version of “Passerby” and a live version of “Duck Sauce” from their LP (you can buy it HERE); it does a really great job of capturing the spirit of the group, one of the many reasons we were fortunate to work with them. We wish both Kent and Jon the best as they depart; Austin will have a huge hole where the boys in Growl have gone on to adventures unknown.

Generifus Returns with New EP

Generifus just dropped Free Ways back in March, and Spencer Sult is ready to return with a new EP under his belt. He returns with this slinky ballad, strolling through your speakers without a care in the world. There’s a strong backbone of keys and electronics, which allows Sult the room to let his voice do the work to draw in the listener; he’s accompanied just beneath the mix by Anna Jeter of Ancient Pools. The middling track solo is a nice little touch to add some flesh to the tune…not that that’s needed. Suit reminds me of a slightly happier Greg Ashley, which is a high compliment on my end. Look for And of an Era to drop this Friday.

Hear Another Spiritualized Single

There’s just something in the craft of J. Spaceman that makes me come back again and again, especially now that he’s really been focused on this swelling style of Western americana. On this round, we find him right at home, almost resting in the midst of some vast expanse of musical landscape. Because it’s Spiritualized, there are, of course, added textural elements from like horns and strings, not to mention this vibrating electronic note that runs through the background…and those backing vocals only sweeten the deal. And Nothing Hurt will drop on September 7th via Fat Possum.

Parrot Dream Drop Another Single

In just about a month, Parrot Dream will finally release their debut album, Light Goes, and they’re slowly letting singles trickle into the world. On the latest single, they open the song with an almost post-rock aesthetic, focusing on the crisp guitar sounds that spin around in step with the rhythm section. It’s not until the first minute has finished that you get to meet the band’s dream pop persona, introducing a wash of keyboards and warm vocals that ride the natural melody to the song’s end. It’s another nice entry into the band’s catalog, so if you’re interested, be sure to grab it from Good Eye Records on August 24th.

Slumberland Announces Peel Dream Magazine

Slumberland Records has been on a roll this year, having released the latest from Smokescreens and the album of the year candidate from Tony Molina…now they’ve got Peel Dream Magazine. The band is the project of NYC-based Joe Stevens; he’s constructing this dense pop world not currently available amongst the indie scene. Immediately there’s forward movement, the song pushes as a lightly distorted guitar chug cuts through a softer percussive realm. The chorus is more of a twinkling pulse to let everyone grab their breath; this is surely where a Stereolab reference is apt. The band will release Modern Meta Physic on October 4th.

David Israel Album Release Party @ Electric Church on Sunday Night

Sorry for the long-winded post title, but maybe that’s all your looking for! But, important information is at hand, as I’m hoping to direct you to the Electric Church on Sunday to celebrate the release of David Israel‘s The Year That Felt Like Two; we dropped it two weeks ago on ATH Records. For starters, the record is amazing, as is the artwork, so that should really be enough, if you’re an Austin music fan. But, a portion of proceeds will be donated by David and ATH directly to RAICES. Along with David and his band, you’ll also get to see El Lago, who I raved about previously, as well as Minimal Animal and TC Superstar. Stream the latest video from the album below; it ran over on RSTB earlier this week.

Sea Pinks Prep New Album

Sea Pinks have always had a special place in my heart, and a reserved spot in my listening rotations…that’s not likely to change with a new album on the horizon. Our first listen is this new single below, and it feels like a matured piece of pop, which makes senses as this is the group’s 7th album. The guitar work jangles and twinkles in the front half of the track, allowing the vocals to sit back with indifference and casualness. The edgy middling section and closing discord gives the song an added kick, breaking up the tune just enough to keep the whole thing interesting. Rockpool Blue is the title of the new LP, and it drops on September 28th.

Brand New Day Wave

We haven’t heard from Day Wave since The Days We Had…though we did catch the band’s set at ACL last fall. Now, we’re getting a glimpse of where Jackson Phillips has been with a new single popping up today. It’s a bright pop song number, with just a hint of atmospherics textured into his vocals, giving off that popular dream quality. While the song’s front half is filled with energy and hooks, it’s the back side that has my interest, with a thoughtful fade out that wraps you up in warmth before the song disappears. No word on a release, but the way Phillips works, I expect an EP any day now!

Fortuna Pop! All Stars Cover the Comet Gain

I’ve never hidden my adoration for legendary act Comet Gain, but today I was given a gift of that I wasn’t expecting; Fortuna Pop gathered all their friends to record a cover of “You can Hide Your Love Forever.” The song fulfills the labels last of their subscription series, so this might be your only way to enjoy the song; you can find the original on Comet Gain’s album Broken Record Prayers. There’s too many names to mention them all, but members of notable bands like Allo Darlin, The Loves, Hefner, Spook School, Martha, Flowers…and Emma Kupa who gets bass credit (though no vocal credit?!)…all play a part. A delightful tune, in both original and cover. I have a feeling that in about a decade, folks will look back on Fortuna Pop as the Sarah Records of its day…bummer its hard to get all those albums in the US. Anyways. Enjoy pop.

A New Track from Tim Cohen

Tim Cohen seems to have slowed down a bit the last few years, but there’s never a day when I wouldn’t listen to something he’s crafted. He’s just announced a new record, and shared the single that’s below. There’s a soulful brood in the verses, something he’s grown into over the last few solo releases. You’ll find the chorus a bit playful, and perhaps that’s by design, giving a slight nod to pop structures…and it all sets up the closing “whose.” His new LP is titled The Modern World, and it drops on September 28th via Sinderlyn.
