Static Diary Release Video for Phrase from Business

We’ve previously written about Scott Danbom‘s new project, Static Diary, and today we’re happy to share the animated video for album track “Phrase from Business.” It’s a delicate number from the get-go, with a bare piano accompanying Scott’s voice; that piano eventually leans into a heavier electronic pulse. Danborn’s voice has this certain fragility to it that’s intoxicating; it hits it’s peak as the song swell’s around the chorus. About two minutes in, the song surges into a heavy handed jam of sorts, fuzzy and ominous ’til the fadeout. It’s a gorgeous number, and you’ll find it on the Static Diary LP, which drops Friday.

New Music from Molly Burch

It’s never a bad day for a Molly Burch tune, especially as she’s just announced her second LP is coming our way in October. This new track opens up with this sparse bit of instrumentation, allowing light guitars to twinkle amidst the percussion. Once the song moves along, Burch’s vocals take on the sublime and the guitar is ever-present; I like the tones operating here, particularly the cosmic leaning guitar chords. Her new album is titled First Flower, and it’s slated for an October 5th release via Captured Tracks…not to mention a huge tour including a post at ACL Festival.

New Music from The Holydrug Couple

It’s becoming increasingly difficult to turn your head from The Holydrug Couple. Their last album, Mourn (2015), showed some steps in a more pop-centric direction…and it looks like Hyper Super Mega is going to take an even larger step forward. This single below is perhaps one of the band’s most accessible tunes; it offers a soul-inflected vocal crawl, while harkening to some of the pop-collage work the Flaming Lips did around the Yoshimi-era. It’s just weird enough to make turn those cool kids on, but it has this pop sensibility that supersedes any essence of cool. Look for the new LP to drop on September 14th via Sacred Bones Records.

Another Noisy Rocker from Exhalants

While my drive for heavier sound has dissipated, there’s something in the craft of Austin’s Exhalants that just begs me to listen…and I’ll oblige. On this single, the band have this crashing hardcore train wreck, something that has me practicing my windmill moves all over my living room as we speak. Vocals are distant, almost echoes from some far off land trying to cut through the noise. Then it’s all turned to an almost catchy driving riff, building the tension all over to unleash a ferocious howl of an ending. Their self-titled debut will be ready to break through your eardrums on August 24th, courtesy of Self Sabotage Records.

Smooth Pop Number from Eoin Dolan

You’ve got to slide nice and slow into a Wednesday, and I think this Eoin Dolan tack will do just the trick. It begins in a sort of spaced-out weirdness, though that all changes the instant Dolan sets his vocals into play. His deliver has slight hints of tropicalia mixed with a tinge of crooner; it sounds an awful lot like Dent May if he decided to get just a little weirder. The Irish songwriter has new music coming your way via 4 track EP that’s scheduled to drop on August 24th via Citog Records.

Brand New Track from Ladada

Ladada recently announced their long awaited debut album, Heaven on the Rocks, and today we’re happy to share the album’s second single with you. Immediately you’ll hear the band’s raucous throwback sound, made fresh with subtle hooks and bubbling movement from the rhythm section. What I like a great deal, and what gets the band lumped in with new-psych is there tempo switch, changing the direction of the song, albeit for a brief moment; it is light and sunny and sets up the band’s noisy shuffle to the song’s boisterous ending. You can preorder the new LP from Gold Robot Records; it drops in October!

Slept on This Salient Braves Tune

The latest track from The Salient Braves has been out for just 8 days, and I’m just now catching up! Luckily, great songs get to last in the world forever, and this is one of the band’s greatest songs. There’s so much to love, be it the gentle ringing of the guitars, the backing vocals that add depth or the occasional horn work. Of course, the British vocal affectation that always charms is ever present; it sounds in a strange way like The Wedding Present went for a straightforward pop record…and that’s okay in my book!

More New Still Corners

I know a lot of people are super in-love with that new Beach House LP, and that’s all well and good, but you’re going to want to hear the work Still Corners are putting out. Today they shared this lush new track from their forthcoming LP, Slow Air. As dreamy as the song seems, there’s still elements of quietloudquiet…opening the song with this dense dream world before a simple guitar chord rings to add more power, all before the waves flow back to the shores of softness. But, that doesn’t even include the thirty seconds or so around the 3 minute mark with those stabbing lines of brightness! The new LP drops on August 17th via Wrecking Light.

Check This Ead Wood Tune

Trying to find the bright side of a Monday? I’m thinking this new track from Ead Wood & the Heights might do just the trick. The Bristol band have this great guitar sound, almost twinkling through your speakers. There’s a real softness to the vocals of Ed, and I especially enjoy the little change in pitch right before the two minute mark signals a slow move towards the song’s close. It’s a great way to start off Monday, with similarities to acts like Real Estate, you’re sure to enjoy a good couple of spins on this tune. Stay tuned for more the Beige Dreams EP coming soon!

Tim Rutili of Califone Plays Beerland Saturday Night

Former Red Red Meat and current Califone songwriter Tim Rutili has been at it for forever. But, currently, he’s focused on his project with his Austin friend, Craig Ross; the two released Guitars Tuned to Air Conditioners back in 2016 and 10 Seconds to Collapse this last month. If you were to listen to the lead single, you’d probably recall Yankee Hotel Foxtrot era Wilco…when they were still dabbling with experimenting over folk structures. The duo will be playing Saturday night at Beerland, joined on stage by friends Lindsey Verrill and Thor Harris; Moist Flesh and Knife in the Water will also be playing.
